+Freda Lyons You are so right, good times at Gilley’s..Whoop! Do you also remember which Cotton Eyed Joe song we danced to, I don’t believe it was Mickey
Heel touch front x2 Toe touch back x2 Heel touch front Full leg cross front Toe touch back Full leg cross back Side step right x2 Lasso and spin right back to original position. I have never seen it done the way in the video.
Yea that's how we do it down here in Tennessee. heel, heel, toe, toe, heel front, heel back, 3 steps right, lasso turn. Also that song wasn't cotton eye joe
Thank God I found this. I was starting to think it was all in my head. I learned it this way when I was in the 1st grade. We even did it on roller skates. I'm from Texas.
This version works better with the traditional blue grass and country variants of the song that keep accelerating in tempo. The other dance forms fit the Rednex cover and variants there on.
Interesting. I've never seen this version of the dance before. I love it when a huge group of people gets up to dance this and they all do different version It makes for great hilarity and fun as everyone tries to compensate and dance around each other. ^_^ I learned it: Right: Stomp, point Both: Shuffle, two, three Left: Stomp, point Both: Shuffle, two, three Right: Point toe, kick your hip with your heel Left: Point toe, kick your hip with your heel Both: Shuffle for an eight count I love the different variations. Awesome.
We did the cross step in a huge circle of people going around the dance floor in a circle at cotton eye joes in Chattanooga TN back in the day. And it was so fun!
I'm an East Coast Swing & Lindy Hop dancer & we used to do this at dances all the time! We did the variation with the crossover, but didn't touch our toe down (lead with the heel more). During the shuffle we would do almost form a whip where the person on the inside end of the line barely moved & the person on the outside was hauling ass. God, it was so much fun!
wow i just realized i can do little line dancing moves in my home when i'm cleaning, listening to country music. i've always wanted to learn line dancing. this video makes it so easy.
It's awesome with 2 couples. The couples actually rotate back of other couple (shuffle step) each couple takes time being in front. I use to do this as a clogging routine. Fun!!!
Where I live, we kick out with one foot, then the other and repeat I can't remember how many times, then we start jumping while spinning and making lasso motions with our arms. Then when we're done, we'll be facing a different direction and start again. A friend told me was at a convention of some sort and everyone but the people from our state were doing the version you described.
Different regions do dances differently, but where I am from it is NOT 4 shuffles (=8 counts) but rather 8 shuffles (=16 counts) between stomp patterns. (10 step has only 4 shuffles between patterns.)
Howcast - YOU ARE AMAZING!!!! You post from Food, to dances, to how to pull the __ pranks, to how to pack your car when going camping!!!!!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
That's what I am learning. I will be playing this at my Wedding August 18th. Going to teach my daughter and 3 nieces and reteach my sister. This will be fun to do again...
This is nothing like the way we do it here! xD I didn't know there were so many different ways to do this dance. I'm from Florida and I only know one way. We hop on our left foot with the right out front, touching the heel to the ground then switch it to the back with the toes on the ground, then cross it behind the left leg and slap, turn it away from the left and slap again then turn and start over.
Nice job on this ..love to line dance . You made these pretty easy for people to follow ..Posting in my line dance playlist for people who want to learn..:)
I learned a box dance. Two kicks right foot, two kicks left, then one each R L R L. Push off with grounded foot, Four steps forward, four steps back. Four steps left, four steps right. Pick a direction for everyone to turn a quarter turn. Repeat. Lots of fun, looks cool when done in tempo, and a GREAT cardio exercise!!! If anyone tries it, let me know! :)
I am not... A fan of country-music, But... I do love Blue-Grass, Hillbilly-Music, Blues, And... Rockabilly. (I'm not into commercial-music). (I prefer the underground and rare-music). And... Of course... (I love your Dancing) !!! Your-new-Fan.
exactly, i am a white boy from a mid sized town in northern michigan who is getting into the line dances now like the wobble, wop, cleveland shuffle, tootsee roll, and stuff like that. But i also like country songs, and pop, rock, and any other type of music. just because skin color is different, doesn't mean that anything else, including music choice, is different. WE ARE ALL HUMAN BEINGS
I totally agree with you Sweeteepye. No one is asking that everyone accept other people's way of doing things; but there is no need to be disrespectful and definitely no need to be mean. cade and makedonec are just showing their lack of intelligence by ranting about nothing. intelligent and secure people don't have a need to talk that way
(1)There are many different variations of a dance. I live in southern California and we do it a bit different. We start out tapping the back of our right foot twice in front of us. Then tapping the toes of our right foot twice behind us. Then do the same with the left foot. Then you do the same thing but you only tap your feet once with all the moves the next time around. Then after that you skip to the right three times and on the fourth time you spin and do a lasso with your arm and then clap.
There should be line dancing/ exercising videos. Would be FUN exercise for those of us who can't do moderate to intense exercise. (Maybe there are videos like that. I'll have to look.)
I for got a step inbetween toes and side stepping... You touch you foot it front and then on the ground and then touch it in the back then on the floor and then you do the sidestep thing
I've never seen anyone do the cotton eyed joe like this lol. we always do two taps forward two taps back, then you tap your toe with your hand in front of you, put it down, tap it with your hand behind you, shuffle then spin back
I like the video, despite the "America's music" comment. It reminds me of "Disco Break" that aired in between TV shows in the late '70's. (Gee, that sounded old.)
After watching a bunch of vids, I dont believe there are only two variations of this dance. Where I'm from, we put our right foot out and tap the heel twice, then put it back and tap your toes twice. Then swing your right leg up and across to the front and touch with your left hand, then swing up and across except to the back this time and touch with left hand. Then shuffle to the right and finally spin back to the left. Do it again except with left leg and right hand, and repeat alternating.
Lol i learned the dance in first grade. We did a hand oppostie toe touch one in front and one in back of the other leg. Then we did it the mirrored way. Then two heel touches with one foot then with the other. Then the right spin step with the lasso and a clap to end it. Switch which way you spin step the second time. Maybe it's just me! Hahah
"America's Music" is actually Blues and Jazz, as those are the only styles that actually originated in America. Country music originated in the UK as folk ballads that were brought to the US with immigrants who settled throughout the American south. Like other musical styles it has evolved over time and in its current incarnation it is quite different. American country music is really the "top 40" equivalent of folk ballads from days long past.
I was lowkey hoping for a more intense dance. But hey! At least I know one variation of Cotton Eye Joe. Maybe one day I'll learn a more intense version
In this traditional variation the intensity comes from the constant acceleration of the music throughout the song. They basically keep getting faster till the dancers can no longer keep up with the steps and the travel portion.
You need to go to a Czech Polka Dance to get the real way to do this song. Come to Texas and follow bands like The Red Ravens, The Texas Plainsmen, and the Duijka Brothers to know how to dance it the right way. Heck even watch the movie Urban Cowboy. That is the real way to dance it!
This is the way we did it in the 70's at Gilley's and the country bars.So much fun!
And how we did it at The Winchester Club with Isaac Payton Sweat and The Texas Sweat Band. RIP Ikey
+Freda Lyons You are so right, good times at Gilley’s..Whoop! Do you also remember which Cotton Eyed Joe song we danced to, I don’t believe it was Mickey
Yeessss!!
Made the rounds in the late ‘80s and early 90s. Cotton-Eyed Joe’s and Jitterbugs in Nacogdoches, 😎
Yessssss!!!!!
Heel touch front x2
Toe touch back x2
Heel touch front
Full leg cross front
Toe touch back
Full leg cross back
Side step right x2
Lasso and spin right back to original position.
I have never seen it done the way in the video.
watch?v=yBsoCICwEAY
That's the way I do it
Yea that's how we do it down here in Tennessee. heel, heel, toe, toe, heel front, heel back, 3 steps right, lasso turn. Also that song wasn't cotton eye joe
Ninonybox I need you to teach me how to do this!! Lol
Exactly that's how I do it

