  • Part of hunting public land is running into other hunters… unfortunately, hunters make it harder on each other than it needs to be. Today I checked a couple of my prepped locations to find that one of my trail cameras was stolen and the other had its card and batteries taken. Gotta love public land hunting!

    I’m the guy leaving your cameras and stands alone. If I find a camera or setup ground blind or tree stand I leave that area and move on to the next spot

    I bring climbing sticks and mount my cameras 8-10' up in the tree. So far so good.

    Sorry that your equipment was stolen, even though you were in a remote location. Your neck of the woods gets some heavy hunting pressure. I avoid thievery by not using trail cameras and removing my stands after every hunt. It certainly limits the amount of intel I get and can be pretty tiring, depending on how far back I am, but this method generally avoids bad actors. I run into other people's cameras all the time and just note where they are and give them a wide berth. Wisconsin has some truly big deer and if you stick it out, you will get one. Good luck this fall.

      That’s a very good point. I have actually been debating not running cameras this season for a variety of reasons. Still haven’t made up my mind so I appreciate the insight. Good luck to you as well this season!

    I guess people are tired of spy equipment in public land you don’t own. They’re looking for shit like that.

      Valid point! Cameras are definitely a touchy topic these days. I have reduced my camera use over the last few years for a variety of reasons, that one included. However, I think a 5 megapixel camera in the middle of nowhere is the least of anyone’s privacy concerns lol

    My cameras on public land are in a box w/cable... trust nobody. Also use cameras that have a pin code, they might steal them, but their not going to use them. Also, I met a guy who had some trouble with this - he puts a second camera up high watching the first one, photos don't lie!!!

    • @hunteralmer
      @hunteralmer  3 місяці тому +2

      That’s a great idea, I have definitely thought about putting another camera watching the actual camera. Only thing with that is I usually set them up after dark and setting up one is hard enough lol. Might have to start locking them up!

    Bring a Python lock and a climbing stick to get up high and locked tightly it's the only defense

      Definitely going to from now on! I usually put all my cameras 8-10ft in the tree but this spot is so remote I wasn’t worried about it.

    • @davidtisch5237

      Both scenarios they cut the lock and chainsawed the tree to get my stand
      Some people just enjoy stealing free stuff in the woods
      Example public restrooms vandalized for no reason other than boredom

    • @AckBoater
      @AckBoater 3 місяці тому

      The bums will still steal it. Locks will only slow them down.

    I have more issues with other hunters than just people enjoying the woods. I’m not sure why they want to mess with the cameras but it’s a national issue not just your area.
    Use decoy cameras or place them much higher up in the trees.
    Not sure how invested you are in getting information about the wildlife but people are definitely on to your camera setups for sure
    My worst year 5 stands stolen and seven cheap trail cameras stolen one tree chainsawed down to get my tree stand

    • @hunteralmer
      @hunteralmer  3 місяці тому +1

      Yeah I think it is one guy in particular that is messing with my stuff at this location. Never had issues in this spot so I wasn’t too worried about it. Normally I put my cameras much higher up in the tree and hide them very well. The first one that was stolen off the tree was 10+ feet up. Used a climbing stick with an aider to set it up. Thankfully it was a cheaper camera. The second camera I set up in the dark with no light after hunting the spot so couldn’t hide it very well. More upset that I wasn’t able to pull intel off of it than loosing the camera. Definitely going to be putting more thought into camera placement moving forward. Can’t believe the lengths people will go through to steal stuff!

    Always use two cameras at each spot, camera #1 getting your deer pictures and camera #2 well hidden to watch camera #1.

    Something I have on video that had worked multiple times.... opposite to the acess door to the camera, I sharpee my name and phone number. On the side where the door opens, I write "Be Cool, Bro". Or "Don't be dick". 3x I've had guys approach my cam, Put theirs hands on it to open the door, then read those messages and leave it alone. I'm probably just lucky but it has worked. One dude even gave me the "hang loose" sign into the cam. Better than nothing I guess

    That's a bummer man. I've had several cameras and SD cards stolen over the years on public land. This past year was one of the worst. It's frustrating but don't let bad people keep you from doing what you love. They will reap what they sow. My advice is to keep your cameras high out of peoples line of sight, and put some sort of lock on every camera. Doesn't have to be anything fancy but most wont put the effort in if there is a lock on it. You got my sub. Looking forward to more. Keep it up!

