- Short video on some general guidelines we use when sizing people for a new custom Greenland Paddle.
Remember, these are just guidelines. We often adjust the numbers a bit after talking/ emailing back and forth with people in order to fine tune the specs for the individual customer.
Over the years, we have now built well over 1500 Greenland Paddles and have shipped all over the world.

Great video! My ideal length of paddle is about 208-210 cm but as I have narrow kayaks I prefer a slightly shorter paddle, 205 cm. I feel as that makes me a bit more agile when paddling, especially when maneuvering. But I use my sholderless paddle a bit like a storm paddle sometimes, I move my hands a lot along the loom and the blades.
Keep you interesting videos coming!
Should have another video up in a few days about paddles. Will also be doing videos on some more trips soon as well.
Excellent video Joe. Those subs are climbing! It is a slow process and that first 1,000 is the hardest! Well on your way!
Getting there. Just need to start doing videos again. Got swamped with orders for my woodworking stuff during this pandemic. Finally starting to slow down to a manageable workload now. Already got two new videos ready for editing.
Hi Joe, can I have a wider (3.5 inch) 230cm paddle ( no shoulder) oiled made and sent to BC Canada?
Yeah, for sure. Go to my website, www.joeopaddles.com and send me an email off of their please.
I have a 29.5" sit inside kayak. How much would you recommend I add to my loom and overall length measurements?
Looking to make a laminated Greenland paddle. What species and thicknesses do you recommend for laminates to maximize strength/flexibility and minimize weight? (Don’t think you have a video on this topic) - thanks!
great video
Thanks Gerry
Does Greenland paddles work well with sit on kayaks
Yes, you just go a little longer on the length to help compensate for the wider width of most sit on top kayaks.
does it matter what kind of kayak you use to use a greenland paddle?
Works fine with any sea kayak, rec kayak etc. Myself and others have used them with surfskis and I've sold a lot to people that use them with a solo canoe.
Where do you order?
Hi Joe,
Where are you located?
Here is my website.

what about the thickness of the loom ?
Usually around 1.5" X 1.25" for the one piece paddles.
For 2 piece paddles, either a 1.25" diameter loom/ carbon ferrule or a 1.5" diameter loom/ carbon ferrule.
@@JoeOsChannel i asked because i found a greenland sizing and it says do as in you vid.
but also says make a circle with your thumb and forefinger. This actually forms a rectangle. Take both measurements. The longer measurement is the loom width. The shorter measurement is the loom height.
my measurements are
tip to tip 66" (168cm) plus elbow to tip 16"(41cm) = 82"(208cm-209cm)
loom 17" (44cm)
finger loop 1and 3 quarter inches (4 and a half cm) at longest and 1 and a half (4cm) shorter
so i estimate a paddle length of 82 and a half inches (210cm ) - 84 and ahalf inches (215cm)
would that be about right ?
@@sme4969 Those numbers are right in line wit what I make the most of.
