Yes corrrect, all members are in both versions of Wolf MV. The difference aside from the language is how prominent the members are. M members have a bigger role in the M version and vice versa. This will be the case with the MV's continuing forward as well. Happy to see you continue with your Exo journey! 😊 History is good right!?
EXO-K and EXO-M were created to perform and promote in the different languages to spread the art of kpop farther and wider. So EXO-K performed and promoted in Korean and EXO-M performed and promoted in Manderin. Sometimes the videos were more segregated and other times they all performed and were present, but they still made two version to showcase either korean or manderin language. So here, they are all singing in korean....the other version will be all them again, but in manderin and each mainly showcases the members of the subunit language sung
EXO's "History" MV is supposed to be an introduction for EXO and it was meant to begin to establish their storyline and concept as a group. To understand their "History" MV, here is what you need to know: As aliens from Planet Exo, the members are about to be sent to Earth on a mission. "History" is thought to be about how EXO are still on Planet Exo and they are preparing to be sent to Earth. So that is why it has a very futuristic look and feel to it. There isn't a whole lot of story because it is a pre-debut MV so this was meant to just introduce the members and establish their concept. "History" is EXO's second pre-debut track. It was released in 2012 -- about 2 months after their first pre-debut song and MV "What is Love," and about 2 months before "Mama," which is EXO's official debut -- so this is more than 12 years ago. "History" is the introduction of the storyline and it explains what lead up to the events in "Mama." In the EXO-K version of "History" we only saw the EXO-K (Korean) members -- Kai, D.O, Suho, Sehun, Baekhyun and Chanyeol -- singing, and in the middle of the song we see them flash to the EXO-M (Chinese) members -- Lay, Kris, Chen, Luhan, Xiumin and Tao -- however, in the EXO-M version we see that the EXO-M members are the main characters in the story and they only show the EXO-K members briefly. This establishes how the two groups are separate and yet still are all part of one group as EXO. Both versions of their MVs may look the same on the surface, but the story is slightly different because it is being told from a different angle or different perspective in each version. Fun fact: If you compare the English translation of the Korean and Mandarin lyrics, you will see that the songs are slightly different. Because, as the intro to their "Mama" MV points out, the two halves of EXO stand on the same ground and see different things and they stand on different grounds and see the same thing -- they are separate groups and yet they become one, etc. Hence, their songs and story are the same and yet different. To understand the story more, it's helpful to look up the lyrics. The song is called "History" and in the lyrics they talk about making history. You will see that the song is about failing at something and trying again to make it right. So, the theory is that in this part of the story EXO made some sort of unknown "big mistake" on their planet, so they have been sent to Earth to try and right their wrongs by trying to prevent the Red Force from causing a "big mistake" or prevent humanity from allowing a "big mistake" to happen on Earth. They are trying to prevent "History" from repeating itself. And they want to make "History" here on Earth. It establishes the whole reason why EXO are fighting against the Red Force and why they need to find the Tree of Life and restore peace, as you will see explained in their "Mama" MVs. They can't let whatever happened on their planet happen again on Earth, etc. The part of the dance where they put their hands in their pockets and shake their pants, I interpret as the nervousness and uncertainty that they are feeling as they are about to embark on this new journey as they prepare to go to Earth and also as a representation of the nerves and excitement they are feeling as they are about to debut. As you can see, even the choreography is designed to tell the story. However, just so you know, we didn't fully understand that was what the MV and song was trying to tell us, until several years later, after we had more context to go on after we had several other MV stories and more information. But that is why we say, if you want to try and follow EXO's story you have to pay attention to everything and you have to remember as much detail as you can about everything you have ever seen and heard from EXO. Because although you might think you understand one piece of EXO's story, with every new release from EXO, we get a little more information, and, sometimes it helps to confirm what we thought to be true and sometimes it turns the whole theory on its head and makes us realize what was happening wasn't what we thought after all. What complicates this even more is the fact that almost nothing in their storyline is in chronological order, so we EXO-Ls have to become detectives and analyze every aspect of everything any of the members are involved in to try and piece it all together and figure out where each part fits within their larger storyline. And I literally mean everything, from their teaser videos, to their MVs, to their song lyrics and live performances, concert VCRs (videos played in between sets at their concerts) and even some of their choreography, as well as their sub-unit and solo work. Everything EXO does is connected. And now that story has branched out even further to include all of SM Entertainment's groups and artists storylines. Everything that SM produces is all part of one giant story, like a giant graphic novel or mystery movie series, and it's all connected to the SM universe storyline, that all started with EXO in 2012. Each new MV or project is another chapter in the story, and it's up to us fans to figure out where it all fits in the larger storyline. To see their dancing better, check out the dance practice for "History," the choreography is very unique. They have an EXO-K dance practice and an EXO-M dance practice. And it's one of their few choreographies where the two groups are not combined because, as you saw, they were completely separate groups in these MVs.
