Yesterday, I was proud to be able to paint parallel lines over a curved surface while respecting shadows and blends. It's not much, but it looked nice. Then Lucas comes along and earns his cookie with yet another grand masterpiece
Yes! More cookies for Lucas! I literally don’t even paint anything and this is one of my favorite channels on you tube! Thanks for getting me through my hard thirty minutes of cardio without noticing!
It's very interesting to see, how very different techniques can be. I love doing freehands, but i always start with rough shapes and slowly define them into what ever i want. And Lukas works almost completely the opposite way. Really fascinating to watch someone else do freehands in a completely different way to oneself.
Tattoo artist here of 20+ years and this video was right up my alley. Recently came back to the hobby and took a deep dive buying a bunch of black templars because my old 5,000 point army was stolen a long time ago. And the app i use is called procreate before Tattooing. My suggestion is be sure of what you are going to be freehanding and have a picture etc for reference. Also draw it out first before painting so your hands already know what to do. Muscle memory is always best! Love the channel!
As I studied illustration for 3 years and worked as a concept artist in the games industry for over 10 years, I know this video is not meant for a person like me, but you guys did a perfect job opening people up for this topic and you gave the right tools everyone needs to overcome the fear of trying freehands themselves. Great perfect video!
With drawing your guides, highly recommend a soft and more rounded lead. In America, B is the soft range, 2B, 3B etc being softer lead. They draw a darker line with less pressure. So you're not having risk damaging anything to get the line and it also means it'll erase easier.
Thanks for the knowledge. I've watched pretty much every freehand tutorial, and this one is top tier for its depth and breadth. Lukas deserves all the cookies.
Great video as always guys, thanks! I wanted to contribute with a tip which makes freehands easy which is very beginner friendly that you did not mention in the video. Use transfer/trace paper or just put a graphite on the back of the motive that you want to transfer, and then transfer it to the banner by tracing with a pencil on the other side. It works superwell! you need to print the motive in the size that you want, after doing that, just put graphite on the back side of it, just rub it all over, then transfer it to a grey/white banner.
All I have to do to be humbled about my painting skills is look up a single painting tutorial on UA-cam. Side note fan flipping tastic job Lucas! The art you create is beyond any description.
Another excellent video guys! Lucas provides some easy to follow instructions with great examples. Mustn’t forget the humorous interaction about Emil’s early freehand efforts, towards the end of the video. 😂😂😂
I sat down with about 10 minis and did nothing but practice eyes. It helped a lot. It's still challenging, but at least I kinda know what I'm doing now. :)
Great video guys. I suck at freehand, but this video makes me want to keep trying. Can you guys do a video tutorial on eyes next? They are so tiny, it’s a struggle
@@SquidmarMiniatures really? I’ll have to check that out. The eyes I’m doing at the moment are a bit smaller than GW models. I’m sure your vid will help.
I have never used grids in my life lol. I have always just drawn it as is and learnt that way. Even when I was a beginner many, may years ago. I have been drawing my entire life though at this point and I am 26. New to painting overall though
Great video guys. Proper painting stuff. Has something got mistranslated in English here? “Light pollution” is unwanted artificial light (e.g. especially at night so you can’t see the stars for example). The reduced contrast described here of far away objects is called “atmospheric perspective” and is caused by the atmosphere. Is this what you meant?
16:20- So I still have a lot of issues with this one!?! So let’s just say you are painting a trooper in the front but you want to paint another trooper that is giant in the background, what should I focus on? Because no matter how I do it, it always looks like it’s the same size troopers but I suck at understanding perspective!?!
I left some cookies in Lukas’ message requests inbox ;) great video as ever. Think I’ll go paint some diamond patterns on my harlequin now. I’ve put this off for 3 months now xD
To me feels very strange the way that Lukas has of painting the main figure: Instead of doing the simpler shapes all at the same time, and then add increasing level of detail to all of it until everything is completely done he focuses in specific parts until they are fully completed, and then move to the next part. I have heard painters and illustrators argue against that kind of approach, what is your opinion on it? The general shading bit is gold! Thanks a lot :)
You can see he blocked out some major parts in dark brown first and then worked on each part. I doubt there is a "right" answer here, it's up to the individual and their results.
@@cbjewelz yes, I saw it. But still I expected the sketch to progress at the same pace in every part of it. I saw that the approach of Lukas is similar to what many miniature paintings do with their minis: they focus in an area or color and keep working on it until it is done before moving on to other areas. I wonder if that is the reason why he approaches the sketch in a similar way
Tbh. When it comes to freehanding. Especially when it comes to armored vehicles, personal armor and the like. Keep in mind that its the joe that drives that tank that painted it. Which means it can be butt ugly. My first freehands were just numbers and the names for tanks. nearly every tank has a name in small letters on it. Especially if you are shit at drawing like me it will take some practice and time. Lots of time. Ima gonna say it again. Crooked handpainted numbers on a tank. Makes it come alive. Imo more so than the current clownpainting standards.
Amazing video, BUT that right foot is kinda weird. The foot anatomically could not be farther in the foreground than the knee. Am I missing something? :-)
your foot absolutely can be farther forward than your knee. watch someone walking towards you or coming down the stairs. that being said, 24:04, i think it looks a little weird on the banner because right where the knee is there is a concave curve in the banner that makes the knee disappear, which makes the foot look larger than it should be. that's not because the perspective is wrong, it's just unfortunate placement where the knee ended up on the banner.
Wow!!! That banner came out unbelievable!!! But I do have a few more questions…. When it comes to shading all those colors at one time, how do you do it? Because that’s not like 1 or 2 different colors in each flap! Because once you add in all the different shades of each color, a lot of those flaps are more like 25 to 30 different colors!?! And besides nuln oil (which ended up looking like trash the 3 or 4 times I tried it and gave up on it!!! And another question I have is, where did you get that banner from? That thing is huge!!! I’m pretty sure that thing is still 6 to 7 times bigger than the biggest Space Marine banner I’ve ever seen!!! Honestly, it’s soooo big that I wouldn’t have a hard time believing that it’s something sold on its own!?! And the last few questions, I think I just need to re watch this video when all my attention is available! One of my first and honestly one of my favorites so far was the double headed birdy going across the top and on both wings of one of my flyers!!! It came out so good….. I feel bad that I unfortunately need to strip it!?! Ugh
Wish I had this last week when I was attempting to freehand a cool insignia for one of my minis, ended up looking more like a badger turd than anything else

