Hi guys long time that I don't leave a comment for you guys to read if I had a choice I will get this one and I will wait for the updates I'll tell you why because every day I turn on my TV my computer my phone anything the first thing I do to check for updates so I'll be okay waiting for the updates because honestly it'll be worth it for that price would be worth it for me honestly can I get away with it when not bringing what they promise all the time with me no but I will give him I will give him a chance if it delivers a good first audio experience right out the box if you know what I mean so yeah the whole update thing there's some days I don't get update to my phone anyway I guess that's the future for companies am I proud of it no but I guess that's the future that we live in right now is we had to wait for updates anyways love you guys and God bless have a great day guys love you so much guys see you on the next one
Hi Guys. Absolutely love everything you say. Plus your sick awesome sense of humor. People are asking, what movie was playing during your receiver smack down at the end? Military, badass female cars, sand. Looks like a good one to Flex audio and video. But I couldn't place it. Thanks so much and keep being your wonderful selves. 🍻🙏🏾
This year thanks to Andrew and Kristi, I purchased the Onkyo RZ 50, the Polk R700s, the SVS Micro 3000, (yes used all their links to show support and so should you) and have not regretted one recommendation! Enough said!
@@andrewrobinsonreviews You guys are the best and people don’t realize how hard it is to do what the two of you do. So nothing wrong with giving a little help.
Bought also the Rz50 and I am on my way to buy a subwyand two new left and right channel speakers, looking for 8000f or I wishhhhhh they could review the monolith encore T6 loudspeaker they deserve way more attention then they receive
I've had the yamaha rxa6a for a few weeks and I'm completely thrilled. I had the yamaha rxa2040 for years and it was good, but what the rxa6a can do in terms of sound is worlds apart. i run a 9.1 setup and i always wanted this quality. all updates that yamaha promised were delivered. there are no problems with hdmi 2.1 or other technical failures. ps5 and xbox seriesx run fine. your review of the yamaha rxa6a back then wouldn't be the same today and your new review would amaze you. all denon owners have fun with it,
I just purchased the Denon X3800H, and I couldn't be happier. Dolby Atmos is working like a dream and the sound is rich, warm, and makes movie-watching a wonderful experience. It will be upgradable for DIRAC sometime in early 2023. But for now, Audyssey's MultEQ sounds pretty freakin' awesome in my home theater setup!
Crunchy highs = dealbreaker (for me). I can’t tell you enough just how much I value Kristi’s impressions and the way she communicates! She’s so direct and it speaks right to me. Thanks to you both!
X3800h was a hassle free replacement for my old denon 3311ci. I needed 4k. After running room adaptation I can hear voices much better on the x3800h. The setup was super easy and fast. Also I can use 1 Apple TV remote to control everything so the harmony system is in the trash! Really like the simplicity of that.
I like how you put the title of the video or game that is being shown. I find that I keep watching your reviews even though I am not in the market for the products. Andrews style of presentation and the banter between him and Kristi is great. You two are doing a killer job of these reviews.
Thanks for your review ! I have the RZ50 and the X3800H and love both of them for movies and music !! I have only one issue with the RZ50 which is HDMI handshake with my Fios cable box and Apple TV 4K.It takes a minute or so to get connected. No issues with the X3800H so far.
Still no buyer's remorse with my purchase of the Onkyo TX-RZ50. The negative impression for stereo music listening on the X3800H is what would have prevented me most from purchasing it. On a side note, despite me enjoying the Onkyo...I actually found my Yamaha TSR-700 (RX--V6A) A LOT easier to tweak than the Onkyo. I'm still filling lost on all the options I have with Dirac Live on the Onkyo. Definitely diverse and respected perspectives abound on these AVRs. Keep up the good work!
How are you liking it so far? I just purchased the x4800 to replace my 14 year old Yamaha. I'm anxiously waiting to see if I made the right decisions. lol. it comes tomorrow
@@jerameyregimbald2137 It is leagues above my ONKYO. Better build quality. Digital integration is far superior. Handshakes are almost seamless. Audio is way more transparent with no distortion. Im getting steady 4k 120hz with no noticeable drawbacks on the passthrough. The only thing i would change is that it doesn't include Dirac Live, like my onkyo did.
Got a RZ50 2 Weeks ago and replaced it with a Denon 4800...got both receivers for about the same price. I've got to say that just for music, the onkyo sounded better and it's true that the soundstage felt much larger on the onkyo. But with Movies or games the Denon is way better. Not to mention that the denon can handle 4 subs separately, has auro and overall has more options/customization. I like both receivers though
Any chance you can review the AVR-X4800H? For close to $1000 more than the 3800h, with nearly the same specs, it would be great to see where that extra cost was put, and why you would choose the 4800H over the 3800H, if at all. Apparently the components are better, with a better DAC in the 4800. Can you hear the difference though? I think a lot of people would be interested in knowing. Thanks!