@@ritaslingers7307 Ik kom uit Nederland.. dans al 30 jaar linedance.
Me too!
You taught me to do line dancing some years ago. You make it so simple. Thank you so much.
robert royston is one of the nicest human beings you will ever meet! thanks robert!
Interesting. I've never seen this version of the dance before. I love it when a huge group of people gets up to dance this and they all do different version It makes for great hilarity and fun as everyone tries to compensate and dance around each other. ^_^
I learned it:
Right: Stomp, point
Both: Shuffle, two, three
Left: Stomp, point
Both: Shuffle, two, three
Right: Point toe, kick your hip with your heel
Left: Point toe, kick your hip with your heel
Both: Shuffle for an eight count
I love the different variations. Awesome.
We did the cross step in a huge circle of people going around the dance floor in a circle at cotton eye joes in Chattanooga TN back in the day. And it was so fun!
I'm 76 years old and enjoy any linedancing tremendously. Best form of exercise
I am from rural Wichita, KS and we do this back home. This is accurate.
This must be how cityfolk do it cause I've never seen it done this way
Agreed. This makes me wonder where this version is popular..
Guess you're not as country as you think.
Speak for yourself Arlo
Ok this might be the one they use where you're from, but where I'm from it's completely different. Arlo
Me to i do it different
I'm an East Coast Swing & Lindy Hop dancer & we used to do this at dances all the time! We did the variation with the crossover, but didn't touch our toe down (lead with the heel more). I was thinking, this dance doesn’t look anything like the one I’ve seen and then the music started playing and it’s not even the right song 🤷♀️
BADA BA DEE DA COTTON EYE JOE!
Lucien Ramirez AHAHHAHA
OK. Viva Rednex: Cotton Eye Joe USA 2023. ❤😂🎉😮😅😊
Ikr
This is how I learned it 10 years ago in GA so the steps he is showing are what the people taught me!!
I worked at a steak house restaurant in Texas where they taught line dancing on weekends. This is how we did Cotton Eyed Joe there.
Where I come from we do it a lot different than that
Same
+Alexandria Greene yeah I do It different too
+Alexandria Greene ya we do front touch twice back twice then across infront then behind four steps to the right clap and then back left
same but mine is spin left
+Fake Dan Howell (Vriska Serket) SAME! Where are you from?
I am 36 years old. Thank you!! My Fiance wants to keep line dancing out, but it is something to do!! Also doing the Electric slide and Mocarana.
YOu mean the Macarena ? I met my girlfriend on linedancing in 1984 still dancing together in Holland.