Try it mate, painting is awesome!
What kind of cardio?
Same for me. Well, without the cardio.😂
Looked to me like he was cookie neutral after all the -ve cookies.
As someone who will free hand two banners this video is much appreciated. Thank you.
Step 1 : objects far away are small. Step 2: objects close by are big . Step 3 : a perfect replica of a masterpiece 😁😁😁👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

The first freehand you showed in your intro was really good, because it was hard to tell what was actually freehanded.
Thanks so much for leaving the credits to Genzoman!!! He is a chilean artist!
The fastest I've ever seen one of your videos show up (26 seconds after upload).

Can I freehand? Nope. Did I watch the video anyway? Yep. I can’t even paint Space Marine eyes correctly😂there’s no hope
Correction, you can't freehand -yet-! It's just practise practise practise. Repetition builds confidence.

Hawt dayummm that Emperor freehand is amazing!
Got to see this live last weekend! Thank you for being awesome.
Beautiful work!
Fantastic tutorial my friends !

he said 15 years. come on now.
Hey guys! Just wanna mention that its called "atmospheric perspective", not light pollution when talking about art :)
Loving this series
That is amazing, I cant wait to try my first shoulderpad.

damn... wow.. Nice job Lucas!
Superbly explained, thank you Lucas !! ~~ I have a question about the the wet palette, what's better, tap water or Deionized water ?
The one thing I really wanna know is if it's actually allowed in the Imperium to show a picture of the Emperor himself or put him on a banner.
Perhaps it would be a good idea to put stamps in the video for each of the chapters. Thanks for the great content!
Woo! I'm excited for this! Maybe I can freehand a Little Smiley face on my Emperor Children. Haha
You should do a video in how you overcome painting obstacles when you are left handed.
why would there be obstacles being left handed? all the same rules apply.
The headline at 10:10 says "we are to begin" ;)
Or Wear to begin. 😉🤣🤦♂️
+1 for a Cookie Monster/Mona Lisa freehand on a warhammer mini somehow somewhere!!
First lesson: Draw two sticks to form a cross.
Second leason: Paint the Emperor of mankind.

The biggest problem with working that way is keeping everything proportional and in perspective.

he's using the grid method, so you complete each square of the grid as you go.

Have you painted the mirrored background of the banner?
Step 1, get good paints and a wet pallet, step 2, spend thousands of hours practicing and be an amazingly naturally talented artist. Easy.
Quality takes work
Yeah not everyone can do this, your a legit artist
