On a slightly tangent, the steelworks at Port Talbot shut down on October 1st. Britain no longer produces steel. If the UK, amongst others, is going to have to boost its military, then some degree of industrial capacity is necessary. It seems completely crazy that at a time when military spending is looking likely to rise, that the country is shedding its capacity to supply the needs of its armed forces.

Not 300 million. Germany 85, France 65, Italy 62, Spain 42, Poland 40, Netherlands 25. That makes 320 million, and there are 21 more countries. Call it 470 million for argument's sake; 3x times the population of Russia.

Correct. But if an American president would just ignore any call for help, congress will have a hard time to force his hand.
True, but as Commander-in-Chief he could simply ignore any NATO pleas for military aid should they come.
Have you seen the Repugs in Congress?
And do not forget that may be the rule at the moment but Trump is not given to obeying rules or the law and would probably change them to suit whatever mood he was in anyway. Remember "Dictator in Day 1"!!! As though anyone really believes it would ONLY be Day 1!
Deployment of troops, what units, what numbers, where and when is the Presidents decision. So the US president could respond with a few AWACS, some satellite images, and some equipment and still be consistent with NATO obligations equal to many European nations.

I can't see that Trump would leave NATO. Not if it meets its commitments. That was his whole point, the US was having to pay too much to protect members not meeting their obligations. And it was a very fair point as far as I can see. And guess what he was right and now you see EU countries saying they have to play catch up and increasing their spending. If the club says you are meant to pay x to be in it then you should pay x, and it's a bit rich to blame Trump and use it against him when it was the others not meeting commitments.
The USA allocates less than 1% of its GDP towards NATO, less than any other member. As usual, Trump just lies about everything. The rest of the US defense spending is for American bases in the Middle East, Asia etc.
If Trump says it, I find it hard to truly believe. Like have you seen evidence, looked into it yourself or are just believing what he says?
@@FionnCr It is based on seeing him make the point to NATO and members (which is recorded). So that is eyewitness evidence of watching him do it in a video. He was definitely complaining about other countries not meeting their commitments. He made the point to Jens Stoltenberg's face as I recall. And it is an objective fact that many NATO members were not meeting their agreed percentage of GDP at the time he was making this point (or prior to that). So there is no speculation that Trump was disgruntled with NATO for this reason. What is being suggested here is the illogical leap that because he was using a threat to encourage other members to meet their commitments it means he is anti-NATO.
Now I am speculating when I say I can't see he would pull out. I am not inside his head. But it is an educated guess, and seems fairly certain to me based on the fact it would clearly and overwhelmingly not be in America's interest to do so, especially now that members seem to be taking their commitment to spending a little more seriously and not just relying on America to fund it as disproportionately.
But of course not because they listened to Trump, but because they saw the reality of an aggressive Russia and how weak they are against that with low defence budgets. But that doesn't change the fact that Trump's point was fair and was actually "right" in this instance.
The US gains extra strength from being the Centre State of the West. While there is plenty of BS out there about the demise of the United States, splitting with the West would see dire consequences for the US.

The fall in the Rouble’s value is significant in a few corners. On the other hand, the Rouble has never been a strong currency, internationally. So, the value of the Rouble is immaterial to most countries and global trade. Russia’s de-dollarisation could prove far more dire, as Russia is running our of reserve currencies. NATO must offer Ukraine immediate membership. Couple that with an immediate call for a ceasefire and the opening of negotiations. That guarantees a free Ukraine and spares them a demographic apocalypse. It presents Putin with a face saving off ramp to end the war. Moreover, his BRIC associates will be on board with such an initiative that ends the fighting. Even if left with a frozen conflict (i.e. Korean War Armistice of 1953) that would be better than an escalating hot war.

In terms of Trump, unpredictability is a pretty meager virtue to bring to the table.
I think this analysis about a future European war misses an important point. There's a lot of talk about how many front line soldiers and how long to train them. Aren't we reinventing the infantry fighter with remote controlled drones, and later AI drones, in the same way when tanks came along we quit using horses.
Right now Ukraine has inexpensive drones that can take out one or a small group of fighters. They have remotely controlled 'flying guns' and small ATVs mounted with machine guns. They have drones that can drop thermite into trenches and groups of enemy. One side should be able to fight off enemy soldiers while sitting in a comfortable chair, in a comfortable room, far from the fighting field, using a joystick and button.
Train pilots. Why? Why do we need a human in the plane. Look at Tesla FSD. It constantly observes 360 degrees around itself and responds more reliably and quicker than a human.
We should get to the point at which we can send out hunter drones that use camera input and AI to find and destroy enemy targets. No remote control needed. No GPS signal needed.
Rather than to start building up to fight the last war over, think about how the next war may actually be fought.
Hopefully, and most likely, that is what the actual people on the inside of the Pentagon are doing versus what those on the outside may think they are doing.
If you watch military news closely, this is exactly what has been happening. To be an actual human on the incoming war-front will be a horrific thing.
aaam, what is going on in Ukraine is WW2 but with drones.. basically. Trench warfare with heavy Artillery battles.
One of the reasons Europes armies are in pretty bad condition is exactly the reasoning you just gave, everyone was preparing for tomorrows wars, and did not expect that tomorrow war will be so fcking similar to ones from the past..

Suppose, that they become a member of the EU and the NATO.

Inter generational wealth will not be achieved unless one of two things happens. Either long term care needs to be cheaper or Medicaid should be prohibited from putting a lien on homes to recoup expenses. It’s never enough to cover it and it strips away the chance for that home to be passed down to the next generation. Those people are usually middle aged with kids in college. They will retire in a small number of years. They now have nothing to put towards their own retirement if they, like me, never worked in a job that paid enough to save for retirement. Which leaves people like me with nothing but social security to rely on. And that’s poverty level, requiring subsidies just to live. So think harder on inter generational wealth. It works if you have a good job, hopefully with a company that matches what you put away for retirement. But the retirement age is a joke. You’re too old to do half the things you wanted to do upon retirement. The US should be ashamed of that.

I don't understand this fretting over 2% vs. 3% vs. whatever. I heard somewhere that the EU economy is 40x the size of the Russian economy. You guys should be able to outspend them with one hand tied behind your back - it shouldn't even be a contest. What's the deal there?
Regarding the US, I certainly understand you hoping the US stays involved, and honestly I do too. I don't think it's wise long term for us to try to turn out backs on foreign goings on. But given the economic advantage you Europeans have over Russia, it shouldn't matter - you should be able to handle them with or without us, and "with us" would just be a bonus perk.

Thats internal migration, France has long struggled with 'the Muslim question' within their own borders. Would they really side with France against Muslim Chechens?
