Such a good VP song, and yes, a very defining moment I am sure. I love Tony in this one and he is such an iconic Phantom in my mind solely because of this song. It is such an under-reacted song because of how old it is but really should have more love.
My daughter’s high school was 1 of the first high schools to perform Phantom. Andrew Lloyd Weber came to the school, talked to the kids and told them stories. It was amazing.
I have been told to yell “Mortius where’s the OG Linnnnnnk!?” Kidding man this was a great reaction crazy how far they have come and still sticking to their roots at the same time
I think Phantom was absolutely a "defining departure" that pulled me in to the VP rabbit hole, so glad you enjoyed it!! Love to hear your take on it all
Old VoicePlay blowing Mortius' mind just as well as VoicePlay does with their new stuff - that never gets old 😉 - and Mortius when realizing that Tony is in the video might be my new favorite "Mortius-mind blown" moment 😆
Yeah, it's always funny to hear Tony say it's a departure to 'indugle the theatrics' knowing where they ended up 🤣 But I agree with you that this was kind of their first step into that, and I'm so glad it was succesfull enough to encourage them in that direction! They did get some hate for the departure from the original, but as someone who is pretty attached to Phantom, I think this cover is MUCH more successful than The Greatest Showman Medley was at doing it's own thing without loosing what makes the original work.
Each time I come back to this video, I am impressed all over again with how they managed to capture the sexy and menacing tones of the song with their imagery. Like the whole video you are walking a knife edge between is this a seduction, or a threat.
As someone VERY MUCH attached to Phantom (it's my husband's favorite, we've seen it 3 times since getting married, and I knew some of the pit musicians when it was at the Pantages in the 90s) I loved this remix. This was definitely their FIRST STEP toward what VoicePlay would become, their "baptism" into theatrics and costumes that now defines them.
I do think that you are right that this was... kind of their Rubicon, which set them down the path of the more theatric pieces. I wouldn't be surprised if this was a big part of what set them on the road to creating Pattycake Productions. Especially since Tony co-owns it with Layne. Anyway, while the lineup including Tony wasn't the "current" lineup that was in place when I started following them, I started early enough in JNone's time with them that he was still... comparatively speaking, their "new" full-time member, so in looking back over their library, I still kind of thought of Tony as one of the "originals." Still, it is amazing how much of a staple J became in the years following that. He might not have been my #1 favorite member, but I do appreciate and respect him, and what he brought to the group, though.
I have a Huge connection to Phantom, and Love it deeply. I first heard this and was taken aback due to my expectations. HOWEVER, the second time i listened I was drawn in because I knew it was not "my phantom" and was able to appreciate everything so much more. I love this version so very much.
Absolutely agree with your initial reaction. As someone who has loved musical theater since the age of five when I first heard my parents' original cast recordings of My Fair Lady, Camelot (which they actually got to see with the original cast), and West Side Story, this video and their "If I Were a Rich Man" videos were ones which I was really hyped to watch after first discovering VoicePlay. And both of them are so radically different from what I was expecting that I immediately clicked off of the videos and thought, "They're not doing it right!". However, I eventually managed to return and watch them all the way through and was able to appreciate that they were succeeding in doing something very different with their interpretation of the songs. That being said, I have to confess that while "Rich Man" eventually won a place in my VoicePlay audio playlist, "Phantom" never did. I love the Tony's and Rachel's performances enough, along with some of the video/lighting choices to occasionally watch the video, but the audio by itself is just not something I want to hear on a regular basis. (Although, I just happened to think that if somehow the original cast version were to be forever lost, and I had to choose between listening to this or the move soundtrack, as the only version to be preserved, I would certainly go with this one 😉)
How on earth did the universe arrange itself to where my music appreciation class discussed the Phantom of the Opera play, I got to recommend voiceplay's cover to my teacher just yesterday, and you release your reaction the very next day? 😃 Love your surprise and confusion at seeing Tony. I believe Tony appeared in their song 'just sing' around covid time.
