- 2022 sees the 40th anniversary of Bentley adding almighty turbocharged power to its usual luxury experience, a receipe that evolved into the Turbo R and continues to this day with the modern Flying Spur V8. How have Bentley's sports saloons evolved over more than three decades?

Dear Car Industry, here is my Christmas list: 1) Stop putting gigantic alloy wheels with tiny tyres on your cars 2) Stop making cars bigger and bigger 3) Stop removing switches and buttons and replacing them with touch screens. Thank-you. Love, Robsa (age 51years 4 months)
The Turbo R is a gentleman's motor carriage. The new Flying Spur is best kept for footballers, pop singers and reality TV "stars". Nuff said .
The Turbo R is much more elegant. If you ask me Bentley haven't made a good looking car since the Arnage, I'd have one of those in a heartbeat.
You wouldn’t be disappointed , though even the Arnage has some bits that make me wince compared with the Turbo R generation . Plastic ashtrays 😱
I quite like the Mulsanne
Agree, if the new one had a VW badge on its boring nondescript grille I wouldn't be surprised. And those awful carbon sill trims look terrible. I'm sure the new one is dynamically terrific but it has zero gravitas I'm afraid. Inside and out I'd much rather have the Turbo R.
Hmmm, the new one’s ok. But it’s the Arnage that I’d go for - lovely cars!
Arnage is lovely, have you seen the Brooklands?!
Agreed. I bought an Arnage earlier this year (facelift 2005). It's an astonishing car. So much going on. Getting to know it bit by bit but waiting for better weather. The new Bentleys are nice of course, stunning cars, but feel more mass produced.
@@interestedparty7428 Congrats on your Arnage!!
@@CarsofGlasgow Thank you - I flew up to Scotland to collect mine, into Edinburgh then a drive past The Kelpies to Fishcross in Clackmannanshire then a drive back. You have a lovely country with lovely people.
I’ve owned 3 1989 Turbo R’s and just purchased a 1997 LWB Turbo R -> 385 horsepower and 569 ft. Lbs or torque…let me tell you something…nothing compares to the old school hand built Bentleys. You must drive one once in your life if you can.
I sometimes do ‘Dream garage from carmakers A-Z’ in my head on long bike rides or trying to get to sleep. Like a Jay Leno sized garage. This ‘89 era Bentley is the ONLY Bentley I pick in this game.
The Flying Spur is a dismal piece of design and gives the game away that Bentley is really VW's high end luxury division. Where's the character, the charm, the presence? The Turbo R may be conservative, but it has these attributes in abundance.
why is the shift not on the steering column. I wouldnt buy the car for that reason when an S class has the shift on the column where its tidy and convenient
I agree with you Robin. Just cannot fathom why they dropped the Mulsanne while continuing with the Flying Spur, a far inferior car IMO. I see nothing to be gained from having the Flying Spur over a RR Ghost, but many reasons to have the Ghost rather than the Bentley....
The windows on the new car are like letter boxes compared with the old one.
New interior has far too much "Bling"
The Turbo R looks like a car designed for a gentleman with nothing to prove, the new one for someone who has made money and wants to flaunt it.
Can't believe how small the Turbo R looks when parked next to the modern behemoth! It actually looks almost perfectly sized/proportioned
Yeah the Turbo R looks wide on its own but its small by comparison of a modern car. Could you imagine it compared to a Mulsanne?
The old Bentley is still very long though 17 ft 4 inches!
The complexity of today's Bentley will send it to the breakers at a young age. We're seeing the last of these highly complex beasts. Where will be the the technical prowess and impetus to maintain such aging complex technology? High end disposables! Much like yesterday's flagship cell phones, buyers are easily bored with yesterday's technoglitz.
Turbo R all day long 👍
I would have the old girl all day long, but i have to say Bentley have a fantastic job on the new it is beautiful 😍👍
A brilliant blend of old and new for sure!
Think I'll stick with my Turbo R thanks! As it's a later one it has almost the same torque as the Flying Spur too.
Can't argue with that, Ben!
IMO my immaculate 89 Turbo RL is my Bentley of choice. As lovely as the new ones are, of course cars need to evolve with the times, I’m devoted to my classic Bentley and much prefer it’s charming brutish style and suave presence than the new era cars.
Curious if the commenters hating the Flying Spurs but love the Turbo R are prospective buyers or drive entry level Fords and Mazdas. Some cheap shots taken in their assessments.
Both are beautiful!
Not that I'm in the market for either of these - whenever I see a modern luxury car such as this Bentley, I'm struck by what a hideous and tasteless lump it is. High-end car designers really have lost the way so far as style goes. Still, I bet they appeal to the masses of 'half-celebs' who buy them! Nice comparison, thank you :-)
Great contrast 👍
My Graphite 89 Turbo RL(1 of 80 LHD's made that year) has subtle presence & is such a hoot to drive. The new one is nice but don't love the huge black wheels, ultra low profile tyres & the letterbox visibility.I'm 75 & hard to teach an old dog new tricks!
Flying Spur V8 is amazing.
it is incredible, did you read they are stopping W12 production :(
As a Turbo R owner I'm probably biased, but you won't be able to work on a Flying Spur with equipment in your garage in 25 year's time...
