      I think this maybe an old page they've accidentally left live.
      Clicking the "Shop now" icon, and searching for "printer", it isn't coming up, so sadly I think they may no longer sell it online at least.

    I got one of these for my birthday a few years back and put it together half drunk because it was the highlight of my birthday party. I had a lot of failed prints at the start because I didn't get the concept of supports but it was an awesome start into 3d printing for me.

    Really really impressed with mine. It was a supposed defect return refurb whatever. It literally ran 10 min out of the box. Amazed at the accuracy and reliability. Having started 3d printing 6 years ago and having my own 3d printer manufacturing company I can say it is very impressive

    I have this same printer as a Monoprice Maker Select Plus.
    The issue you had with leveling is the same I had. When the power is off to the printer, the servos for the Z-axis turn easily. This causes the level to be off/angled during shipping. Turn the power off and you can turn them easily. Instead of eyeing up like you did, you can just put one glue stick to each side from behind and easy enough to level.

    I was very tempted to buy it a year ago - glad I didn't because from what I can see, the Ender 3 is not only less than half the price, it has much superior print quality and is tinker-friendly. It's good to see 3D printing progress and at the same time drop in price so quickly.

    With my A8 I measured the level of each side with a caliper after manually turning the motor shaft and bringing them down to almost meet the bed. Once I determined that each side was the same height with plenty of travel on the the bed level screws I levelled it.

    Got mine for $199 two weeks ago. Could not have been tested in factory cause the z axis switch was 1cm out of adjustment. I had to drill holes further down. I saw on Cocoon website they were selling seconds for $199, so I guess I got one of those. Aldi didn't advertise it. A few other issues, like y axis guide rod falling out resulting in a big blob of plastic around the extruder(loose grub screw). Other than that, it prints well. Just a bit frustrating at times!

    Hi Michael,
    I bought one last year and I see them advertised again this year. I had similar problems as you in setting up and getting the print quality. You're right the rubber pieces are the feet to take any vibrations out of the equation. I don't use them as I have mine mounted on a very dense piece of industrial carpet for the same effect. I have had a little experience with UPS printers and two custom made printer. I will agree with you that they are a good first printer for the novice 3D'er. Mine does a very good job with the latest Cura software.
    Cheers and that you for the review

    I bought this printer last year. I have used a 3D printer once before so had some idea what to expect. I followed the instructions and my first test print was excellent. Second print was a fail for many reasons. Next print I made sure the bed was level. i used a 0.1mm feeler gauge and it worked beautifully. Found that the print speed has a lot to do with initial plastic adhesion to the bed. And i found the same bug where the X gantry tries to go through the top gantry. I am happy with the printer and would say that its easy for a first timer, but you may need to put in some effort to diagnose the inevitable printer problems (which are NOT the fault of the printer itself)

    Excellent Video! I too have a Solidoodle 2. It was a great printer to learn on but have since upgraded to a Tevo Tornado. The Cocoon looks like a sturdy unit, but it, like the current batch of affordable 3D printers, still requires a good amount of fiddling and tweaking. Still... it's good to see 3D printers pushing further into the mainstream consumer market.

    Looks like a decent starting point. I have an Anycubic I3 and it has a similar robust steel frame too. The bed will be much improved by binning the springs and using double thumb-wheels to set levelling , which also reduces play in X and Y axis. Definitely not for beginners with those teething troubles and poor instructions but potentially a decent printer with some geeking. Great video, and very informative!

    How do you print models that have multiple different colors, or do you use paint to change the colors where needed?

    • @TeachingTech
      @TeachingTech  6 років тому

      Three options (for FDM printers like this):
      1. Buy a printer with multiple extruders or use an aftermarket solution like the Prusa MMU or Palette.
      2. Switch filament mid print. This only allows changes in vertical bands.
      3. Paint afterwards.
      Otherwise google polyjet printers.

    Did the instructions say to start by turning the screws anticlockwise or did they say lower the bed? Because you were turning them clockwise (at least according the usual perspective of turning a screw from then head end - but they are facing up so you may have called that "clockwise" because you were looking down on it). Perhaps the instructions were ambiguous.

