Operating machinery is unbelievably satisfying. I grew up from the age of 11 driving the skidder and dragging logs out of the woods working for my dad. It was the most amazing amazing and wonderful thing to do. I still love you I’m 58.
I am a grader operator and got to say I love my job. I drove tractor trailer for 16 years and 5 years ago I made a change I thought about starting to haul oversized loads when an opportunity to get on our local DOT came up for plowing snow in the winter and took the challenge and it worked into me getting the equipment operator position here and I can honestly say I love my job there is days I miss the road but wouldn't even think about going back. Since coming here I've learned to run dump truck, backhoe, grader, loader, excavator, roller and the other day got to run a skid steer with a sweeper that is what makes this job so enjoyable you are always doing something different.
I used to work in the gravel pits west of Detroit, I was like a kid in a sandbox lol. The 560 huff was a beast and a good machine for loading trucks. The next best machine was a 190 northwest dragline.
Operating just about any equipment is the highlight of my day. I was raised on a farm running tractors and combines, dozers and backhoes so it also feels natural, like I’m right where I’m supposed to be.
Skidsteers can beat you up… mini is usually pretty smooth and quite. :) plus our skid is open cab and our mini is in closed and has heat and AC… so easy win for mini
man my last time using a skid was 25 yrs ago. they were 2 stick for forward/reverse/turns and 2 pedals did your boom and bucket. they have changed a lot
They're still around honestly I've used my fair share of both and once you get the hang of it it's fun but using it continuously for hours will wear you out haha
In my opinion, Cat D9G dozer, full U blade. Favorite machine by far. It's one of those machines that operates you, unlike the newer Hi tracks which you operate it.
I was the crew lead for the excavation team at a fiberglass pool company. Absolutely loved the two skids I frequently towed along. One was an older bobcat, wheeled, but it was like a mini skid. Like imagine a skid with a full cab but it was the size of a dingo. Couldn't find a newer version, but it was nice because I could drive straight through a 3.5' gate without having to take the fence down and being so small the thing was a blast to rip around our storage property. The other skid was a Takeuchi Tl12v2. Complete opposite end of the spectrum. Thing was the largest skid we could get, still relatively compact even compared to the 18000 lb mini-ex. But this beast would cleara a dump trucks/ 20 tons worth of material in a few minutes with a fully sealed cab, a/c, bluetooth, enough roof to fit another person in the cab with me and my feet up.
It took me the better half of 5 hrs to understand how to run a skiddy to help my buddy build a bmx track. Got the opportunity, got hooked and working on signing up with my local union to start trading at be an apprentice. Really looking forward to a new career. University didn’t work for me and I want more meaning out of my career. Can’t wait for the application in the mail.
I only operate a skidsteer these days and time drifts away. I used to operate an old cable drive backhoe. It wasn't all that relaxing because you really had to work, but the time still drifted away.
As a farmer I have the stress of organizing the cattle herd and when it it is time for me to be able to get into a tractor in is nice to have time to get the time to relax
I've only operated a skip loader at my first job as a boy at a wholesale nursery. I lied on my application and said I was 15...I was 14. Lol. A year later the boss thought I was 16 and ready for the new responsibility....the good old days.
My landscaper, loaned me his mini excavator and skid loader, I had so much fun, tearing out my yard and using the skid bucket as a garbage can. Makes life easier when you don’t have a good back.
Man I run a wheel loader for a ready mix company, and I get there push material up and then just go got that BT radio AC/Heat and no one bothering me. Yeah it’s 15 hour days sometimes more but the low stress is nice and when we are really slinging mud and it’s all high gear it’s fun.

I have a Kubota bx2380 sub compact tractor and I am always looking for something to do with it. 2yrs of ownership and have 175hrs on it. It is a big back saver.

My cousin had to spend 30k on a new GPS system because they discontinued the system it ran on. His system was fine they just stopped that line of gps from working (just fine I might add). All so they could make more money. And they wouldn't sell him the stuff to do it had to have the dealership do it. So his machine was down for almost a year

" I couldn't hear my phone , needed materials at lot 106 ASAP , nobody around to unload " in reality I got the call that they are 10 minutes out so I run to the skid steer to swap bucket out for forks , Ac on blast The operators favorite saying at the end of the day " I'm tired I'll dig that utility in tomorrow. What in the hell did you do today sit in a air-conditioned cab moving your hands while listening to some talk radio.
Great question! They are a big investment that can also earn good money. I have and owned other equipment over the years and have learned unless you’re using it once a week or so you’re better off renting and billing it to the job
The pilot controls are easy to learn. You can get the hang of it after a day or so but you keep getting better and better as the years go by. It never gets old I love running it.
Um yes and grain cart or skidloader idk also the fact that my dad was teaching me how to run skidloader at 7 yet some people die not knowing how to use them also you forgot to show high low speed lights radio hydraulic conect the swich to keep bucket level whatever its called
until you have to use a backhoe with forks. i have stabbed way too many pallets of product because i cant see the god damn forks or hit a tiny bump while going in.
I only operated a kubota KX-075 S excavator for my drain company. I’m begging my boss to buy a tilt rotator for it. It’s the most relaxing thing ever. I remember when I loaded my first dump truck I almost had tears in my eyes cause I was so happy

When I was 14 I started running a cherry shaker and it was so much fun. I looked forward to harvest every year but now a mini x is relaxing feels like its part of me when I am running it

Ok the Volvo 150/180 loader is the best for loading lorries at the quarry, next a dozer with a pat blade your the boss in that kit 👍 finally a cat drot with that grab clamb it’s awesome for clearing up, oh forgot the long reach 360 👍👏👏👏, the most one that will bite you back is the drot particularly on a rubbish tip when covering with frag 🤤
Case controls are so much more precise and easy to use than cat controls. I'm only saying that because I have 30,000 hours experience and I've ran all of them. Bobcat foot controls are better than your left hand driving steer right hand bucket.
24 ton komatsu excavator, 10 hours a day . Its when i do all my thinking, fone calls and listen to my favourite talk back radio programs and music. Relaxing , yes sometimes its hard to stay awake after lunch.

I’m the opposite. We have 2 of the foot control ones here in our Air Force shop for clearing snow. It can be a real headache when you’re trying to drive and do the bucket at the same time. Unless you’re REALLY REALLY good at it and spend a lot of time in it, it’s usually slower than our joystick ones. It makes no sense to put them on the floor really. Why you would use to analog controllers for driving is beyond me. That’s like 1950’s style technology.

I can run machines all day and never get bored or tired. Something about becoming one with the machine is so relaxing, to me anyways! 😅 Good on you for teaching people how to operate machines, a lot of people don’t know and no one will take the time to show them. I taught myself how to run/operate everything because some old man told me “no one going to teach you just jump up there and fake it until you make it” that’s exactly what I did.
I’ve only driven a forklift (2.5 years). Which is okay mostly. But when your driving bunks of 16 footers at max height in the air, or through an 18ft gap, you gotta focus. Or if your loading up a truck and have to be careful about people and vehicles. Not relaxing, but fun.

I like the ones with the foot controls for the bucket. Once you get use to it, it just feels much smoother and even more relaxing.
I hate the foot controls, I feel like I can be much more accurate with my hands. It’s all just what you are used to I guess!
