@paracosmm79 but the thing about standardized testing in a state is they’re the same exact tests, private or public that’s why they’re standardized that’s how they get the results from each state. It doesn’t matter if you’re in a poor area at public school or the richest area in a private school if it’s in the same state you will have the exact same test. It’s just research has shown generally poorer areas have lower scores and they’re able to figure that out because of them being the same test you have something concrete you can score and average it out.

Actually, they are basing it on merit with this new policy. They are just allowing the applications to come from a broader base, not just a selective housing area. They are also REMOVING the ethnicity part of the application so that the decision committee looks specifically at merit. This is good.

Is this a private school? If so then, so what, they can admit anyone for any reason. Are they government funded in any way by our tax money? Then race should have nothing to do with admissions. Only grades. There shouldn't even be an interview process because then they can just say a student didn't seem like a good fit when they don't want that race in the school. If they want to get tax money then it should be based on grades. You can't even tell them 10% of this race, 20% of that one, because that still ends up discriminating against a higher scoring student who is the wrong race to fill some ridiculous race quota. They did base it on grades, anyone with a 3.5 GPA was eligible. The only thing they know is whether they come from an advantaged or disadvantaged school. In the advantaged schools a cottage industry of test prep centers developed. That gave those students an significant advantage over the disadvantaged areas.

I won’t comment on the racial discrimination allegations, but I will comment on the class disparity. Much like with any Ivy League university or prep school, there are kids who start receiving private tutors and take Saturday classes in ELEMENTARY SCHOOL to help prep them for the TJ admissions test in 8th grade. I grew up in that county. I was in honors classes, an A student, busted my butt in class despite having a rough childhood. I and many other students didn’t even know that the admissions test for TJ was happening till the day it was happening and by then it’s too late to sign up. Whereas the peers who ended up going, had LEGIT been receiving tutoring and help in preparing for it for years. I only found out about the test when classmates told me why they were extra stressed in gym class and they explained it all to me (their parents put EXTREME pressure on them to get in, but that’s a whole other conversation). It’s been over 20 years but I remember that day like it was yesterday 😂 because it was the first time I realized just how so many people have a leg up because of their parents. If I had known about the test, I would’ve signed up to take it. Having known a lot of TJ kids, they are all SUPER smart and deserve to be there. They work their a**es off to get in and stay in! That school is not for the faint of heart lol Much respect to them. The unfairness tho, lies beyond them. It’s economic. The kids that can afford private tutoring and have parents who have time to know about these schools/programs get a leg up on those who’s parents are either too impoverished or too uninformed to start prepping their kids for these opportunities straight out of the womb.

The people in this comment section parroting the word "merit" over and over skipped comprehension class.
The school didn't change their testing or grade requirements, they are just pulling students from additional schools. From the story, a lot of these other schools have lower income students in them.

I remember TJ as a good school and it helped me in my career. But really? Don't blame Biden or his administration. Doesn't seem as though you couldcget into that school because you confused the judicial branch with executive branch. We have three co-equal branches of government . SCOTUS has six, count them, six Republican appointees independent of executive branch influence. Biden has one appointee. So tell us again HOW Biden effected this outcome because your math doesn't add up. Knee jerk accusation. Make it make sense.

How is that? The only thing that has changed is that admissions have become more competitive because more students from previously excluded schools are allowed to apply. They're still held to the same standards as other students. Also, race and names are excluded from the applications.

I loved it in the first sentence when they said we don't tell the gender of the race to the teachers we don't tell them the race of the kids it's race neutral but we're going to take the Asians out and get more people of color any color but white

The admissions are still race neutral. White people are included. How would they be excluded? Especially if they are poor.
