Totally share your thoughts about this lens. I bought it last year thinking it can be practical when needed... On a trip i broke my 16-80 so all i had in my bag was this zoom a 33mm 1.4 . and a 50mm. Of course i missed the wide end of my 16-80 but it forced me to think differently and i really had a nice surprise shooting with this lens for landscape and streets as well. It's always in my bag now.
Hell yeah! This is my favorite lens! If I had to sell all but one lens, I’d keep this one. Great reach, great magnification (for macro) small and light.
@@ChrisFreitag No I mean it can magnify a lot all on its own. Not 1:1 macro, but I’ve used it to photograph mushrooms. It “focuses close” as most people say.
I had the 55-200mm which was good but easily surpassed by this. Like you, I grab this and a small wider prime for unplanned shoots. You just adopt a different mindset with each focal length. I have the x1.4 teleconverter which works very well even at a full 300mm (420) with some expected softening comparably but today's software can mitigate this. I had the 100-400 but sold it for the 150-600 which is also great. Best wishes.
Hi Chris, I'm glad to see your review, thank you! I have the lens too. It was supposed to replace the old XC 50-230, whose quality is amazing for XC, by the way, and it was also supposed to replace my 100-400, which is often too big and heavy for me. So two birds with one stone... I agree with you, the 70-300 is excellent (only the zoom ring is a little stiff). You mentioned it - I also miss the 50mm range, which often forces me to take a second lens with me. That's why I can't part with the 50-230 and use it every now and then, as a supplement, I take the small but great GRIII with me. Greetings from Hannover, Germany! Udo
I’ve always thought of buying this lens as its compact for street architecture and landscape photography but I already own the xf100-400mm which is big
Well in my case I had that 50-140 people rave about but I wasn’t willing to keep it just because people love it. I never used it because it was so heavy.

I honestly thought I was getting it just to have it for those just-in-case moments in the mountains. Was not expecting a workhorse lens.

What do you mean by macro? Like one of the adapters?

@just_eirik gotcha!
I love this lens together with my 10-24mm 😊
Big gap between 24 and 70. Do you use primes in that space?
@@ChrisFreitag I use also 33mm & 56mm 😉
I have one and enjoy it as well. I know you can put the teleconverter on it, and would very much like to have one of those eventually.
I’ve not tried that either, I wonder how well that works…

I might give that teleconverter a try, you’re the second person to mention it.

I bet this pairs well with the 18-135mm.
Yeah, I had that same thought.
