Paul Carrack, the lead singer on this song, worked with several different bands. He also sang "Tempted" by Squeeze, "The Living Years" by Mike and the Mechanics, and "Don't Shed a Tear" as a solo artist.
My wife and I saw the ska band Madness play at San Francisco's Kabuki Theater in 1984, and it wasn't until they introduced Paul Carrack that we realized he was playing keyboards for them. While the rest of the band took a break, he did a spine-tingling acoustic version of "Tempted." One of my all-time favorite concert moments...
That's the genius of the song, though -- he may have written it about one thing, but the theme is universal enough that anyone can relate to it even without knowing what it's about, and either interpretation is equally valid. :-)
This song wasn’t written about cheating. The bass player was doing side work on the sly. Paul Carrack(legendary singer and writer and singing lead here) found out and wrote this song. Notice that the bass player is never in a close up shot. This is the only song they did before breaking up. Still a great song. Listen to “The Living Years”. He sang this when he was with Mike (Rutherford-guitar) and the Mechanics. It’s a beautiful song that you appreciate more and more every time you listen.
Linda Stevenson I don’t usually get emotional on the feed, but Dad’s the only person I adored and hated at the same time. Conflicting emotions that I still deal with to this day. 💔
Love this!!!! The singer is Paul Carrack. He also sang with Squeeze and Mike And The Mechanics. *"How Long"* - W/ Ace *"Silent Running"* & *"Living Years"* - W/Mike And The Mechanics *"Tempted"* - W/ Squeeze
I am almost 59 years old and I have loved music all my life and most genres. I love watching people react to the songs that I loved so much while growing up...this is the first time that I have heard a song differently now than I did when I was hearing it as a kid. I did not give this song even half the credit that it deserved back then. Now I hear so many parts that I absolutely love, but never noticed before. That guitar solo... LOVE IT.
@TheSnoop2222 Ofcourse he was in Squeeze... as was Jools Holland for a bit. Apart from Lennon & McCartney there aren't too many duo writers in pop that could write popsongs like Difford & Tilbrook. When they were 'hot' back in the day I bought one of their singles (Labelled with love), ending up playing only the B-side which was their tongue-in-cheek take on the Stars On 45 fad: "Squabs on Forty Fab". Which included some of their hits and the very distinctive Stars on 45 disco clapping :-) Since the Stars on 45 thing was created by a dutch DJ/producer AND I am Dutch as well, I found the joke by Squeeze especially funny. The actual 7" vinyl single has been lost ages ago, and I haven't thought of the song for years. Big was my surprise that I just now found out it's on UA-cam as well :-) ua-cam.com/video/QaZmGWo87-I/v-deo.html
Paul Carrack the singer here is still a very special talent today. He also sang lead for Mike and tbe Mechanics on Living Years. There is a recent years version of this tune on UA-cam at a party of sorts. In it Carrack let's the more than willing audience take over singing lead which must be very special for the performer and writer to have your song adopted so widely as a standard. That's when you know your music will be around longer than you will.
Watching your pleasure in this song is really delightful to watch. You pick up on all the cool elements of what the band members are delivering. Very satisfying reaction!
Paul Carrack wrote this song when he was only 16 years old,He played in Glasgow,Scotland 2018 i went to see him and was so lucky to meet him in the studio bar after the show,as a solo performer he is worth going to see.
J Bands like this & Bread & Ambrosia etc. & Gordon Lightfoot, Jim Croce etc. these 70’s bands & artists was where it was at! They’re timeless beautiful songs that just soothe you and oh so talented!
Thanks for bringing back some good memories.. and I just realized this guy is also the lead singer for "Mike and the Mechanics" check out "The Living Years" It's a great song.
Hey, your natural reactions when you're really getting into a song are THE BEST! We can totally identify to those reactions, because we are having the same reactions to this song.
That bass groove running on the down beat is really nice ! and those rollovers are a nice touch too.. Simple, (hooky) solid groove with a nice melody... yep I'll take it!🎵🕺
This is one of the songs I was going to recommend , so very happy to see you react to it J, Love Paul Carrack, he's from my hometown, Sheffield. As others have said The Living Years and also Looking Back Over My Shoulder are other great songs he recorded with Mike & The Mechanics.
I know exactly where i was when i heard that song for the first time and was brand new to America .Since it was such a defining moment in my life , it seems i can't forget this song even though i barely understood English .
When this song came out.I wasn't a kid,an not yet a teenager, but I could figure it out. This brought back great memories for me. Keep up the good work though.
One thing I love about these videos is the vintage guitars they played. A Gibson SG (Angus Young’s main ax) and some type of Gibson hollow body with a cutaway in the back there. Awesome! 🎸
Buoyed by a thumping bass and proto-Disco guitar, "How Long?" (1974) was the only hit by UK Pub Rock act Ace - and it has become a bit of a standard (covered by many artists, including Lipps Inc. and Rod Stewart) in the years since, but their singer and pianist Paul Carrack had several other hits under several other names for several more years. He sang lead (in duet) on the New Wave/Blue-Eyed Soul CLASSIC "Tempted" (1981), which you definitely ought to react to. It didn't actually even crack the Top40 in the US (#49) or the UK (#41) but has become a cross-format radio hit, compilation cut, and soundtrack feature in the decades since. A lot of New Wave hits are like that, actually. Paul Carrack cracked the US Top40 as a solo artist, though. First, the next year with the Motown-indebted solo hit "I Need You" (1982, US#37) then, in later in the decade with "Don't Shed a Tear" (1988, US#8). He also had a few hits as part-time lead vocalist (Paul Young sand their other hits) with the Genesis-spinoff band Mike + The Mechanics. First with the New Wave-flavored "Silent Running" (1985, US#6) and their worldwide smash tearjerker ballad/anthem "The Living Years" (1989; US#1, UK#1, IRE#1, CAN#1, AUS#1).
I'm not sure why this group didn't break out and really go big. They were obviously really talented. This song brings back a lot of memories of high school days. By the way, so sorry to hear about your mishap, and that your ribs are in pain. You're gonna have to curb the dancing in your chair; don't bruise them further. Great reaction, Bro, as always.
Paul Carrack is a fantastic singer and songwriter. Seen him live. As well as “The Living Years” as many have suggested already check out “Over My Shoulder” by Mike & The Mechanics and he was also in the British band Squeeze for a short time. Listen to “Tempted”.
I might have went a bit overboard today I have so many videos incoming 80s, 90s 20s upcoming