Old one every time pure class 👍
@classic world, I bought my first Rolls-Royce silver spirit at 20, and am thinking of getting a turbo R. Bentley also did a Brooklands Turbo which is a fabulous car.
Both of em . Both are opulent and powerful . Imma miss those W12 😢🥺🥺
love the Turbo R.. not keen on the Audi. It is so tacky.
Great video, the new Flying Spur looks incredible!
Thanks Phil - remember when you did the Car Mechanics' Product pages !!!!
The new one is fab looking.
Those carbon bits will make a massive difference to the weight of the two ton lump, honest it will!
Somehow the Spur just looks big because, and the black interior looks generic. Alternatively, the Turbo R is big to maintain proportions and the interior looks special.
The elephant in the room of course is DEPRECIATION.
that is true!
God that Flying Spur is proper fugly! Give me the Turbo R any day.
Interesting your comment that in real terms the cost has not gone up in 32 years
Do you think the Turbo R is more of a Mulsanne vs a Flying spur?
the old bentleys were gentlemen cars; the new ones have their markets in china and russia...
Great vid, thanks. On looks alone the Flying Spur loses. It’s a dreadful looking thing - no finesse or class and the interior bilng’s ghastly The Turbo R on the other hand… 👍
The older car gets your vote?
@@ClassicsWorldUK definitely!
I want one. Now! And I don't mean the Flying Spur.
For that amount of money they could at least make the parking sensors fit like they should.
If I'd paid well north of £160k, I'd want something that looks the part.
Love the videos - but - and I'm not OCD - make the Steering Wheel straight before you film ...I'll keep watching!
Both outstandingly fabulous cars but, that was definitely not a comparison. More like a review that drew no real conclusions.
In my 61 unblemished years of driving, (and amateur racing), I've had the privilege to own a number of Rolls Royce and Bentley cars; in my humble opinion, the Bentley Turbo-R is probably the finest Bentley ever made; with the best being offered from 1991 to 1995. These cars are staggeringly good. They're smooth, elegant, very rapid, supremely comfortable and, if ussd regularly, very reliable.
The later Flying Spur is a very different car. Whilst it is very imposing and powerful, for me, it lacks a certain charisma that the older models simply oozed. I spent a month with a 2022 Flying Spur, and it was excellent, but I walked past it in a car park; something that would never happen with an earlier car!
In my opinion, the Turbo-R is the better car in every way. I'm sure dozens will disagree, but in the end, it's all about choice isn't it?
I am such a fan of the current Flying Spur. I would have one over a Rolls-Royce. However take me back to the 90s. I would have a Rolls-Royce over the turbo Bentley
Bring the new one back in 31 years, and we'll see how it is doing. Oh, electronic obsolescence sends it to the breaker's after 10 years? Pity.... 😁
had an 1989 what a maint nightmare, been there done that and the new ones are not that much different..
Just think in 30 years time that Flying Spur will be almost affordable....🤭
Sorry but the New One, Looks Indeed More „English“, Imposante, Elegant & Cool..❤️🥰❤️
The modern one is hideous.
*I JUST GAVE AWAY* a Merc CL600 from the early 200?'s and the new Bentley is essentially indistinguishable except for a more "goping" grill...
WHY would you buy a new Bentley when a £4k ish Merc is basically the same. Same shape, same colour [mine], same stitching on the leather, carbon fibre dash bits, same speed, same acceleration, same suspension, electric everything... I mean it has absolutely NO wow factor at all. Its just A N OTHER luxury box.
The modern one is way, way better designed, It's so pretty compared to the old at its most basic 3 box design. Rolls and Bentleys had barely changed in decades and if they'd stayed stuck in their ways they wouldn't be with us today. They were getting increasingly old fashioned and boring, nowadays they produce cars that even young people lust after. That certainly wasn't the case in the 90s/80s/70s.
@@davekennedy6315 the new bentleys are nicer than new rolls royces but they arnt a patch on the older ones.way to complicated and nowhere near as classy.
Give me the older one any day. The new one is hideous
Old skoolis best
talk english. NOT Nanomster of Torque. Nobody cares nobody knows.
It’s Miles per Hour LB Ft of Torque. MPG. We are Brits not European.
Turbo r should be compared with Mulsanne speed.
The old one still works after such a long time, dont think the new one will. Seen enough hoovies en tavarish to know where the new one will be going in 15 years. Straight to the scrappers :)
G plate is far better and will last longer
Beautiful cars, but really scruffy dress sense!
OK for a ford cortina but surely not in a Rolls..
Your wrong the new Bentley , lt Just doesn't have that quality of the classic...Fast yes ... lts does not feeling British made which is the important point of a Bentley
The 1989 model is a much more attractive car. The new ones are hideous.

What I absolutely don't like on the new Bentley are the idioticly low tyres !
Why does a Cobra 427 have these high BF Goodrich tyres ( that look great ) ?
That Cobra does 150 miles an our , so why these ugly idiot slabs of rubber , and don't tell me it's done for comfort !
The 'brand' hasn't evolved at all. They're still making enormous ugly lumps and as such will surely soon be consigned to the dustbin of history
