Yes, you can, but there are terms and conditions for that. You have to maintain your F1 visa status during that time. Make sure that you have been admitted to a university and have received a new Form I-20 from the university's DSO. You can do an OPT which is a Pre-Completion OPT(could be an internship related to your major) during that one year. BEFORE that, you should/must discuss with. your DSO(international student manager/coordinator). I hope this helps a bit more than before. Let me know if it's not clear.
