From time to time I am haunted by this tune, especially that viola de gamba line. The progression is very Bach sounding. When added to the counterpoint created with the Basso it's an impressive presentation. The human voice of the bass singer caps it off. I've noticed a professional courtesy that Bach gives to ensemble musicians. Everyone gets a chance to shine. Everyone gets a chance to rest and listen to excellent music.
Komm, süßes Kreuz, Come, sweet Cross, so will ich sagen, this I want to say: Mein Jesu, gib es immer her! My Jesus, give it always to me! Wird mein Leiden einst zu schwer, If my suffering becomes too heavy one day, So hilfst du mir es selber tragen. you yourself will help me bear it.
The raw, scratching tone and plodding melody is clearly meant as a representation of the raw, bloody-footed trudge up the hill. This is why the gamba version will always, always, always be superior to the lute version. The aria becomes a tone poem when played with this instrument.
One of my colleagues from Germany said to me, "Bach was a genius". I replied, "Why do you put him in such a tiny box?" He pondered for a moment and then nodded in agreement. Bach understood people and the human mind in a very profound way.
... but in the middle of these painful, stumbling feet of the Viola, listen to what happens from 3:30 and forward. There is an amazing ray of light that breaks in. This is what I think is the most significant with the Passion, rather than pain, the music is so full of light, hope, and comfort.
Kudos here also to the unnamed cellist whose lines are so central to the aria! She performs busy yeoman's work here that marvelously complements the 2 other soloists as she weaves in and out of the melodic lines of the bass and viola de gamba.
What a great piece of humanity and musical highlight. Excellent bass and extraordinary da gamba. Thanks so much for sharing! All the best from Germany --- one of your enthusiastic fans 🙂
Cheers to every musician participating in AoB. Each and every one have a great contribution in our culture and I daresay have set the bar for top performances and they set it **high**.
I really love this aria, ive admired it since first time i heard St. Matthew's Passion and this is absolutely one of my favorite moments from Netherlands' performance of the Passion
My favorite viola da gamba! The greatest Madame Mieneke in the world! And what a bass voice ❣️Heaven opens wide

Listen to the gamba melody. It has always made me see Jesus stumbling and struggling on his way to Golgotha. Very painful. Bach was beyond genius.

Fully agree my friend 👏🤗
So beautiful!
Thanks all of you. Powerful voice, wake us, please.
Wat een meeslepende versie, prachtige bas en een onovertreffelijke gambavertolking!

God, such a beautiful and free voice

Mieneke van der Velden speelt dit fantastisch op haar viola da gamba, één van de mooiste aria’s uit de Matheus Passion
What a beautiful and very spiritual performance. Many thanks.
Soli Deo gloria!
Respect voor de passie van deze muzikanten! ❤
Incrivel como é linda a viola da gamba!!!
Capolavoro immenso, perfezione assoluta e profondissima emozione
My favorite work.
Stille og noget vemodig musik og sang. Betænksomt og nydeligt.....
Uma virtuose na viola da gambá!
Such a sense of reverence ......
one of my favorite aria in SMP…i feel the weight of the Cross…
Geweldig mooi
I knew this instrument for the first time at age of 18years old.
Wonderfully played. I thought it was interesting that the double bass had frets on it.
Because it's a base from the family of viola da gamba
It's a #violone, not a modern double bass. 😉
👏👏👏
Subtitles in English? So much better, if you can understand what is being said.
There is Bach Cantatas website that has the original German and an English translation of most or all of Bach's vocal music. Free.