Mason is correct in that The Greatest Showman was the last full length video she was in with them, however, technically, the last video she did with them was the Thanksgiving Song mini. ❤😉
I doubt that just being pregnant would have stopped Rachel from featuring with the guys. (She’s been pregnant in at least two previous videos.) But when you add in her knee injury s couple months ago, I’m sure she’s sticking close to home right now. Are you aware that Tony made Rachel’s dress for this video? As he did for Greatest Showman. His mother and grandmother were both seamstresses, and he took an early interest in costuming. He does almost all the costumes for Pattycake and many for VoicePlay.
Thanks for the info! I knew Tony made her dress here, but not about his mom and grandma. Rachel is pregnant in Kidnap the Sandy Claws and which other one?
I really enjoyed this take, especially in the production. It's more menacing indeed. She's very much a victim, and i think it harkens back to the book a bit more than to the show. The book is a lot creepier..:)
I love Phantom and I love this cover even more. Rachel is in the process of producing another human being for her family, so unfortunately, I don't think we'll be getting a collab anytime soon. And you are spot on about this video being the defining moment that gave us the theatre kids of a cappella.
From this and other of ;your VP reactions, I've learned appreciation for your "favorite thing". The spot in this song where it happens also contains 2 of my favorite things - key changes and suspended chords. Goosebumps squared.
I really love Phantom, and have since I was like a tween, and I was a little iffy about this remix at first but the more I listened to the more I loved it. Mortius is definitely right about that and that there are parts that is so creepy and stunning
Good stuff! I found their EP the other day when they were called 4:2Five, and I’m so excited the CD still works! It’s almost 20 years old, which is insane.
This was the first song of voiceplay’s I’ve heard, and I was hooked. SO SO SO GOOD. what a perfect gift for my birthday month. Love your reactions as alway! :)
Awesome reaction as always Mortius. Hi Mason 🙋♀️ I didn't like Phantom of The Opera until this one. They have a talent for doing that. Turning non like songs into one of my favorites. Voiceplay released their new video on Patreon Sunday. It is bad a**. Apocalyptic time again.
I’m a big fan of Phantom. The first time I heard this I was a little shaken by the differences; I’ve listened to the original so many times that I no longer need to hear the recorded version-I can hear it in my head. It took me a minute to get used to the movie as well-initially I missed Michael Crawford’s voice, and Butler’s was more rock/rough. But it didn’t take long for me to be over the difference-and develop a little crush on Butler. LOL. Anyway, the differences here didn’t bother me that much on second listen, especially since Tony’s voice is absolutely gorgeous, and so is Rachels-both of them could legitimately play the leads in the musical.
This one reminds me how much I love and miss Tony's voice. (No shade on their baritones since -- they're all awesome.) I think this was the beginning of the end for Tony touring with VP and instead going strictly behind the camera, co-founding PattyCake with Layne. I keep hoping they'll do a collaboration with him. I mean, he's *right there* and he still sounds awesome when he sings in Pattycake originals, like Quarantine: The Musical.
I felt the same way about their Greatest Showman arrangement, but this was amazing and I'm really attached to Phantom of the Opera like you are to Greatest Showman.
I absolutely love phantom of the opera ! And yes they changed a lot but I think they kept enough essence of it. And I love their version. Not as much as the original but both are amazing
In the background, when tony is talking, there is some kind of remix version playing, I would love to know where to find that and if its fully developed.
I kind of like your sneaky patrons not giving you a heads up. It's more fun this way. All of it was wonderful, of course, but Tony, WOW. That powerful baritone just doesn't come out in the standard acapella world. I'm so glad he's still part of the family through Pattycake.
Loved your reaction! I ALWAYS get the chills when you dropped under your desk - so I can relax now: It's not only me that is knocked hard by this vocal "situation"... 😅 Love Tony's help with creating awsome fantastic hilarious videos: In the hall of the mountain king, Nothing else matters, Golden hour and many many more... 🎉❤
Rachel hits an E6 at the end, rather than the A6 it's originally written as (no shade whatsoever, E6 is ridiculously high and she hits it flawlessly), and I've always wondered if they lowered the key to accommodate the guys
one of my favorite reactions for sure!! i vibe with the emotions in this one. this is one of my favorite songs of this era and you gave it its due justice, so thanks!
