How do I later erase those reference points?

Right click on empty space, select "Add/Modify Grids", then select the associated grid system (there is usually just a few, so trial and error should suffice) and click "show/modify grid", finally, in the window that pops up, on the upper right corner there are two buttons to access the list of reference points and reference grids, where you can add, modify or delete them.
