VERY SAD. I applied every chance i got for a posting onto Lightnings.....never made it :((((( Makes me SO angry they ploughed up this base for what?? More fields to grow GRASS? Theres already enough farmers fields in Lincolnshire, this would have made a wonderful 'cold war' museum for fly ins, air displays, all the preserved Lightnings and the cold war aircraft that are now trapped at Bruntingthorpe. The new owners have decided they dont want anymore taxi runs there so thats the end of that. They have also dumped thOusands of cars on the runway that they cant sell ! LIVID!!
Did some touch down down /aborted landings there when I was an air cadet flying from finningley. It was the RAF base for the fire fighting training, I can remember a row of lightnings in various states of
This must have been JUST after closure. The base looks so intact with even the grass cut and the lights working. OMG, so bitter-sweet.
