- The pure dance sequence in Odissi is called a Pallavi. The word pallavi means to blossom. Just like the blossoming of a flower, the pallavi slowly builds up from slow graceful, lyrical movements in a crescendo to reach a fast tempo at the end.
In this item the dominant mood and the subtle nuances of the raga are explored and translated into dance movements, embellished with numerous sculpturesque poses and fluid movements, that are typical to Odissi.

Very beautiful dancer with great physique and extremely fit to perform long pieces with consistent grace and poise with no signs of fatigue.. My hats off to her discipline, commitment and sheer love of her artistry in Odissi. Always a pleasure to watch her dance 👍👍👍
The musical 'mukha' of this rather famous Pallavi is by one of my late and most renowned Gurus: Guru Deba Prasad Das, who taught me at home for 5 years. I learned his Kalavati Pallavi from him in 1971. My other gurus are Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, who taught me for 12 years (also at home), and Guru Pankaj Das. Guru Debaprasad Das and Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra taught my elder sister at my grandfather's home in Cuttack when she was 5!
As well, Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra taught my father's sister in Cuttack in the very early 1950s (about 1951).
