Hi - any issues with cold toes requiring a gaiter setup over your boots or do you switch to a much more insulated design if colder temps are expected ?

You ski with the binding heel cables always on when doing your expeditions?
Yes - more secure, takes the load off the 3-pin binding bail, more efficient.
Very nice review. Is there any particular reason you chose the Nansen over the Asnes Amundsen skis? Also, wouldn't full skins work better for steeper slopes and rough terrain (sastrugi)?
Wondering this too, I thought the Amundsens were the top choice for expeditions on flat(ish) land with crust and windpack.
The Asnes Børge Ousland and Gamme are even more versatile expedition skis. They glide almost as well as the Amundsen, but have some tip rocker to make them more manageable when there are hills.
On the flip side, with the nylon skins on the skis, there isn't going to be all that much glide, and stability may be the most important factor. The Nansen absolutely shines when it comes to stability.
good insight!

thanks. great review and info, as usual. 😀
Thanks for watching!
What are your thoughts on the the shorter but wider hunter or Siberian ski shoes? Kind of a hybrid as if cross country skis and snow shoes were to produce offspring. I suspect they would not be suited for expedition use but look like they could be useful for those in wooded areas.
Slower than skis but faster and more energy efficient than snow shoes.
Just curious what you think.
They look interesting!

Basically super short skis with half skins. In dense forest, I see the value.
I just use my Dynafit skis so I can go over any conditions. For something that short and for random hauling, I wouldn't want to lose the crampon ability of the snowshoes.
Let me know how they work for you if you get them!
@@ALinsdau Thanks, presently in a snow free zone of the US for work and not much opportunity to get to snowy areas but definitely eyeing them in two years as I will be heading North again, back to the land of ice and snow and -40 F. The family misses winter (today is about 70 F) so getting my winter fix vicariously through UA-cam.
I made a video to help answer your question:

@@ALinsdau Thanks, comes up as private
Glide wise, something like an Altai Hok, with a big mohair skin, is not going to be much worse than an Asnes Nansen or Amundsen with a short nylon skin. On flat terrain, they may well end up fairly comparable.
However, polar snow tends to be wind swept and very hard packed, which means a soft boot will not be enough to turn something wide on its edge for good downhill control. With comfortable polar boots, it should be easier to control narrow skis, rather than wider skishoes.
Agreed Aaron companies making arctic gear need to listen and use Metal fittings where possible, cutting corners with plastic can cost people time or worse their life.
Yup, (American) companies like to save a few nickels here and there and it shows.
@@ALinsdau surprisingly I still find the American companies better quality than most it must be a consumer trend.
So, steel edges, or not? What's the highlights?

btw, I really wonder why it's been called "touring" for some time now. Classic cross-country / long-distance skiing IS what touring is all about, NOT climbing a mountain and race down-hill. What did the marketing ppl think? really?
The name "touring" never quite made sense to me either.
at least here in Sweden we prefer full length skins for pullying pulkas.
Longer than 195 skis?
@@ALinsdau skins not skis :) My skis are just about 195 I think.