You just can’t go wrong with 70’s Soft Rock.
No no you can’t! Who knew?
Yup, this is classic 70s. 🙂
@Diana Gero without a doubt
So true my friend. Don't come much better than the 70's.

Paul Carrack, the lead singer on this song, worked with several different bands. He also sang "Tempted" by Squeeze, "The Living Years" by Mike and the Mechanics, and "Don't Shed a Tear" as a solo artist.
raymondluxuryacht86 I didn’t know that was him!
My wife and I saw the ska band Madness play at San Francisco's Kabuki Theater in 1984, and it wasn't until they introduced Paul Carrack that we realized he was playing keyboards for them. OH!! please react to the living years!!!!!
@@ska4me how fantastic is that
@@yvetteadshead4212 It was pretty fantastic! Very glad I was there to witness it! :-)
Love this song. Its actually not a love song. Its about the bass player being secretly asked to join another band. Ha.
Was he still the Bass player when they recorded this song?
I love knowing the back story behind a song. Thank you so much for telling us about this one.
That's the genius of the song, though -- he may have written it about one thing, but the theme is universal enough that anyone can relate to it even without knowing what it's about, and either interpretation is equally valid. :-)
Really?? I absolutely thought it was about a love relationship as well. Thanks for the heads up.
I thought it was about a woman cheating...who knew? The clue was at the start of the song with that bass intro!
Never realised that, thanks for the info
Love that song 😍
The lead singer, Paul Carrack went on to front Mike and the Mechanics.
I love them. I cry every time I hear ‘In the Living Years’. Reminds me of all the things I forgot to say to my old Dad. 💔
Turd Ferguson I feel the same when I hear it. Very emotional song ❤️
Linda Stevenson Very. 👍
Linda Stevenson I don’t usually get emotional on the feed, but Dad’s the only person I adored and hated at the same time. Conflicting emotions that I still deal with to this day. 💔
Turd Ferguson I think music brings these feelings to the surface and allows us to vent which is a good thing. Sometimes it’s good to go with it.
One of the best British songs of the 70's and on my top 20 favourites list.............. from any era..............
You are killing it with the reactions my friend
Jay Smith JV is THE MAN! 😎😎😎
Jay Smith thank you
Oh wow! One of my all-time favorites! Yeah!

Love this!!!! The singer is Paul Carrack. He also sang with Squeeze and Mike And The Mechanics.
*"How Long"* - W/ Ace
*"Silent Running"* & *"Living Years"* - W/Mike And The Mechanics
*"Tempted"* - W/ Squeeze
He also wrote Love Will Keep Us Alive for the Eagles.

What a great song this is...very cool reaction 😎.
The lead vocalist of this song was also the lead vocalist on "Tempted" by Squeeze, a song that I strongly recommend.
Love Squeeze. Saw them live in TO.
Tempted is a true classic.
@TheSnoop2222 Ofcourse he was in Squeeze... as was Jools Holland for a bit.

Paul Carrack is one of the greatest and most underrated leads in music.
So true, he should be as popular as phil collins.

Seventies soft rock has some seriously smooth gems.

Good choice. Great song.
Paul Carrack is a great blue eyed soul singer from Britain. Been in tons of bands and has been solo for a long time.
Jay Ferguson Thunder Island is great. And a song called Chevy Van Don't recall the artist name.
Another great one hit wonder from the 70's is Tarney Spencer Band - No Time To Lose.
One of my absolute favorites❣️ 70s music was the best❣️