"Wolf" was EXO's first comeback since their debut promotions and it came out in May 2013 as part of their XOXO album. "Wolf" was another one of EXO's songs that the mainstream public thought SM was making an even bigger mistake with. It was a song and concept that was too unique for most mainstream listeners when it first came out, and most people didn't really like the song or the MV. However, as many have discovered, it's one of those songs that once you listen to it more, it grows on you, and now it has become much more popular. What we see in their "Wolf" MV is that all 12 members come together to form the Tree of Life and in the middle of the song we see how they split up into EXO-K and EXO-M and each group creates their own tree. How I interpenetrate that is they are showing how the tree has now been split in half and each half of the tree represents the two halves of EXO. In the intro to "Mama" they talk about how the Tree of Life has been split in two and each half has been hidden away. It's EXO's job to find the two halves of the Tree of Life and reunite them to restore peace in the world. Also, how EXO worked when they were split up into the two groups was that everyone was involved in both MVs, but they were never exactly the same because in the Korean version the EXO-K members were featured more prominently and were the ones to sing the main parts of the song, however, in the Mandarin version the EXO-M members take over the main parts. If you notice, in their "Wolf" MVs, the main scenes are almost exactly reverse of each other. In the Korean version they are on the right side of the screen, and in the Mandarin version they are on the left side. As the intro to "Mama" points out, when the two halves of EXO stand on the same ground they see different things, and when they stand on different ground, they see the same things. Therefore, the story in the K MVs is being told from the EXO-K members point of view, where in the M MVs the story is told from the EXO-M members view point. As you can see, in "Wolf" the members are supposed to be a wolf pack, so the entire MV and the song is them acting like wolves. The designs on the walls and ceiling say EXO, because as a wolf pack, they are supposed to be inside EXO's cave or the pack's den, etc. (Which some theories have pointed to, could be connected to SuperM's "Tiger Inside" MV.) The choreography was created to use movements that made them seem like wolves, and the moves, such as them showing their claws and bristling their backs and shaking are all things that wolves do as they compete for power and attention, etc. The wolf comes out of the forest (as he scratches the ground behind the Tree of Life) in the beginning of the MV and he is stalking his prey. Their prey is the girl that, in the song, they are talking about being so obsessed with and in love with that they can't help but act like a wolf and capture her so that no one else can have her, etc. Just like in their "Growl" and "Call Me Baby" MVs, the camera is another character in the story. The camera is supposed to represent the girl that they are singing to. We as viewers are supposed to imagine that we are standing in that room while the EXO members try to get our attention. That is why they stare so intensely at the camera and why the camera follows them around because they are all competing for "the girl's" i.e. camera's attention. Which is why as wolves we see them fighting with each other. I'm not sure how this concept was supposed to fit into EXO's larger storyline, but many feel that after Kris, Luhan and Tao left the group that the wolf part of the story was completely dropped and it is no longer part of EXO's story. So, we just watch it as a fun side story now instead. However, there are still parts of this storyline and concept that could be connected to EXO's main storyline. For example, it is often thought that the girl that EXO sings about in their songs is a manifestation of the heart of the Tree of Life. So, that is why they become so enamored by her and so possessive and protective of her, etc. Protecting the heart of the Tree of Life -- or the girl -- is what EXO has been sent to Earth to do. If you look up the English translation of the lyrics for "Wolf" you will see that the main point of the song is they are saying, I'm a wolf, I'm a wolf and I love you so fiercely that I am going to capture you and possess you and devour you like the wolf that I am. I never quite understood why in the studio recording/MV of the Mandarin version of "Wolf", they left the Korean word for I love you -- saranghaeyo -- in the Mandarin song, and turned it into a nonsense English phrase that has no meaning. Because, if you ever hear EXO-M perform "Wolf" live in China, they always changed the lyrics to say Wǒ ài nǐ, which is I love you in Mandarin. And it doesn't sound strange or out of place, so why didn't they change it for the MV? Just one of those odd choices SM made that we may never understand. :D "Growl" was the follow up song to "Wolf. "Growl" was the song that was the lead track on the XOXO repackaged album, which came out in August 2013. Once you hear "Growl," you should check out EXO's "Growl"/"Wolf" Drama video, ua-cam.com/video/sFCvZUSnuus/v-deo.html. Watching the drama also might help to explain more of the story in their "Wolf" MV, however, as I said, I'm not sure the story goes any further than being mostly just a fun side story now. Fun fact: Kris' eyes turning red will make more sense once you watch the drama version. On top of being aliens they -- Kris and Luhan in particular, and maybe Lay -- also are wolves. Just watch the short drama video to see what I mean.
I remember when Wolf just got released, my friends and I watched the Korean version first, and I turned to one of my friends and I was like: "the M members are singing in Korean?!!"
Thank you for reacting to both versions, I miss other people's reactions to this, the versions, despite being very similar, have different elements and I feel that getting to know EXO just by listening to the Korean version loses a lot of the content in general
The debut performance of EXO with history is iconic. D.O. carried that entire stage with his live vocals while the other members were lip syncinc. That performance will never not be funny to me 😂😂 If you want to check it out: ua-cam.com/video/wtAyCS6-DSk/v-deo.html
Exo-K had over major vocalists, Exo-M had major rappers. I honestly preferred both versions for different reasons. Both teams had their moments to shine but its obvious Exo-M were given short end of the stick.
I also believe that the Korean versions sound better because of the language, I think it flows better with the Korean language and I believe that they put more effort into the songwriting of the Korean versions. I also think that because Chen and Xiumin are not actually Chinese they would sing more comfortably in Korean songs which would also sound better. Idk just my opinion. But what really sounds bad is when EXO is 9 and they still make Chinese versions of their songs (sometimes without Lay) so with none of them or or only one of them having Chinese as a mother tongue 😂 I don't even speak Chinese but you can tell the pronounciation sounds awkward. The songs at some point just feel like a translation and not a song on their own. They also stopped doing those Chinese versions at some point.
I guess its all very personal then, as I prefer the Mandarin versions. I think the Mandarin sounds beautiful and the lyrics are so much more poetic. I only speak a little Mandarin, still learning as I am British. There are some songs I prefer the EXO-K versions, but its definitely the minority.
