      There is a book about the true story of the BOTB showing the ignored British part in the whole offensive. I will try and find the title. It shows that the Americans were NOT the only ones involved (as shown in the movie BOTB which is very poor)

    From a US perspective (disabused of Bastogne mythology), Montgomery did an outstanding job once given command over the joint UK-US forces securing the northern sector of the Bulge and the Meuse River front. But don't forget that US units like the 99th Div's I&R platoon (all 21 of them) who stopped Pieper for an entire day before getting overrun at Lanzerath, and all the US 106th, 28th, infantry, and 82nd Airborne troops who did the same slowing down the 6th Pz Army at St Vith and points south, bought Montgomery the time he needed do to so.

      The Americans were left without leadership for four days before Monty took command, Hodges had fled from his HQ. However some US units stood their ground while others ran, but after Monty stabilized the situation he commented how well the Americans fought. The battle was a failure and breakdown of US leadership, not the troops in the field!

    The Americans like to say the Bulge was an all American battle despite the fact Monty was in command and the US 1st and 9th Armies had been seconded to British 21st Army Group for the duration of the battle. The 3rd RTR destroying two tanks and several other vehicles without loss is a good example of British involvement, though the US provided the bulk of the troops in the offensive to take back lost ground.

    • @lyndoncmp5751
      @lyndoncmp5751 6 місяців тому +3

      I have no problem with American troops being considered the main fighting force. They were. 90% of it. I have a real issue with them ignoring Montgomery's role. He was commanding most of the battle for them from 20th December onwards.

    • @billballbuster7186
      @billballbuster7186 6 місяців тому +3

      @@lyndoncmp5751 The Americans were doing their best to re-write history. Everybody knew Eisenhower and the Commanders of 12th Army Group had dropped the ball. Running around like headless Chickens when the battle of the Bulge began. Monty had to be called in to bail them out.
      Eisenhower, with the collusion of Churchill, lied to the press in order to restore the confidence in the US Army. The fact that Monty had just won the battle for them was brushed under the carpet. Bumbling Bradley was adding to Ike's problems by stirring up resentment among US Commanders, for the humiliation of having Monty leading them.

    • @lyndoncmp5751
      @lyndoncmp5751 6 місяців тому +1

      @@billballbuster7186 Indeed. Hodges actually fled his HQ at Spa in panic and ran away to the safety of Leige. The Germans never even reached Spa. He still fled and had a near nervous breakdown. If he was British he would have been removed.
      So Hodges fleeing, Bradley dithering and doing nothing and Eisenhower's broad front failure allowing the Ardennes retreat to occur in the first place have all been conveniently ignored in subsequent history..... in favour of pointing fingers at Montgomery for a few words in a press conference.
      Its ridiculous.

    • @billballbuster7186
      @billballbuster7186 6 місяців тому +2

      @@lyndoncmp5751 The Americans spun their yarns, for the folks back home and everyone was happy. Churchill did not want the US going back to Isolationism as it did after WW1. Which may have happened had the US felt humiliated. Churchill more than anyone wanted a strong post-war America as a bulwark against the Soviet Union. Churchill greatly influence the US post-WW2 political policies. Especially his "Iron Curtain" speech in Fulton Missouri.
      As for Monty, his career was assured, taking over as CIGS from Alan Brooke in 1945. Then he became Chairman of the NATO Committee in 1948. Followed in 1952 by being appointed the Deputy Commander of NATO until his retirement in 1957. Plus a whole bunch of honors from the Queen.

    Extremely misleading claim. The most powerful German formation, the 6th SS Panzer Army was stopped cold relatively early in the battle by the the US 2nd ID at the Elsenborn Ridge, which ended any chance of German success. The units of the 5th Panzer Army that approached the Meuse were already badly overextended and had little chance success, something that was made very clear in the video.
