Shinya drum pattern is so difficult to play, first time listening it sound simple, then when i try to break down there are lots of hidden flicks here and there. Truly underrated drummer

There’s something magical about his playing. Shinya is actually a very shy person. When he’s performing their harder music you forget how shy this man is 🤣 Love him.

thats Shinya the drummer from Dir en grey. He has his own UA-cam channel, I really recommend you to check it out. It is hard to believe he is such a hard cord drummer and he is such an adorable, sensible, funny, weird, unpredictable guy. The song he is drumming to is called Glass skin, it is a very nice song.

Shinya has such a wonderful sense of humour. His channel is so much fun. The word "cover" was certainly misleading, though. I could imagine that it has something to do with the members being presented as 'different' people outside of Dir en grey [This sounds completely wrong. I mean it like this: When there are not all five members on stage, when they are not releasing something on their channel together, it's not Dir en grey. All members have their own separate projects outside of Dir en grey and I noticed this kind of 'separation' with some of the others as well.]
What is interesting about him as a drummer [apart form his incredible skills and unbelievably fast hands] is his style which is very important to him. For Shinya, how his drumming looks seems almost as important as how his drumming sounds. He also keeps moving things around on his drum kit depending on the songs they are playing. In that way he might be the most performative drummer out there which makes it incredibly difficult to follow his moves. I've been learning drums for a few years now and I own 3 of their score books and if I learned one thing from trying to play Dir en grey songs it's this: Don't ever watch any Shinya playthroughs or concentrate on his movements during lives to learn playing the songs by yourself. It's just SO confusing at certain points ^^''. This pro shot was awesome to watch though and I really hope he does more of them! [I hope for a playthrough like this for Aka some day. It would be so nice to see him clearly performing this song.]
If you haven't heard Aka yet give it a listen

And I'm sure you managed to find this yourself, but I still wanted to leave a direct link to Glass Skin [live with subtitles by Kaya]

Thank you as always Smitty! I hope you are having a great start to the new week~

I’m a self-taught drummer myself, and Shinya’s sticking pattern for the chorus still eludes me to this day. I see it right here perfectly clear, but I cannot for the life of me get the coordination down. All I know for certain is that the ride cymbal in the chorus is on the off beat, but when he crosses over to the hi hat and keeps switching hands to hit the snare I get lost.

Kyo's voice always outshine the other members of Dir en Grey, had to modify my search to watch people react to Shinya's talent. For me Shinya is the real killer in this band and it's like people don't even know he's a drummer XD

I'm late to comment on this. I just found this video in my yt suggestion and found this real funny, beacuse Shinya himself jokes a few times in his channel about how people start to forget that he is a drummer and now think he is a youtuber. If he sees this he'll probably jokes or mention about it in his next video. It's true that if you look at his channel you wouldn't think about a metal band drummer channel, but that's how he is and I'm glad that in his 25 years of band career he is not changed, still mostly the same as years ago.

You should watch his tour of his drum kit on his channel. I was dying with laughter (at like 3am, trying to hold it in) his humour is DRY. It's very funny. He has a dialogue about different things with (I think) his tech.
He talked about how he cha the skins to a smoke colour, but nobody noticed because of how dark the stage was.
    His drumming is so unorthodox.
Dir en grey is just unorthodox, they come in at odd times, their dynamics are strange and totally subvert any expectations. And Shinya is key to that... Such a confusing drummer, and incredibly skilled. Often overlooked, and dismissed as "simplistic" even though he's anything but...

I think it's because he really isn't a 'western type' metal drummer, like he doesn't do anything that people outside Japan would expect from a metal drummer. When I started to play drums and watched tons of metal drummers I started to think: Yeah...Shinya is not that good actually. Just because I started to build this expectation of what drumming patterns would fit a certain song etc. But the better I became the more I noticed his genius and how much his drumming actually makes Dir en grey sound so different from every other band.
And Shinya is so hilarious! His channel was the best thing Covid created - I mean he always never talks in interviews and we knew so little about him and all the time he was hiding such an engaging and fun personality.
Btw. the guy who filmed the drum kit tour is Kenji Fujieda, he is part of their management team since 2019 but also was Shinya's drum tech around the time they toured with UROBOROS.
That video had me laugh so hard - same with his 11 year project video [if you haven't watched that one: I highly recommend you do so whenever you need a really good laugh. Just thinking about that video makes my eyes water 😂]

Glass Skin (2008) was the first new single that Dir en grey released after I discovered them and became a massive fan, so that single holds a special place in my heart and I'm glad to see your reaction! On nearly every new single (and bonus cd to every new album) since 2007, Dir en grey has included either an acustic remake or a full on remake of one of their older songs, on Glass Skin they remade their song 'Undecided' as an acoustic version. The unplugged version of Undecided is my favorite acoustic remake they have done, here is a live version of the acoustic remake of Undecided with subtitles if you want to react to another less agressive song by Dir en grey. ua-cam.com/video/tBM75O5yY0U/v-deo.html

Trickster Shinya, covering himself. Passio has a point though. If not the whole band is present, then it can't be said it's the Dir en grey themselves, even though an actual member is playing the "cover".
Hey, i'm late to the party! I revisited the whole playlists of Dir en grey and Sukekiyo, who made me notice your channel. The other fans did a great job dragging you onto our fan-train.
I appreciate the effort to have actual commentary on the reactions. And no, the pausing is not too much. At least you do it because you have something to say, not like others "welp, the band plays, moving on"
I noticed you've done more Japanese band, but you're missing the most interesting one - Wagakki band. I don't know if it was suggested before, and you still couldn't find the time, but count me a vote with two hands. I won't say the usual suggestions, but i think it's stil a proper one.
"Kyoka suigetsu" + "Tsukini sakebu yoru" tied pretty well here ua-cam.com/video/aWlMc-pbDc8/v-deo.html This channel provide subtitles (in the menu), for possible future explorement.
P.S. Shinya have a solo project called SERAPH.

Since you are interesting in drums can I suggest reacting to their song "Rinkaku"? I'm not a drummer myself and Shinya keeps mentioning that this song is especially difficult to play so I would like to know more about it :) Thank you Smitty!

Unless you recognise his face, it's not strange that you didn't know it was him. I don't think native speakers would call it a cover when they play their own songs? But he has some cool videos, would be fun to see you react to another now that you know who he is :)

I see in the comments that others have let you know that Shinya is a nerd who ‘covers’ his own songs lol 😂 He takes a LOT of inspiration from Yoshiki of X Japan (who also produced Dir en grey’s major debut album Gauze!) They both prioritize the visual as much as the sound, which makes it a very difficult style to replicate. If you’re interested in seeing more visual kei or Japanese metal musicians doing drum covers, you should check out Kanta from DEVILOOF on his channel! He doesn’t have subtitles but his drumming videos are really interesting - he plays some of his own band’s songs but also covers a lot of western music too with a really animated and energetic style: m.ua-cam.com/channels/HqXpnUOrCOCqdB7LLSwpAQ.html
