This makes a lot of sense if it was early on and electric motors were expensive and special. You have your one motor and it can do a bunch of things by itself, justifying the expense of one of those newfangled electric motors
I mean to be fair electric motors are still expensive and special, and having one attached to multiple functions would still save a hell of a lot of money

No, it was sold as a vacuum. Bissel is and always has been a sweeper/vacuum company. They never made a blacksmith blower. The impeller is metal and can withstand a lot of abuse. This was designed as a home vacuum anyway and would be used in a shop cleaning up hard materials.

Man it bugs me when people say this. Machines are an order of magnitude more reliable now than they were then. Adjusted for inflation they’re even often cheaper. Sure there’s a bunch of cheaply made trash…but that’s because a lot of people don’t want to pay 2x or 3x for higher quality.
I can not believe the amount of people in this comment section that are arguing this is not a vacuum... It took me a minute or so to do the slightest bit of research to find the original advertisement for this *VACUUM!!!!!!!!* Maybe y'all should give it a try before asserting your "dominance" so aggressively 😂
I wonder how long it lasted in the vacuum function as there's no filter. And I'm jealous where do you find these things a 1913 motor nice job restoring it regardless
👍 Made in 1913 but, yet still more versatile and practical than many common household tools and equipment today. You could probably run an old Jewelers lathe with that.
Honestly you could probably run most smaller lathes. Like obviously you couldn't go making plywood, or cranking out bowls by the dozen, but I'm sure you could easily use it on a small metal lathe to make small custom parts around the shop, like screws and whatnot.
@@connorhart7597 yes sir, my dad has a Jewelers lay that is ran by a belt with a very similar pulley system. I like the idea of having one like that but integrated with a new brushless motor.
And then corporations figured out “hey wait a minute! Why sell 1 tool with 3 functions when we could sell 3 tools with 1 function each? We could even sell those 3 each for the same price as the old one!”
run a hose extension on the bag end, have it sat somewhere near a multi pulley, put it on sliders so it can reach each pulley, run vacuum hose to an outside bag system or to a bin with an exhaust filter
I like how in the past things were simpler, more robust and were meant to do a lot of things for the same price. Today this thing would break after 6 months and you would need it to keep it updated to barely turning it on...
Reminds me of the thing sitting in the corner of Piderman's house that nobody knew anything about. Big Internet points to you if you also have neurons from here to there, talk about distant niches
The only thing I agree with is that they put it on wheels. 90% of consumer products should have wheels by default, while only 12% of the do. I threw those numbers off the top of my head but it is 100% accurate.
Kirby vacuums in the fifties had a grinder kit. This kind of thing wasn't that unusual. You bought a big motor, and people found other uses for it. The good ideas became official accessories.
Having the bag ontop like that doesn't make sense. I believe you either have it wired backwards or are missing a part because whatever is in that bad will just fall right back into the fan component the instant you turn it off and the bag will dump everything else on the ground when you take it off.
It’s not that far off from how there are now a billion cheap “adapters” to turn your drill into a table saw, rivet gun, or cheese grater. Except none of those adapters will work 100 years later, if they even last 6 months.
The pulley was not used to power other things it was how it was powered man we can get free clean energy with perpetual motion alone let alone using Nikola Tesla induction engine and batteries
Literally just an electric motor with a bunch of random features. It was probably more like buying a nice car with tons of features. I will give it credit though, the vibration is minimal for something that old on wheels.
I love how everything in this video is so wrong. I think people in 100 years are going to fix up an iPad and say “This is their primary computing device that they got all their work done on” when really it’s a couch computer or thing to make toddler shut up.