I think this is the first time I saw Voiceplay, and I only watched for about a minute, because I'm a Phan who saw Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman in POTO. I didn't get it. Didn't understand A Cappella. But once I'd seen some other Voiceplay ("This Is Halloween" is the first full video I watched and it got me into them) I came back to this and love it!
It''s on my top 10 list for VoicePlay. I came onto it early in the VoicePlay list and I love it. Can't believe you hadn't done this yet. I am attached - every version I've heard hit my soul. This is gorgeous.
Thank you Mortius for another wonderful, and very entertaining reaction. I love it when Tony appears, and you are like...."ooohhh it's THAT old" LOL. as many times as I have seen this one, that ending still gives me chills.

Yeah, I saw an interview at one point, wherein they talked about how they saw themselves as a group back then, defined in terms of their theatrical stuff like Road Trip and Auditions and the Chicken Song (skits with singing in them, basically), and how when they were on the Sing-Off, they had difficulty figuring out how to turn that into the 3-4 minute pop songs the show runners wanted. To me, that explains why their performance on the show was so underwhelming, and why they got voted off the island. They hadn't done Phantom yet; it came later, after the show was over and done, and yeah, it feels *way* more similar to the stuff they do now, than anything else they had done up to that point. Lest I overstate my case, they had done some limited before. They did that Zombies vs Hillbillies collab with HF. They dressed for dinner and sat around a table singing Be Our Guest. Maybe the most modern-VP thing they'd done, before Phantom, was Cheerleader, which they did in workout clothes around exercise equipment. But Phantom took it to another level, in terms of the arrangement, as well as the video, and yes, I think it definitely helped set them on their course to where they are now. It's not hard to believe that their Phantom and Valhalla Calling videos, for example, were done by basically the same group, membership changes notwithstanding. It fits the profile. Though they did have to replace that short-haired bass singer with somebody who can actually hit low notes :-)
I've been waiting for you to do this one I knew it would be a good one. It has to be my favourite OG @VoicePlay song ever Tony just shone in this. It always gives me goosebumps.
That’s one I saw and loved before I started doing reactions, so it would unfortunately not be possible to do a true reaction. Might do an analysis for Halloween this year though!
I know you like standing, but you might want to have a stoll/chair or something you can collapse onto instead of the floor. We don't want you to hurt yourself. I've always loved Phantom, I've heard it done by so many different people that try to replicate the original, but dont have the singers to hit the high notes, mostly tenors, so they change the key for the ending and butcher the song. I like that VP made it their own.
Actually, it was the *producers* of The Sing-Off that wanted VoicePlay with her. VoicePlay wanted to be on the show as themselves. Rachel declined as she was going on The X-Factor. The producers insisted VoicePlay have a female, so they asked their friend Honey to help them out.
I'm glad you weren't warned as the unprepared Mortius is the most entertaining Mortius! ;)
Have to agree!!
That's exactly why they didn't warn him, I reckon. :)
Such a good VP song, and yes, a very defining moment I am sure. I love Tony in this one and he is such an iconic Phantom in my mind solely because of this song. It is such an under-reacted song because of how old it is but really should have more love.

This is honestly my top 3 favorites from them… the EDM bass and drum work, the drama (Tony!), the high notes, the video concept are all 🔥🔥🔥
Phantom is just goosebump inducing. The vocals are beautiful and the guys are somewhat menacing as they circle Rachael.
somewhat? First time I saw it I thought it was terrifying.
@@Aurora-cv5to I am creeped out every time I watch this one. The vocals are fantastic, though.
Maybe just me but I always kinda wanted to be in the midst of that circle of extremely handsome talent… 🤭
Definitely not just you. They could be creepy, menacing, I don't care - what a fantasy to stand in the midst of all that...talent and chemistry.
I think Phantom was absolutely a "defining departure" that pulled me in to the VP rabbit hole, so glad you enjoyed it!! Love to hear your take on it all

The vibe of circling sharks, or stalking cats, slowly closing in on her.
