When launching at 14°, you’re 2° stronger than the tour average and closer to the tour average for a 6i. All great for ball speed and more distance but you sacrifice your stopping ability on the green. You’re getting over 10 yards of rollout with a 7i which is not going to do anyone, any good. Only way this works is if you’re already a high speed/high spin player so that you still have the stopping lower on the green. With a 108 CS on a 7i and 8k backspin, I can afford to take spin off but most recreational golfers can’t If you’re already a guy who is closer to the average joe, you’re going to be rolling off the back of the green.
In all fairness to Ali his message is to the wider world and not necessarily directed toward the scratch or better than scratch golfer. But, even here, it reinforces just how valuable it is to swing within yourself and to compress the ball. Don´t get caught up and distraced by the 10 yds of rollout... remember these were casually hit shots as he talked his way through and where the club face was often slightly closed. I think he´s done an excellent job on getting the concept across.
@@briantierney4703 I think we both agree that a solid, controlled swing will play better than an out of control faster swing. However, what you said reinforces why the average golfer shouldn’t want to take this approach to gain more distance with their irons. Less loft equals less height and less spin, two things most golfers already don’t have enough of on approach shots. He’s a teaching professional so the average golfer who attempts this is going to get more rollout off the back side of the green. Stopping power on the greens is important. Hopefully our differing views can help bring to light the pros and cons for those attempting or considering this. Cheers! 🥂

I just wanted to say that the videos you have done recently on swing tempo and slowing down and better ball striking are some of the best teaching videos I've watched on youtube. I appreciate your clarity in teaching a concept.
I am confused. Essentially, you took the loft off the club by moving the shaft forward. The loft and shaft length is what differentiates the clubs. If you're swinging a 7i but delofting it down to 5i then of course you'd carry further and smash factor would be higher. You're squatting more to compensate for the shorter shaft on the 7i. Why not hit with the lower loft iron, 5i or 4i? Am I missing something here?
Because you're changing it for every iron across the board. I think most people including myself are actually hitting their 5i with the proper loft of a 7i. Not getting the proper distance and therefore trying to swing harder. Which possibly just introduces more backspin. He's teaching us how to get proper distances with our irons without having to muscle up but actually just swing with a better launch angle.
I'm in the same boat as you Ivo, and I disagree with Nicholas' response. He wasn't showing you how to deloft an overly lofted swing.. he was showing you how to deloft an ordinary swing by modifying it.. you would achieve the same thing by simply swinging slower with iron with less loft. Unless I'm missing something here, I think this video is poor advice, for newer players I would focus on swing consistency and changing clubs based on the needs of the shot rather than advanced swing modifications to deloft shots, unless you are a pro, in which case this video isn't relevant to you.
It’s not that I want to slow my swing. I’m 66 now and because of injuries my swing has slowed down to a maximum of 80 mph. I’m learning now how to compress the ball and increase my smash factor. My smash factor is up to 1.45 and my distance is 160 with my 7 iron. Thank you
Was eager to try this at the range today because I’ve been hitting a weak fade with all of my clubs the last month or so. I actually thought I was losing distance due to my age. This truly did help with contact and hence distance. I was hitting a pulled draw shot early which I’ve been known to do. Yet, I was able to straighten out. I also didn’t get near as tired. I wanted to keep hitting balls. Gonna rush to range again tomorrow and next few days in preparation for a round with some coworkers next week. I’m very excited. I’ve tried other tips from videos to shallow out the club but something about this teaching related to me. Thx for the teaching
So it appears this technique delofts the club. The launch angle drops 8 degrees between the early and final shots. So will these shots then behave like a shots off a longer iron? And if so, why not just pull out a longer iron? At 15.7 degrees, it's not very far above the launch angle of a driver. Will the ball still hold the green with these trajectories? I didn't see any spin rate data for the two different techniques.
This is a good topic. I was just fittes for irons and with a 7 iron, i have a 100-102 mph swing speed with very little effort. However, ball striking is inconsistent. So this gives me something to work on in terms of slowing the speed to gain control.
Great video! I am struggling with that same thing. I’m a fairly consistent ball striker but I’ve lost about a full club of distance in my irons since last year. Ball flight went from penetrating mid height to to high and soft. I swing a 34* 7 iron comfortably 86-88 mph but only hitting it about 160. Curious what was your spin, height and decent angle was on some of those 180 yd + 7 irons?
@@thewelsho Exactly and I had been clubbing up before I figured out the distance loss. The issue was the distance loss was only with my irons and caused about a 30 yd gap between my longest iron (4) and my 21* hybrid. A quick checkup from my local pro showed me that my grip had gotten a weak and was causing me to leave the face open on the downswing and flip to square it at impact. A little tweak to my grip kept my face square to slightly closed during my swing and reduced dynamic loft at impact 4* - 5* and viola…spin launch and peak height came down and ball speed and distance came back up to where I’m used to seeing it. Crazy how subtle changes can make such a big difference
If the target is 200 yards and if your normal swing of 5 iron can get this yardage, what is the need of using 7 iron to get 200 iron. If we are allowed to play all holes just with two clubs then this makes sense. One can cover up to 450 yard holes in two strokes and one or 2 putts. Golf will be simpler. I should try this and carry just two clubs in my league to have more fun.
Ali, I really enjoy your teaching & I've watched many of your videos. I have successfully put some of your methods into practice. I want to ask, why is your 7i de-lofted? Why not just use a 5i or 6i? And are all your clubs de-lofted? Jeff
Futhur.. as in a Grateful Dead Jam.. never more confused. Jack said he tried to mimic the slow takeaway.. he had.. and have the first move down.. be equally as slow. That’s how all the speed would be at impact and not the “spasm” on the first move down. 😊
I'm 27 years old and yesterday i tried a new driver and it was the first time I saw my club head speed and it was only 77 mph! I feel like thats like way way too slow especially for my age. Was it cause I was using a new driver? Maybe I was holding back cause I was in an indoor bay? Where can I find something to track my speed.
love the video!ive studied shaft lean wrist angle my conclusion is simple…not closing the face turn the left hand in alittle fading to much open it a bit!simple but works gotta be fluid on the course according to your swing that day!!!we never swing the same everyday!key to winners is the adaptation to there swing that day!
It’s hard to get used to turning the wrists during the backswing. I tried and yes it works but it’s super uncomfortable and eventually went back to my old swing. Too much thought trying to remember to turn the wrists
Maybe you can shed some light on this for me: according to indoor driving range, similar to the set up you have there, I hit the ball 20 yards farther than I ever have on a golf course? For example, I hit a 5-iron on average 185 yards carry, 200 yards total roll on an indoor range (I'm 63 years old, 9 handicap). On an actual golf course, I have never hit a 5 iron more than 180 yards to include roll out. Another example, a few years ago I was fitted for irons on an indoor machine. The result was a stiff (S300) dynamic gold shaft because I hit it farther (10 yards) than any other shaft tested. I tested the full gamut of shafts from L, A, R and S flexes, steel and graphite. I had clubs built with that shaft and lost 10 yards on the actual golf course versus my old regular flex shafts.......Do these machines lie to us??????
Maybe im missing something but comparing the launch angle and roll out between the before and after swings, wouldnt this technique make it harder to stop the ball on the green? it'd be interesting to see the spin numbers between the two shot types