He left out the part where you yell "BULL SH**!" 😂
Plus you do shuffle for 16 counts, then the touch step for 16 counts. I am a pro line dancer, this guy is not.
I've been doing this dance for a few years now and never have I seen it done this way!! I like the way I was taught much better!!
I love your teaching... (You make it look easy, fun, And... You explain very-well).
I'll be watching you..
I think... I am now a fan.
stomp, kick, the triple step..........oops I hit the wall.
GG XD
This is a version I learned way back. We all went in a large circle around the dance floor.
This is the line dance I've always remembered for cotton eye joe since i was a kid.
Nice job on this ..love to line dance . You made these pretty easy for people to follow ..Posting in my line dance playlist for people who want to learn..:)

Love country but jazz too is America's music, and so is drum beating.
I'm glad I know how to do cotton eyed joe now, cuz I looked so stupid at a school dance when i didn't know how!
exactly, i am a white boy from a mid sized town in northern michigan who is getting into the line dances now like the wobble, wop, cleveland shuffle, tootsee roll, and stuff like that. I just learned this today in school this is a very fun dance to do and to my fav. country song :)

Hope it’s better now
We have to line dance in gym so I'm looking at some dance moves I hope it's easy.
Really fun song to line dance to
i love dancing and hve picked up line dancing easily..
I feel like even if you’ve never heard this song, if it comes on at a party you know how to do it.
There should be line dancing/ exercising videos. Would be FUN exercise for those of us who can't do moderate to intense exercise. (Maybe there are videos like that. I'll have to look.)
Love Robert's work, it's ALWAYS top quality and right on.
I live in Northern California and we do it the first variation they video showed.
nicely done you're a very good teacher ,thank you for sharing your talent and knowledge with me and the audience.kudos
we danced to this twice at my prom lol:) I love the south!!!
I for got a step inbetween toes and side stepping... You touch you foot it front and then on the ground and then touch it in the back then on the floor and then you do the sidestep thing
Thank You, I needed to learn this dance for school.
Fun dance! Please teach us the Big Thang 4 Big Girls line dance...it looks like a bunch of fun
Thats all right some videos are doing it free syle but this is the traditional way and yes it was 8 shuffles or it can be 8 skips
This dance is very helpful!
In Vermont we do a heel and toe tap-like move instead of the stomp or crossover.
This is the way we did it at the Palomino in Wilmington NC!
This helped me learn more than i do in school
Where I'm from it's SO different.
Right leg: tap 2 times in front then back then cross in front then cross in back then turn.
DANCE DANCE REVOLUTION DOESN'T COUNT AS DANCING!
I do love the cross & kick !!!!!! :-)
Great tutorial love I always wanted to learned country dance and you make it so easy. Thanks!!!
Thats awesome thanks from Finland !

I've never seen anyone do the cotton eyed joe like this lol. we always do two taps forward two taps back, then you tap your toe with your hand in front of you, put it down, tap it with your hand behind you, shuffle then spin back
Robert is doing the version that has been around for more than 30 years. You may know a newer version.
I like the video, despite the "America's music" comment. It reminds me of "Disco Break" that aired in between TV shows in the late '70's. (Gee, that sounded old.)
I'd like to download this music for a class. Does anyone know whose version it is?
I loved teaching this to my students :) they seemed to enjoyed my way of exercise then my assitant :)
I so love to dance to this song :D

You are so right Roxie Sheppard! Your neighbor in New Mexico!
