    When I got back into knitting 4 years ago, I was attracted to colorful yarns and patterns, same with quilting. I don’t think that was a bad thing, maybe it helped to keep me going, but now, I see gaps in my sweater wardrobe. I’m knitting more neutral yarns now.😊 One great tip is to start out knitting a child’s sweater. You finish it much quicker, learn any new skills, and have instant gratification.

    You can get cable extenders to screw your interchangeable cables together, so you can just add an extra cable, put on the stoppers and then try the garment on without having to remove the working cable.

    These are very ambitious projects for a newbie --cables and colorwork -- and you've done them well. Kudos to you!

    I absolutely love my interchangeable needles set. It felt like a huge spend when I'd only just started to knit but it's so handy and flexible, and they definitely work out cheaper in the long run.

    Love this video. Well-thought out and engaging. I've been knitting since 2017 and wish I had seen this video when I was starting out. Even now I still have to remind myself of these tips, especially to fix mistakes when they happen. I just had to completely frog a sweater because my tension was so off and I should have corrected it from the start. But you live and you learn!

    Wow the child’s cable sweater, very pretty. I’ve been knitting for 18 yrs and haven’t knitted a full cable sweater. You’re doing great for a new knitter. BTW only you can see mistakes , consider them works of art in the work!
    Good tip about choosing patterns .I always read the comments on Raverly patterns. and UA-cam is great for knitting help. I leave my gage swatches attached to ball even when blocking afterwards I just undo it and knit with it. Funny, I live 25 minutes away from you. Looking forward to more of your podcasts

    I think yarn combinations that don't work always because some people do not have the ability to purchase yarn they feel first, but order online. I do dot live near any yarn stores and have ordered yarns that I later learned I can't wear on skin easily. Sizing I believe comes down to watching and measuring yourself correctly.

    • @saskia_makes
      @saskia_makes  6 місяців тому

      Agreed! I’ve mostly played it really safe with my yarn combinations since I tend to order online often. Sizing is hard, and I totally agree that measuring correctly is a big help!

      I’m glad you found it helpful! I started my Wave Sweater and the pattern isn’t too difficult so far. I am going to rip my yoke back a few rows and restart the colorwork since I misread a couple lines on the instructions. Now that I know what to do it seems pretty straightforward. I hope it goes well for you! I’d love to know what colors you plan to make it in - all the combinations I’ve seen on Instagram are stunning.

    My friend and I are celebrating our 1 year knittiversary this week by casting on a new sweater project! Great tips shared in your video! One that I might add is...once I decided that I was going to make sweaters/garments for myself, I really enjoy(ed) researching the patterns and then buying the yarn for quite a few upcoming projects, but for some of the projects, by the time it was the right time to cast one on, maybe I knew more about patterns then and wouldn't pick that one any longer, or the same thing with the yarn or the colorway. Then you have a sweater's quantity of yarn and it doesn't suit your needs/taste/pattern/skill level any longer. So I guess my advice (to myself!) is to not get too many projects in the queue at a time.

    • @saskia_makes
      @saskia_makes  9 місяців тому +1

      That is such a fun idea! And that makes sense - I’ve really been struggling with that on the sewing/fabric front! Too much fabric and too little time ☺️ thanks for leaving a note - good luck with your new sweater project!

    Great video! I don't consider myself all that experienced but I've learned some things and it kind of looks like I'm doing more things that I used to be able to do and more things that other people are comfortable doing, so... From the position of not that confident experienced knitter (lol), I think you gave great advice! What is especially nice about your approach is that you're explaining the reasons you find something useful, so people watching will be able to tell how each particular piece of information fits into their own experience, whether it's similar, whether it differs, if it differs how, etc. Overall, I think your video is top notch quality stuff that is not that very easy to find in one place. Kudos!

    The way I gasped when you showed us the porcelain sweater, because … that’s my dream sweater. As soon as I saw it, I was like I NEED THIS IN MY LIFE. I’ve never done pattern color work sweaters. So I don’t know how difficult this would be, but I’ve made 3 adult sweaters, they’re raglan sweaters though. So never done a drop shoulder, but I really want to just jump on this pattern.
    I will buy the pattern and study it and maybe do swatches with cheaper yarn, before buying expensive yarn to use for the porcelain sweater

    • @saskia_makes
      @saskia_makes  8 місяців тому +1

      I don’t think it’s that bad since it’s broken up into sections, and then you have a break working with just the main color. I definitely think it makes sense to swatch with cheaper yarn before you buy a sweater quantity just to make sure you enjoy the colorwork (especially knitting it flat), but I hope you end up making it! I’m super happy with the final product (I’m actually wearing it today 😁). This was only my second adult sweater, so I think if you’re persistent and patient it’s super doable. Let me know if you end up making it!

      I know this comment was from 6 months ago and maaaaaybe you have done it long ago, but just in case you didn't yet:
      There's also a yoke version of the porcelain sweater that is worked in the round top down. I myself decided I will do this one first to practice because it's easier and I'm used to knitting top down, and then when I did that I will proceed with the original one.

      @@sasakstn I have not yet done this sweater because I’m scared haha but I feel like I would be comfortable in the round versus knitted flat
