I have a very fond memory of riding the trolleys from Mattapan to the Esplanade to see Arthur Fielder conduct the Boston Pops on a weekend afternoon with my Great Grandmother around 1978.
All the transit companies and authorities pulled up their streetcar tracks because either they were bought out or lobbied by GM/ General Tire/Standard Oil-owned National City Lines, or had problems with reliability and service due to the infestation of every major street with cars and busses!
Nice Video and Narration! I love the first part of the film in color! I wonder who did the effort to colorize it? I travel to Boston from Lawrence, Ma and it is Great to see old videos like these! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
He sounds like my dad who was born in Boston in 1943. I was also born in Boston but have lived in the midwest my entire adult life so the accent only comes out occasionally.
Love those Type 5s! Foster picked such perfect music for his videos yet he probably had no idea!

I grew up in Quincy and didn't know that trolleys ran down Hancock St, thru the square and then to Fore River!
Trams / trolleys / street cars, ran everywhere in urban areas at one time.

Fascinating film.
This is cool, I've ridden on many of these lines... well a few of them...
I drove a MBTA bus 🚌 for 23 years.
Exactly 36 years and 1 day before I was born in Dorchester. Very cool
They should have this videos play at every station

Well, at least you can still ride PCCs from Mattapan to points west. Not that I actually did that while I was in Boston...
This is fantastic. Thank you so much!
That's an old Boston accent. When was this film narrated?
Not sure. I think maybe in the 1990s