Instead of changing your existing swing and delofting your irons, what about simply keeping the swing you've already grooved and take one more club while swinging smoothly?
I would think this could be positive for anyone with a slower swing speed looking for more distance including seniors who have lost a measureable amount of it from age and the usual nicks and knocks they have taken over the years. I'm going to give this a try.
I like your content because there a lot of golfs that feel they swing to fast. I will play the devils advocate here. Your playing a stronger seven iron like most pros do. I would say your 6’-2” which will add more distance because of your arch of the club. You hit the sweet spot every time most of us don’t. When you slow your club speed you have to be careful not to decelerate to much or you will chunk the ball. That being said, I loved your video!
As part of my swing I forward press with my hands as the first move in my swing, then make sure on my take away I do NOT "roll" the hands. That little forward press at the beginning solved the exact issue I had with the ole hosel rocket/cupped wrist miss hits. And I hit it SO much cleaner and straighter. I am sure it won't work for everyone, but for me that forward press solved SO many issues with my irons and my driver.
@@owenrivard8832 that was the same for me with the driver. If you tee it higher, just in line with the left heel and add a little tilt-angle to your spine, you will hit up on the ball much easier, and it will go higher and further.
But that’s not what happens between the ears once you take the club back😂. I’ve been golfing over 55 yrs and it Still creeps in between the ears. I golf with a bunch of buddies and they usually say my swing is smooth but to me it feels far from it lol. Just gotta trust the slower pace I guess.
I'm confused, if you are taking loft off of the ball to get greater distance, why not just use a club that has left loft instead of modifying your swing?
What bloody club are you hitting? That would help us a lot. Blimey, I don't even hit my driver 160 yds but I'm 76 years old and have a good golf swing and have been playing 66 yrs and taking lessons for 64 yrs, from pros! Please help me! ! ! ! !
Try hitting your clubs 3/4 of the distance you normally do but still with a full swing. THAT will smooth your swing & you'll make good contact from the center of the face more often. You'll be surprised by the tempo it gives you & even better distance just by hitting the center of the face. Try it for a whole bucket of practice balls & give it a chance rather than quitting after a few bad shots. It's a little harder than it sounds. Let the club swing rather than pulling it down from the top. IMO, the 1 thing that's rarely mentioned by teachers but 1 of the most important factors in the swing is grip pressure. For speed in the swing, you can't have tension in your hands, wrists & arms which doesn't allow the full weight of the club to go thru the ball thus reducing speed. They call it a golf "swing" for a reason. Relax & let the club swing freely rather than trying to control it.
That's what i try telling my buddies when we're on the course. "dont try and kill it, just let the club come down naturally" and then that advice goes right out of the window cause they still try and kill it 😂. Then they see me go up to the tee and hit a gorgeous shot and all i hear is "how did you do that??" lol I JUST TOLD YOU GUYS. Like we wouldnt have to spend so much damn time looking for your balls in the rough if you'd just listen ffs 😂
Because like i said they always ask "how do you do that?!?" when i literally just told them and SHOWED THEM how to do it. The proof is in my actions lol.
The main problem US armatures make - is trying to square the club head back to it's starting position, so why change direction/s of the hands throughout the swing? Why not just keep the back of the logo on ones glove (right handed golfers) pointing towards the ground through out the whole swing (which I will try out tomorrow) Surely with less moving parts of the bodies limbs will help to get the club head to ball square and easier! I look forward to trying this out and maybe some feed back from others if they have tried out my theory? Thanks Ali!

