One evening fair as I took the air Down by Blackwaterside O 'twas there a gazing all around That Irish lad I spied All through the far part of the night We rolled in sport and play This young man rose And he gathered his clothes Saying "Fare thee well the day" That's not the promise you gave to me When first you lay on my breast O you could made me believe With your lying tongue That the sun rose in the west Go home, go home to your fathers keep Go home and weep your fill Think upon your own misfortune By your wanton will There's not a girl in this wide world So easily led as I Sure the fish will fly And the seas run dry And it's then he'll marry I There's many a star shall shine in the west As many a leaf below Many a damn shall light upon man For serving a poor girl so
This makes Fairport sound positively nothing. Of course it was Fairport Convention/Sandy Denny who began this kind of transformation of folk into psych/progressive rock, but Mandy Morton is even better than Sandy Denny which is really saying something! I wonder where Mandy is now and if she'll ever bring us some beautiful new sounds our way in the future. I'd love to meet her.
Last I heard, she was a "presenter" for BBC Radio in Cambridge. I don't know if that's a DJ or Newsreader or what, but that was some time ago, so maybe not any more.
Wonderfull ..
my favourite track from 'time will pass' album.
great song
Sad but beauty.
One evening fair as I took the air
Down by Blackwaterside
O 'twas there a gazing all around
That Irish lad I spied
All through the far part of the night
We rolled in sport and play
This young man rose
And he gathered his clothes
Saying "Fare thee well the day"
That's not the promise you gave to me
When first you lay on my breast
O you could made me believe
With your lying tongue
That the sun rose in the west
Go home, go home to your fathers keep
Go home and weep your fill
Think upon your own misfortune
By your wanton will
There's not a girl in this wide world
So easily led as I
Sure the fish will fly
And the seas run dry
And it's then he'll marry I
There's many a star
shall shine in the west
As many a leaf below
Many a damn shall light upon man
For serving a poor girl so
Though I have 3 releases by them. I like " Time Will Pass" the best.