    • @TeachingTech
      @TeachingTech  7 років тому +3

      +Izzard it was probably the way I worded it that brings confusion. Just to clarify you are meant to turn until the build surface is as far away from the nozzle as possible.

    • @vistron888
      @vistron888 6 років тому

      It is kinda ambiguous but they do mean to tighten the thumbscrews. So clockwise in the normal manner looking from the head of the thumbwheel but anti-clockwise looking at them from the top. They do say to tighten until they stop bringing the two beds close together. Loosening them would just remove them altogether and have the opposite affect.
      I had no issue with the levelling stage.

    From what I know about Aldi which is a private family company. They only sell quality for the best price, it's obvious their buyers get the best they can for the price point. If a price comes down, they lower the price whether it be eggs or milk. That's why the are becoming the world largest store and I save much every month on groceries. The also give a double back guarantee, you get your money back plus a replacement on most food items if not happy with item. Most items like jar items ketchup, jelly, pickles...are less than 1.50 and large size, cereals 1.50-$2 18oz, bread .89-1.50 and so on. Other stores including Wal-mart don't even come close. And this printer special buy is another example, they always get special buys in.

    • @TeachingTech
      @TeachingTech  6 років тому +1

      I agree with the notion that they try to look after the customer.

    • @gmonkman
      @gmonkman 6 років тому

      Agree, people can spend a few hours making up their mind which seller looks least dodgy on ebay/alibaba etc, but Aldi offer a no quibble returns policy. Otherwise all you are doing is gambling with a stake which is the cost of the printer.
      If people have the confidence to fix problems themselves, then the gamble may be worth it, otherwise this looks like a good option.

  • @altarazul2

    When you put the printer settings I saw you leave the filament diameter like it was 3mm and I think you were using 1.75mm filament. That could be the reason for the under extrusion.

    so i got one of these a few weeks ago and had every single issue you did, though i did find a special copy of cura on the included sd card which im using for it right now. also i did read in the instructions about the rubber feet i think it was the first step but yea not clear what the white tube was for. this video helped a bit i think but itd be great if i knew how to fix the horizontal stuff like you said as the back right of the bed barely touches compared to the other corners.

    • @jackass123455

      Aldi is a German company. Its short for Albrecht Diskont. Albrecht being the founder and Diskont something along the lines of discounter. That was in 1913 and it was a single store in the heart of Germany. After the second world war his two sons took over the business and expanded rapidly in Germany, having already 100 stores by 1955. In 1961 the split up the business into Aldi Nord (North) and Aldi Süd (south). The logo represents that by one being Blue/white (North) the other one having more blue and a bright orange frame around it (south). In Germany there are over 4200 shops but even in the USA there are over 2000 now. Apparently they are also present in the USA with a brand called Trader Joe's.
      I think in Germany they haven't sold a 3d Printer yet. They were among the first discounters though to sell PC's and Laptops well over 10 years ago i think.
      For normal products they are famous to work with top brands and sell them under private Label and never reveal who the real manufacturer is.
      Cheers from Germany!

    Maybe you should rub a small amount of silicone spray onto the surface of your build plate to prevent sticking and requiring a scraper which is capable of damaging the plate. You could also place some waxed paper as an alternative .

      3d printer beds are quite an anomaly. You want them to stick really hard but then release easily and cleanly after the print. I've found this surface quite good so far.

  • @AmusementLabs

    the printer nozzle going up and up and up
    is a bug in the reprap software (a lot of versions have this)
    its not known how or why this bug happens.
    i know someone who has a (custom reprap) printer which has the exact same issue.
    reloading the firmware will solve it for a long period of time

    Please can you tell me the build quality, Are the grey parts plastic or metal, are the bearing good quality, and the wiring and power supply good quality overall would you consider the product well engineered? Liked the review

    • @TeachingTech
      @TeachingTech  7 років тому

      Build quality is very good, this thing is a tank. All the grey parts are sheet metal, even the cooling fan shroud. Bearings are pretty typical of 3D printers, everything slides without fuss or noise. Power supply is completely enclosed under the bed, wiring is well packaged and insulated. Defnitely rate the engineering of the product. Thanks for watching!

