My uncle was a first overall talent throwing 98 as a 16 year old. Broke his back playing basketball ball. But either way. He told me on release pull the light switch. Basically point your fingers straight in the dirt after it leaves ya hand. And my slider was nasty. But now I'm coaching seeing other guides to improve my youths
I’ve always had this pitch as a number 5, one that I threw not too often. But recently I’ve thrown it more and found that it really does get people swinging and missing.
Listen here if you are someone that is going to try this out! In just 5 minutes of me trying this pitch, I was able to throw some insane sliders. Here are some things I noticed about it as I learned it. First, if you want that perfect diagonal slide on the pitch, then focus more on the front/top spin (this might only be me though). When I put more effort into getting the top spin and the side spin, I threw more of a straight cutter. So you can change up things and modify it to how you like it. You can take almost a slurve approach to the pitch, or get a cutter out of it. This was a great video and i'm going to need to get this slider into my games as soon as possible.
Great explanation! I would love it if you could talk about the difference between a slider and a curveball. My son has a 3/4 or lower delivery. His curve’s break is more 11 -5 or 10 - 4 and sometimes I think he’s actually throwing a slider. Keep the great work!
I throw it different i keep pressure on my middle finger, and have my index finger outside the other seam. Then I kind of release it like throwing a football. It isn't great, but does run
At what mph does the seam orientation become obsolete to hitters eye. I've heard it doesn't matter if it 2 seam or 4 seam. But I heard that up to h/s that it does matter, and I don't hear it from ppl in levels after that. I'm assuming it's velo gap..
I just started to throw my slider and I was getting stuck on how the spin is supposed to go, so thank you for this and hopefully I will get better at it
Hi i really liked your video. Some times when I throw,it goes side to side, and the other times I throw ,it looks like a fastball and then slides down. I want to throw it like the second one do you have any tips. Thank you
I know this isn’t the topic of the video, but I need advice on throwing a changeup. Rapsodo is saying that my changeup has 6 inches of drop compared to my fastball has -4 inches of run (it has less run then my fastball). What metrics should I look for my changeup? Does it have enough drop?
I throw a circle change bc it works best for me. Just try and play around with different grips and figure out what the best grip is for you. A good change up can be the most effective because everyone has a decent breaking ball. Once you can throw three different pitches for strikes, it’ll make it easier for you as a pitcher and harder on hitters
May want to abandon the antiquated recommendation of not throwing curve balls/breaking balls before a "certain age". This old school teach has been disproven as injurious to young arms, growth plates, early Tommy John, etc... Everything else is excellent. Well explained. Appreciate the videos Dan.
I actually messed my arm up at 10 years old trying to throw sliders and breaking balls. I don't know how exactly since I never went to a doc, but I could only pitch 3 innings because my elbow would feel like it's getting stabbed and burn.
Hey Coach, in the last few years we have seen and heard announcers and others around the game talk about The Sweeper. Is The Sweeper an effective pitch for some guys or is that really just a mis-thrown curve or slider? Thanks for all of your great videos and I enjoy your channel!
A misthrown slider is essentially a slurve lol. I for some reason never had *consistent* control of my curveball. But I changed to a slurve and while it wasnt as good as other guys’ curves I suddenly had near pinpoint accuracy with that slurve. And that located slurve was more effective than a on and off (more off than on ) curveball
I messed up I thought I was throwing curveballs at practice and I was throwing sliders and my catcher was said I was throwing a slider but I thought I was throwing a curve do you have any advice for me to throw a curve
im a highschool pitcher and i know its not great but ive been looking for a pitch with break that i can throw hard i overthrow my curveball horrendously
One time I was pitching to one of my friends and I threw a slider and he was batting lefty and UT started over the plate and hit his nuts and still he swung
if a hitter cant make contact on a slider, Im throwing him nothing but sliders haha. I like the sweeping slider personally. Great for first pitch strikes and back door outs against lefties (RHanded). tight sliders are good for outside corners against rh hitters or low in the zone for chased balls. Knowing how to throw both is a bonus
It’s funny that after 13 years of baseball I never had anybody tell me that my “curveball” was actually way more of a slider. I did have a decent 1-7 curve but it killed my arm as a youth. So adjusting my seams on my 4sfb. I was throwing tons of off speed before 14.

