FFMPEG for REAPER 6.43+ on Windows

- If you make videos using REAPER on Windows there are two important changes to be aware of in the REAPER 6.43 update
1 - OpenGL support for displaying video in REAPER. This will replace the default DirectShow function soon.
2 - FFMPEG v4.4 support.
In this video you'll learn how to install the correct version of FFMPEG to use with REAPER to allow exporting h.264 videos.
These changes do not affect Mac users.

You saved me. It works, at last. BTW, do NOT download the latest FFMPEG release (v5), otherwise you end up with NOT having the H264 option. Use the exact version John is using here!

You can also install FFmpeg to Windows normally and then add it to PATH (e.g. C:\Program Files\FFmpeg\bin) and REAPER will pick this one first without the need of copy/paste to plugins. Depends on what you do, if you want to pin the ffmpeg version, then plugins directory can be OK, if you use ffmpeg for other things on the command line and upgrade it, you may rely on the PATH variable. I'm installing and upgrading programs mostly via Chocolatey and use Rapid Environment Editor for variable settings (like PATH).
I didn't know of Rapid Environment Editor. Thanks for the tip! I doubt that I'll need it very often, if at all, but it looks like a good tool to know.

Hi all, currently the latest version of FFmpeg 5.0 isnt supported by Reaper - I've been scratching my head for ages trying to figure out what I did wrong - Download the older 4.4.1 version and you'll be good :)

Thanks a lot, man this channel is simply awesome, I do post and music for indie films. I was skeptical about reaper but let me tell you that I´m definitely replacing both Ableton and Pro tools for Reaper, It can do what these 2 but even in a more powerful way, not to mention the prices (Avid is just ridiculous, Ableton has other cool stuff at a decent but not so affordable price IMO). Thanks again+
When starting Reaper I got error message: "C:\...\...\AppData\Roaming\REAPER\UserPlugins\avutil-56.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. ...." It worked before. Then I noticed my 7zip did unzip empty 0b files into bin directory. Had to update my 2015 7zip aplication in order to get it done. Now it works fine! Thanks.
Hi John, thanks for the amazing info. A quick question for you, I already have VLC and an older version of FFMPEG installed on my windows PC for REAPER. If I follow your steps to install the latest release will it automatically remove and overwrite the old one or do I have to Uninstall the old version first 🤔,? Thanks once again 👍

So it doesn't matter that in my mac I don't see the h.264 format when exporting through ffmpeg? It's there through AVFoundation but I've actually had issues exporting stuttering videos with it lately. Also on Video Decoder Information my ffmpeg is v54.92.100 so it made me curious if maybe that's a solution.

My preferences dont have OpenGL in the drop down menu. Is this something I need to install before trying these other steps? thanks
I did everything you said and everything looks how its supposed to, but under "Ouput" in the preferences tab I don't have the OpenGL options. The only ones that show up are the various DirectShow ones and two BitBit ones. Not sure how to fix.
EDIT: I'm an idiot and forgot to update to 6.43. All good now.

this is so frustrating. i have everything required and yet the reaper video player is just a black screen.
Can't get reaper to load version 58 instead of version 54. I've put the contents of the bin folder in userplugins, in userplugins\64 and in the program files
eaper (x64)\plugins folder - but no change. Removing the old ffmpeg.dll just results in "ffmepg/libav not found" - how can I get reaper to look at the new ffmpeg version instead of the old built in one?

Thank you for this. In the render box next to where it says video codec H.264 it defaults to 95%. What is that? I keep having the impulse to change it to 100 but since I don't understand it I leave it alone.
You can play around with that number without issues. I usually set it to 40% to keep my rendered file size down. So far I cantsee the reduction in quality on any device I have. But I am still at 1080. Ymmv
It controls the bitrate or how much detail is kept in the final video. You can also go above 100

If someone has trouble with denied access in the folder to overwrite old files with new ones - try closing reaper in this process.
Great vid, but...I downloaded ffmpeg 5.1.1 according to your instructions, and placed bin files in the UserPlugins folder but Reaper is only looking to the App folder (Plugins) which you say is incorrect. Do I put the files in there, or how do I point Reaper to the UserPlugins folder? Windows 10.
FFMPEG 4.4.1 is needed.
Ok so I tried this and I have the wrong version installed (can't see h264). Not sure where to go from here? Do I find another verison or paste the files from the ffmeg bin elsewhere? Some help would be appreciated!

I didn't have to do none of this. My laptop exports MP4 then I convert it to h264 in Premier
My version of reaper (6.46) is showing ffmpeg 54.92.100, loaded from the program files
eaper (x64)\plugins folder. How can I persuade reaper to use the new ffmpeg dlls that I’ve put in the UserPlugins folder as per the instructions on this video?
You probably downloaded version 5.0 instead of 4.4

I did all the steps and it's still saying plugins and not user plugins. It is the right version and I copied everything from bin folder into the user plugins folder. Why is it still not working?

I have a bunch of extra extensions already installed, If I update Reaper do I have to reinstall all those extensions back into the Reaper files folders? or do they just stay there working?
Its a good time to check for updates with your other extensions, but they should continue to work even if you don't.
do you also plan to add video fx in the future?

Hi ! Cannot find the 4.4.1 ffmpeg version on Gyan. I tried with "ffmpeg-n4.4-latest-win64-gpl-4.4" on the btbn but it didn't work. Someone can help me find the exact files that are downloaded here ?

Is there a way to export .mp4 without modifying the file name export?
most of the time I leave it on .mkv. Most places it doesn't matter or accept both
Hey! If somebody have trouble updating ffmpeg from 54 to 58 simply remove old files from where it's loaded.
In my case Loaded from: C:\Program Files\REAPER 5\avcodec-58.dll and put new files from bin folder in that directory.
I also removed ffmpeg file from C:\Program Files\REAPER 5\Plugins and it worked for me.

Tried this but can't persuade reaper to load version 58 instead of 54. I've put the new dlls in the userplugins folder, in the userplugins\64 folder, in the main program files plugins folder, removed the old ffmpeg.dll - but no joy - it's 54 or nothing for reaper it seems. Any suggestions?
@@drtimsparks Making sure I was using v4.4.1 and not the latest release, v5, of ffmpeg, is what did for me. It didnt recognise the latest version but going back to 4.4.1 it got it immediatly.
I just checked and Reaper comes with FFMPEG natively, so why do we need to install FFMPEG again?

because of licensing, reaper can't be distributed with the full ffmpeg while not being also open source.
Mainly this is for h.264 support.
I still cannot for the life of me get smooth playback with any video playing in Reaper. Doing my head in :)
Using VLC-64 has always been best for me. Effects like color correction and blur are still going to kill the frame rate. With multiple layers of video it helps to disable the audio on the clips.
What is "shared" in ffmpeg ?
I guess 64-bit vs 32-bit is why I couldn’t do any video on my old computer… 🤦🏿♀️

I think you have to convert to h.264, or prores.
@@TheREAPERBlog Thanx! I use transcoded compressed copies of video for editing, and I wanted to use H.265 only for the final render... Apparently I have to decompress HEVC if there is no other option

It is somewhat strange. It is smooth if you use ASIO but it is not smooth if you use WASAPI as output device
