  • I'm trying to accomplish several things with this video. 1) See if this will fly. You know what I mean, wink, wink. 2) Break in my new Musikraft neck. It is fun to play. 3) Learn how to use my new Presonus Studio One Artist DAW. They are complicated for a beginner. 4) Learn how to use the Apogee ECS channel strip and 5) Even though you can't see the neck that great, you get an idea on how to play this song. I'll try to do a full tutorial of this beginning soon once I figure everything out. I really hate getting behind in recording technology. It's a time consuming, nerve racking chore to try to catch up.

    Love this, question on how You put the decal on. Did you have any issues? You just had an oil finish correct? Does that make it harder for decal to stick? Just water slide it on.? Everyone is saying you have to clear coat the headstock and the decal, and then seal the sticker on after as well... Thank you this is inspirational, my next neck will be reverse veneer and vintage stainless frets, I think 9.5 radius.

      Very happy. I was getting up there at $570 and didn't go for the extra $40 for the hard rolled edges but maybe next time I will. It would make it just a tad less sharp on the thumb.

    I got rid of all my Presonus gear. Couldnt believe the difference when I used a Midas interface. The presonus sounds so weak compared to the Midas. Every musician asked what I did as it sounds so much better, especially keyboards. I never go back there. Service was bad too, while I had it.
    Your tone/playing, on the other, hand is fantastic. !

    • @millstap
      @millstap  Рік тому

      Which Midas did you get? I was just trying to stay as simple as possible but have decent mic preamps. My interface is a simple Apogee Duet 3. I probably could have done what I need using Garage Band but I thought a better DAW may have better quality. The Presonus Studio One is overkill for just mic'ing two amps and making a track for my videos. This is a mix of the Zoom camera audio and two mics going through the Apogee. It's taken me quite a while just to get this far. I can't imagine what it is like to do multiple instruments and make it sound right. I would go crazy.

    • @pensive_
      @pensive_ Рік тому

      @@millstap Your sound is pretty darn good, so I dont know what the Midas benefit will be over your apogee. It is maybe not worth the effort/price against an obviously seemingly nice apogee you have. Your Presonus DAW is ok if you want a non-analog mix. To me the latter is extremely important to be analog-type as it really adds a nice non-edgy mix.
      However pure Digital such as protools and dedicated analog simulator DAWS such as Mixbus. (my absolute favorite ) Both have place.
      By my experience and opinion just DONT use a Presonus interface. The preamps of the Presonus I had were just awful and low quality, and once I replaced the interface with Midas it was a world-class difference.
      Their marketing blurb is NO Joke. It was audibly obvious to me. I am usually sceptical, about marketing, but they are spot on to my experience.
      "Award-Winning Mic Preamp
      The MIDAS Microphone Preamplifier is considered by leading live sound and recording engineers as the very essence of the famous MIDAS sound. Decades of design experience paired with premiumgrade components is the foundation of that acclaimed warmth and depth, which brings out subtle ambience, maintains spatial positioning, and more effectively captures a precise sound image. That warm and organic MIDAS sound has been heard by millions of concert goers - and recorded for posterity on countless live albums. The award-winning mic preamplifier in the 501 module has been upgraded via implementation of ultra-low noise octal discrete input transistors, which provide incredible sonic flexibility, exceptional dynamic control - and an even more transparent sonic performance.
      "
      All that said, any Midas interface that fits your needs as long as it has the modern "award winning" preamps. That is what matters.
      You dont need a DL32 stage mixer, so I cannot recommend what I have. However anything smaller in a 10x8 or so with the modern preamplifiers will be same quality. Specific model does not matter as you have to see if you want usb or ethernet connectivity.
      My train is Midas&Motu/interface/stageMixer - Linux OS with self compiled RT kernel - Mixbus DAW
      The reason to add Motu is a long story that fills pages and this thread is not suited for it.
      On windows I could never get better than 6ms latency, and live playback/monitoring was always a suck and stick-in-the-mud. I literally tried for better part of a year to get below that with no luck.
      With Linux/Jack/Alsa/Mixbus I get 1.5ms latency without any x-runs !!!! Literally 4x faster than windows.
      So basically I can monitor live what I record and whoever plays can get live feedback what they play through Mixbus WITHOUT the stick-in-the-mud interference that high latency causes.
      BLISS !
      That path however requuires you to be good at Unix/Linux sysadmin to set it up. Luckily I am well qualified with decades of experience.
      Caveat, Your apogee sounds great, so I cannot say for sure that Midas will be a large enough improvement to justify a change
      Apogee is the one interface I did not try as they never had the stage mixers and such I need.
      I can go on, but you rather have to contact me by email if you need more info as this will get too long for youtube chat

      @@pensive_ Pensive, DM on Instagram at millstaps_jimiisms and I will give you my email address. I wish I would have known about Mixbus before I purchased Studio One. I think Sweetwater pushes it for a reason. I had no clue what to get. It was $99 so I went with it since Protools is so expensive and all I need is a simple stereo track to record my audio for my videos. The Apogee is supposed to have decent preamps, of course according to their marketing, but how much can you cram into an oversized iPhone looking thing. I would much rather have analog everything but right now, I'm spending all of my money on guitar necks. I'm going to get another Musikraft neck for my 1964 Strat in rosewood with the large reverse headstock.
      My last attempt to get a decent sound was actually pretty good and better than this video. I can't believe how sensitive everything is especially when trying to mic two amps with two mics. I had the Royer on the Bassman and an AKG in an omni pattern to capture the room between the two amps. For some reason, when I just randomly tilted the Royer at a 45 degree angle just above the top speaker about 6" away in the Bassman cab, it started sounding better. I know phase can be an issue but most of this seems to be a matter of luck sometimes. All this software is still kicking my butt. I need something super simple. I spend hours just messing with the Symphony ECS channel strip which is included with the Apogee. It is an eq/compressor designed by Bob Clearmountain. It's almost a necessity to get a decent sound and I don't understand them much at all. Thank goodness there are a lot of presets that you can tweak to your liking. I really want to focus on my guitar playing and the tutorials I am trying to post so working on recording takes a lot of time away from that.

      I'm super happy with those small frets. You get used to them pretty quickly. They are not any harder than big frets and they have more of an attack to them. I didn't even have to change the setup on my guitar. Everything was perfect. I did put on new strings and adjust the intonation a little.
