    Pease enjoy this transcription and analysis of the film scoring cue "Journey to the West" (from the movie "Mononoke Hime"; composer: Joe Hisaishi).
    BTW, it's a beautiful movie with an outstandingly real and honest story: you should watch it.
    This is a little teaser, the beautiful cue "The Legend of Ashitaka" has been removed from youtube so it's on my Patreon account.
    It is my first time adding notes / little analysis to a score for other people,
    and I would really like to do more and better for who is interested in orchestral and film music:
    please let me know if you would prefer something done differently in the future (example: reduced score in fewer staves, just piano reduction, transposed score, more/less written notes, bigger text, bigger music, etc).
    I was writing this for a potential concert, canceled because of the virus, so I then decided to analyze it and upload it for everyone's benefit.
    [Some differences from the original cue are due to the specificity of the orchestra. For example, often Violin 2 is doubling the Viola, because our viola section was rather small)]
    ~ ~ ~
    Original composition: Joe Hisaishi
    Transcription and notes: Tommaso Annoni

    I do not own the right to the music, nor to the images from the movie.
    I did the music transcription and analysis, explanations, etc.

    I think it’s really interesting how Hisaishi uses the brass instruments in the latter part of the song. Brass instruments have always been used as an instrument to either present royalty (i.e. the presentation of kings & queens) or doing salutes (ex. The military throughout world history).
    When I hear this it makes me think of military funerals and how horns are played there. This makes me think Hisaishi put this there story-wise to remind people of death of a part of the character of Ashitaka. He separates from his family and can never come back; he is dead to them and vice versa; it’s the last time we see them in the film. Might be reaching, but I love the potential storytelling that Hisaishi is doing in his music, all with just a couple of notes & a solo.
    Keep up the great videos man, this was great!

    • @tommasoannoni481

      That's true, brass were born for calling (war/hunt horns) and celebrations often related to royalties etc (and even nowadays there are brass bands etc), so it does connect with Ashitaka being a prince.
      I think musically it was also to have a "cool-down" section after the full orchestra that was still "warm" (sometimes he uses Woodwinds alone, this time brass makes sense).
      And thank you for your kind words! More content is coming, also tomorrow I am giving a talk about 'Interactive Music in Games' at Game Sound Conference.

    Superb analysis - I like the balance between your own subjective opinions with the harmony and technical stuff.. really visual as well which is great for creative people / kinaesthetic learners.. I think the full score is always better as you can see how the themes are passed around and developed within the texture and better to understand orchestration in terms of the role of each instrument family - great work!! ✨🙏🏻✨

    Hello! I have a question, its really important for me: what is this instrument that plays high solo in the original score on the 1:56? I know that in many orchestrations it's flute or flute piccolo, but in original score this sound is so orientaI or ancient (more like high duduk). I am looking for this answer for 15 years, maybe you will know something about it. Love your content, you have such a talent ❤

    • @tommasoannoni481
      @tommasoannoni481  6 місяців тому

      It's definitely a double reed, probably a Hichiriki? But I am not 100% sure.
      And, I think it's played *very* well (the legato and the soft/delicate moments, even such a short phrase is not easy to be played that clean!).
      In the original, the previous line of flute is not played on European flutes (likely some Japanese wooden flutes?).
      Then, the melody you refer to, it's definitely a double reed instrument, over the pizzicato strings.
      I am not an expert of Japanese instruments, but my best guess is that it's the Hichiriki.
      It's "similar" to the oboe (in that is a high range double reed), and it may look like a duduk (or a piccolo flute body, which has a straight "embrochure" and a double reed), but it's different.
      The sound of the duduk is definitely different, more "dark" if you want, and there are less higher resonances (although it varies with range, and also it depends on the hardness of the reed, but for that melody I don't think it's a duduk, which also is a middle easter instrument. But that's a good guess! We could say that the Hichiriki is the Duduk's Japanese cousin - and vice-versa).
      Hichiriki can have quite a different color when it plays lower, but when it gets high, that "Journey to the West" sound comes alive.
      For example, if you listen for this piece here (link below, Hichiriki is the player on the left of the screen),
      already from the first note you can tell that the tone-color is very similar to that Hisaishi solo (just a 2nd or 3rd below it, but the color gets very close):
      ua-cam.com/video/yXPGIMm-xEI/v-deo.html&ab_channel=whatdafunk6
      I hope that helps!
      The only way to know for sure would be:
      1) contacting someone that worked on the score, or the recording;
      2) finding a released album which "book" contains the name of all the orchestral players ("ethnic" solos may be mentioned even if the whole orchestra is not mentioned);
      3) contact anyone that plays the Hichiriki (like from a facebook group dedicated to the instrument, or from reddit), sending them a link to the original track (like from spotify for example) and asking them if they think that's a Hichiriki or not.
      And, thank you for your kind words!
      PS:
      maybe this example of the Hichiriki here is better:

      I'll be honest: since I could not find the score for this movie, and I transcribed all by ear, it took a lot of time.
      So I am thinking of creating some more material and then opening maybe a Patreon (so I can offer the clean and analyzed score for a low tier, and then maybe more materials for a higher tier). Or maybe a paid enhanced youtube channel with resources, like Film Scoring Analysis. I'm not sure yet.
      Would that interest you?

      Sorry that I never saw your comment until now:
      - I used Finale to write the music (I also use Sibelius, but recently I switched to Dorico) (aided with a piano to check the notes).
      - Then I used the "Preview" app in Mac to make the colors, highlights, arrows, added notes, etc (adding notes on PDF, lated converted in JPEG, if I remember correctly).
      - Then I used Final Cut Pro to make the video (with fades between each appearance of new highlights etc).

    How do you avoid copy-strike with a video like this?

    • @tommasoannoni481
      @tommasoannoni481  3 роки тому

      The music is instantly recognized, therefore I cannot monetize the video (you can see the info about the track used just below the video description).
      This happens because the music is already on youtube (the publisher gave permission to use it on youtube and it is already uploaded in some other video by them).
      I am not sure why similar content is instead banned.
      I wish some real person could review my banned videos, to understand that my work is analysis, I used material already on youtube, and I am also using content under the educational purpose law.
      I honestly do not know how to avoid the “copyright-strike” when it happens.

    Lol, it seems that you don't had a lot of fun with your harmony teacher. xD I didn't either, when I compose I don't usually care about resolutions and weird duplications as long as it sounds good to me.

    :D One of my most favorite music for a animated film...Unfortunately this is not original...it is more orchestrated but in my opinion something should not be there...for ex. bar 21 even it is in released soundtrack there are wrong notes in clarinet and oboe (this shouldn't be there at all). :) In the case you want to use chord progression I would gladly suggest using a proper ones (C5, D5, E5 - Am, Bm, C, Bm, Cadd2, Dadd2 D, Gadd2, G ). But nicely analyzed...

      Thank you for your suggestions.
      I used the reference track that is in the video description (the ost cue is on youtube, but not available in USA, so I also wanted to avoid the video being taken down). I agree that bar 21 is weird.
      Also in the start of page 2 the original has no strings, for example.
      I will be more precise with the harmonic analysis in the future, if that’s important to people, but honestly if there is a 9th that resolve in half bar, I don’t really want to analyze as “Dadd2 D”: the score is there and everyone can se what happens counterpoint-wise (it’s even colored), so I think I prefer to have the harmonic analysis highlight the bigger context, so that at first glance everything is clear (direction wise and key center wise). I’ll think about it.
      But thank you for your notes!