    That was a very civil gesture near end of this vid to say what you did in conclusion. Very reasonable. I applaud you! Any rational person is not going expect the same results that will be rendered by the most advanced state-of-the-art 3D machine. It's an Aldi's brand after all, and ok for folks on a budget until they are able to do better for themselves. Folks with MONEY, well, they can easily skip the Aldi offer.
    If my kid was begging me for A 3d printer I'd get him an Aldi one. If he or she showed me they are serious in wanting to persue 3d printing as a career and they take good care of the system, THEN I'd do what I can, make sacrifices for myself, deny buying myself things I may have wanted for a while, work extra overtime, whathaveyou to get them the best there is out there for their birthday or Xmas. We may have to eat beans and rice for a while, but they WILL have the best, or something next to it.
    It doesn't make sense parents buying their kids veeery expensive items of a certain type and class, and it turns out to be a waste of money because lil Jimmy or Cathy played with it for a bit, and soon after, just completely lost interest and threw it to the side and abaondoned the sonuvabitch for good. So like where was the wisdom in THAT?!?! Sheese man!!

    • @TeachingTech
      @TeachingTech  6 років тому

      Thanks for the well considered response. You can get this printer cheaper online, but that's not as accessible for someone who wants an easy return and warranty. A 3D printer is a great investment for a motivated child. It's like Lego for a new generation because there is no limits on what they can design and make.

      Yeah. Yet I would encourage him or her to explore handicraft. Working with bits of wood, plastic, metal, etc. to fashion by hand and tool the item he or she needs to make for the moving and static parts the idea requires to materialize. This develops the aptitide of resourcefulness, in case the printer temporarily is on the fritz, has bitten the dust, or has encounter the limits of it's usefulness. These two skills will, I believe, afford an edge. A powerful one at that.
      What say you?

      +spanishflew you've opened up a can of worms! The plastic is pla which is a huge plus. For teaching tech, you forgot to RTFM the manual properly. Page 26 of the manual states to insert the SD Card with the contacts facing up.From the manual.3.4.2 Printing from the SD Card1. Insert the included SD card into the slot on the right side of the 3D Printer, ensuring that the metal contacts are facing upwardsIn the Cura software, you left the filament set to 2.85. The default may have been changed in the software without Cocoon's knowledge.The rubber sections are feet that go on the front, rear and side panels. You will see one on page 14 and 16 of the manual near the power socket.It is noted somewhere, just can't find the location.The clicking noise when the Z-Axis gets to the top is the sound of the ball screw dropping back down on the thread after it is lifted up in each revolution. Not the stepper motors as you said it was. I had the same problem and checked where the noise was emanating from. It comes from the top of the gantry not the bottom where the motors are. As you said, hopefully there will be a firmware update to fix this soon.The instructions to screw the bed down as far as it will go is to make sure that the nozzle doesn't initially plough into the bed when levelling.In the parts list, the plastic tube is identified as a Replacement PTFE Tube.

      +Brad Coleman thanks for your detailed comment. The video is from the point of view of a beginner, so it's understandable that mistakes may be made. I worded the clicking part poorly but I meant to say what you described. They are acme lead screws, not ball screws btw.
      RTFM is a phrase I wish I could say to students sometimes at school. :)

    There are more "user friendly" 3d printers in that price range for beginners. For example, the XYZ mini is a straight out of the box printer that has auto bed levelling and it's own creation and slicing software for around £200 here in the UK, the only drawback with the XYZ mini is the fact that it's tied in to the XYZ filament via a NFC card supplied with each roll of filament (although this can be overcome with a little googling). There are advantages of the tie in with the filament though, the temperature settings are automatically read from the NFC card and the filament is very good quality, the disadvantage is it's not the cheapest filament and you're limited on colours and types of filament.