    You won't have to worry about that much longer. State after state is banning cams for hunting. Yes cameras kill deer, not the camera itself but the info they give you you hunt your "target deer" lol. Good riddance to the cams. BOOT LEATHER

    • @hunteralmer
      @hunteralmer  3 місяці тому

      Yes for sure, it’s only a matter of time! Either way it doesn’t matter much, you can either put deer on your wall or photos! You choose😂

    Shorter windows of intel
    Pictures are cool and all but once you know a good buck is using an area hunt him down cameras can become a crutch and not a tool

    Do you know how you don't have things stolen on public land? take it with you when you leave. I live 40 miles from Milwaukee and our public land around here is littered with trail cameras and people willing to steal them. Would you leave your bow, gun, or wallet in the woods? Most people lock their vehicles while hunting because they are afraid somebody will steal something from it, but are perfectly fine leaving a hundred dollar or more camera in the woods, it just makes no sense to me. I'll be honest I am not a big fan of all of the cameras in the woods, but it bothers me more knowing I am sharing the woods with people who are willing to steal the cameras, given the choice between cameras in the woods or thieves in the woods I would choose cameras all day long.

    • @hunteralmer
      @hunteralmer  3 місяці тому +1

      Yes same here! I should’ve said more in the video but I am honestly more upset about not getting the photos than having my card and camera stolen. Anything left on public land is technically public domain. I also left my cameras out all year in this spot because I physically cannot access it due to high water most of the year. The other weird thing is that he/she tore down my licking branch and covered up my scrapes which makes me think it was another hunter. All part of the hunt I guess😂

    You are never going to see something on a game camera that you are not going to be able to see with some basic woodsman-ship skills.
    I know that is not a popular take but the reality is unless you are observing a "target buck" for more than one season returning to the same feeding, travel or bedding area after one season you are really not getting anything valuable from a game camera unless its a cell camera that is alerting you like an alarm system and you race out there to shoot an animal.
    Learn how to identify scat, tracks, scrapes, bedding lays, deer trails etc.
    I really think game cameras are just a consumer obsession in the hunting world that replaces woodsman-ship with a device that gives you next to no information other than that at one time or several times an animal has been there... The same information you can generally gather by simple observation... in the place you have to go to check the camera anyway...
    I remember a few years ago going out with a buddy of mine to check his game cameras in the summer and he literally walked right through a pile of bear scat, walked right past a sugar maple that was torn to shreds by a bear... to open up his game cam and say "WOAH there is a bear coming through!"

      @@1xayekim I agree game cameras will never beat time in the woods. However, with my current life situation I have extremely limited time to spend in the woods. I can’t afford to go sit a spot with hot sign for it to turn out to be a fork horn. Yes you can read sign to identify the age and the class of an animal but it does not always work that way. I use game cameras to save me very valuable time in the woods. I never use them as a “hunt alarm” either. If I could have it my way, I would be in the woods 24/7 scouting and finding sign but that is not that way it works. Also, I could not care less if someone were to hunt the same spots, check my cameras, etc. as that’s part of public land. I simply place a game camera to monitor traffic of wildlife in an area that I can’t personally be in. I also hunt all over my state and it would be impossible to be at every location all the time. My main issue was the information being stolen as I lost months of data. I do everything I can to find a good spot to hunt, then place a camera, not the other way around. The camera is and always will be the last step in the process and a tool to save me time, nothing more.

      @@hunteralmer To each their own.
      I personally hate trail cameras in public land with a passion. But I also hate access and methods of take being taken away from hunting more so I grudgingly support it but at the same its gotten out of hand in my state.
      I was scouting a spot in the spring and I came across a spot where I could count 9 game cameras on one deer trail. With obvious signs of tampering it was just a total shitshow.
      I hate the idea of hunters hanging stands weeks, months, years in advance and claiming spots more or less that is supposed to be for everyone but hanging stands and cameras is like calling shotgun in a car you wont be riding in for weeks.
      Also, in all seriousness when your game cameras are gone check the trail head trash cans or bins... Often cameras are not stolen they are just discarded. When I was working as a guide we would often find game cameras at trail head bins and at local hotels/camp grounds.

    • @hunteralmer
      @hunteralmer  3 місяці тому +2

      Yeah I somewhat agree with that as well. I think it’s headed that way already! However, I don’t like to see hunting rights taken away in any shape or fashion. Cameras today, scopes tomorrow, and so on. I think it is a dangerous game when we start willingly giving up certain things. I would like to see hunters slowly gravitate to different tactics on our own. I have cut my camera use in half over the last few years. Only reason I use cameras in this location is because I can’t access it for most of the year due to high water