And if so, why not just pull out a longer iron? At 15.7 degrees, it's not very far above the launch angle of a driver. Will the ball still hold the green with these trajectories? I didn't see any spin rate data for the two different techniques.
I want to see all angles with slow motion would be plus!

Was thinking the exact same thing irons aren't for distance but accuracy and control. Key is the spin rate.
"Only" 160. If you can carry that distance every time consistently, then you're doing very well! Need to go 170 or 180? Use a 6 iron :)
Hey mate, why don't you try to make swinging a golf club more complicated with even more BS! GIVEMEAFRINGINBREAK1
Oh god......people sure know how to make the golf swing complicated. No wonder there are more golf instructors than lawyers
The mixed garlic critically launch because radiator connolly detect except a lumpy spleen. frantic, inquisitive vietnam

How do you prevent hitting the ball massively left, or non-lofted shots when you close the club face that much?
Good lesson. Howeer, I found it quite hard to trying to bowl the wrist on the way down. Any tip on how best to keep the wrist flat/bowled?
The correct word is FARTHER. Further refers to movement not associated with distance.
He's talking about supinating your left wrist. Ben Hogan mentioned this in his book Five Lessons.
Can I get that analyzer to follow me around the golf course and give me statistics of each shot?
Your head is almost Looking to see the ball flight BEFORE you have hit the ball ?
Instead of changing your existing swing and delofting your irons, what about simply keeping the swing you've already grooved and take one more club while swinging smoothly?
Just an excellent lesson...The key is to start out VERY slowly to feel the positions then gradually add the speed. Great drill....👍
Thank you
I would think this could be positive for anyone with a slower swing speed looking for more distance including seniors who have lost a measureable amount of it from age and the usual
nicks and knocks they have taken over the years. I'm going to give this a try.
Why not just switch to the 6 iron, rather than making those changes to you swing?
SO LIKE THE METALWORKER LEARNS MORE ABOUT THE SHAFT AND DISCONNECTS THE IMPACT EFFORT IN MORE TIME FOR THE CLUB HEAD TO GREET THE BALL
What type of club are you hitting with. Taylormade 7 iron?
Isn't this technique a simple case of closing the face of the club? Just a thought
Lunch Angle in fact went from 23 to 14 - it’s like hitting a 5 iron with a shorter Shaft
This feels like what I do when I attempt to play a punch shot. Is that what this is, basically?
"how to make your 7i act like a 6i by fucking with your swing"
I like your content because there a lot of golfs that feel they swing to fast. I will play the devils advocate here. Your playing a stronger seven iron like most pros do. I would say your 6’-2” which will add more distance because of your arch of the club. You hit the sweet spot every time most of us don’t. When you slow your club speed you have to be careful not to decelerate to much or you will chunk the ball. That being said, I loved your video!
Thanks for the simple tips. I gain speed and consistency tremendously.
Exact same for me except doesn't work for driver
You are right, my mate has that forward press and it works well for him, but not me. I use it and I will hit the ground first. Cheers
@@owenrivard8832 that was the same for me with the driver. If you tee it higher, just in line with the left heel and add a little tilt-angle to your spine, you will hit up on the ball much easier, and it will go higher and further.
@@thewelsho I’ll try lining up with the heel I def tend to stand too far away with tilt from the ball with driver so that might help me not top it
Your videos are always very innovative. Your demonstration shots always prove your point. Very interesting and creative video. Thanks
Julius Boros wrote a book in the ‘60’s … “Swing Easy, Hit Hard”
But that’s not what happens between the ears once you take the club back😂. I’ve been golfing over 55 yrs and it Still creeps in between the ears. I golf with a bunch of buddies and they usually say my swing is smooth but to me it feels far from it lol. Just gotta trust the slower pace I guess.
Julius was a 6 foot tall 200 pound beast swinging easy for him made his golf ball go miles 😆
Shouldn't your launch angle be around 22-24 degrees? 15-18 degrees is coming in HOT!
Depends on your clubhead speed, around 17 deg is optimal for me
Dose the same rule apply to the driver swing ?
I'm confused, if you are taking loft off of the ball to get greater distance, why not just use a club that has left loft instead of modifying your swing?
This move will also help strike and control the club face better
How would you get more spin on these shots? Noticed that the ball runs out a bit
Relax & let the club swing freely rather than trying to control it.
why do people click the dislike button? must be jealousy and insecurity
I hope so 😂😂
Excellent video! Thanks!
But hit the ball better...should you say 😊
Thanks Ali!
A slomo would be useful. Good session though