Years ago a pro pitcher wouldn't throw you a slider on a 3-2 count....now its a lot more.
This is my favorite pitch to throw and always will be.
Nah curveballs better buddy

Depends on what else you throw and what arm slot
I love Sliders, fastballs and curveballs
@@toxicdefault6753 The basic trio. Never did anyone wrong.
Thank you I never really knew how to throw a slider, this helped a lot, I just learned how to throw a knuckle curve.

I have a video on that - search my channel!
Thanks coach 🙏
Same thing with my nephew
Any thoughts on what pitchs to focus on
This guy is good. I wish I had a coach like this when I was I high school
thanks!

Great demo Dan. Thank you!
Thanks so much for the help!
One of the best sliders ive seen was from Angels relief pitcher Frankie Rodriguez who was part of the World Series Champion team in 2002
Varsity teams spam this so I needed this thank you!
Thank you very much this will help my son

the mph doesnt matter , its the rpm.

Thank you, it really helped
Now I had a 2 finger grip with close seams I threw hard and it had slight curve opposite of my sliders / curves

Thank you so much I threw a nasty slider and it was great to my average.

Oh? Where exactly did I claim it was injuring young arms, growth plates or causing Tommy John?

How does the ball rotate two directions at once? Isn’t the rotation just at 2 o’clock spinning forward? Seems to me like a kick serve in tennis
Coach Dan is there any types of drills that I can do to help me with this pitch because I’m struggling on getting both of the spins for the slider
not really
Throw the football. Pay attention to what's happening. Apply it to the baseball.

Being a lefty I always called that a drop curve, so not sure what the difference between a curve and slider is?
you are the goat
In your compilation video I can`t believe you didn`t showcase John Smoltz. Man he had a nasty slider.
yeah he did - i grew up watching the braves
Is there a way to tape a ball to emphasize the “red dot”
color the seams with a red sharpie
ok so i am 10 but yesterday at my baseball gamje i was throwing sliders but i was trying to throw a fast ball so would that still be bad for my arm
Well I turned 14 today and this is my first time watching this what a coincidence
POV you already know a slider and just wants to see the comments to see what people think about it
I don’t understand how it goes to the other side when you overload the sidw
im a highschool pitcher and i know its not great but ive been looking for a pitch with break that i can throw hard i overthrow my curveball horrendously
That’s the same grip I used on my 12-6 curve growing up. It was nasty.
What kind of t shirt is that coach?

Hear that Little League dads? No YAKERS for your kids under 14. Love it!

i lern sliders at scool
Jerad Lodge
I used to throw this so good until I put down the glove and now trying to relearn it after 3 years
I threw one yesterday that was nasty just messing around. Once i tried it on purpose i couldnt throw the damn thing anymore
I was hoping to see Klubers slider as an example. That thing is nasty.
agreed. his was a lot like John Smoltz' slider, one of the best ever IMO
I’m sorry to say this but I’m 11 and I’m very good at throwing curve balls and I throw em mostly every game😅
It does burn out my arm fast tho
Yeah thats ok

uhhhhhhhhhhhh he said people under 14 to not throw those pitches but....... im 13 and throw a fastball, circle changeup, slider, curve, and a cutter
yeah that's too many - each of your pitches is probably not very good if you have that many. Focus on 1 or 2 and you can develop them better.
i
When I was growing up and playing jr highschool baseball. We only had 2 pitches. Curve and fastball. Now kids are learning to throw sliders.
You can still learn two pitches or three…who says one of them has to be a curve just because that’s what you learned?