@@rushgush yeah, this can be an expensive hobby. For most people, most of this stuff doesn't matter. For some, it does. I actually bought the x4800 shortly after I made that comment.i heard the 4800h had much better amps, than the 3800. I still hooked it up to an amp. My 5 bed layers are being powered by the amp and the AVR is powering the 4 height channels. I still can't find many people reviewing it. It seems like a pretty good receiver. I just don't know how it compares to others.
@jerameyregimbald2137 I have bright speakers and am afraid of pairing them with bright sounding 3800h. The Cinema 50 may be a better match. May I ask if you bought the 4800h due to a difference in sound over 3800h?
@@gurjantm I have klipsch speakers currently. When I used Audyssey the speakers didn't seem bright at all. When I used Dirac, They became clearer, more dynamic, with better separation, but they are a lot brighter. I'm going to play around with it to see if I can fix it. I love everything about how DIRAC W/ Multi Sub bass control changed the sound of my speakers, except for making them sound to bright. Some audio sounds very harsh at louder volumes. I applied a Harmon curve to my Dirac filter, and that helped, but I feel like I can do more. The reason I went with the 4800h over the 3800, was the better components. The X4800H has 32-bit processing (called AL32 and HD32 by Denon) which is supposed to provide more precision when processing the audio signal, I believe, and a better AMP. I got myself an Emotiva AMP and I'm running my 5 bed layer speakers through it. I notice no difference in sound quality, or tonality when hooked up to the amp. I do notice it sounds better when I turn it up though, more so than when it was just the AVR. I knew eventually I was going to get this amp, and another one down the road, and eventually use this as a processor only. Also with the addition of the component video input, I thought the 4800 was a better option for me. I never had the 3800, so I don't know if my reasoning is correct. I doubt most people would notice a difference, and aside from occasional switching issues I have, I love the 4800.Unless you need the extras like component video, 1 extra HDMI, extra triggers, more zones, and 20 extra watts the 3800 is the better option for the price. Also, if you don't have the speakers, or the ears, to notice the subtle differences between the two audibly, you're better off getting the 3800, I imagine.
Well... "ive heard" that the Marantz and Denon is coming out of the same factory for most of the components. I must say I am very impressed that you guys can hear such clear differences between these products. Not sure what to say about that.
I love the simplicity of Denon. Having said that, a refresh wouldn't hurt, a simple external and font update could bring over some more customers. I'm looking at the next model up. Switching brands is tough. I've been a "Denon guy" for 30 years. I hate the portal of Mirantz and I never cared for Onkiyo sound, especially in a 2.0/2.1 channel. I come from the big analog systems of the 70's. My Dad had nice systems. So a bit warmer is always better, imo. The Denon drawback is DIY firmwares. I don't mind so much, if it's updating or upgrading later on, but not waiting for a FW update on a brand new system. I agree finish it.
i am using Denon amps and receivers since 35 yrs and i updated my old models with new Denon Products (2023-2024 models)..I can say if you care about details Denon is the best...(Best models starts after 3000 series)
I have loved these last few reviews but keep getting confirmation that my choice to trust your recommendation of the Onkyo RZ-50 earlier this year was the right choice. Promising features in the future is not the same as including them at launch, and the RZ-50 just looks more robust and powerful, which i enjoy.
I just listened to the Cinema 50 and X3800 back to back at my local Magnolia store with B&W 600 and 800 series speakers. The two receivers sound exactly the same. Exactly. There is zero difference. The X4800 (which sounds exactly like the Cinema 40) did sound better to me than the X3800.
Agree. I did an A/B test at Best Buy and found the exact same thing using KEF R3 Metas. Also compared the C60 and the x4800. The salesperson told me that he heard a difference ... if it was there, it was subtle and not a decision maker. What WAS remarkably better was the Arcam AVR11. I was shocked that it was clearly better but I wouldn't buy it due to reliability concerns I read of on line.
Great review as always. One of the big differences here on the 3800 over its predecessors is that in pre out mode, you can select only the channels you want. Previous models you had all channels or none.
When You Know Your Stuff, You Know Your Stuff! 😁I consider myself an audiophile, I currently own a Marantz SR8012 which I completely respect. It has taken me many, many nights to tune it to my sound taste and I believe it has finally paid off (however, unlike your wife Kristi and my wife, I love doing this stuff 😅). Prior to getting my Marantz SR8012, I listened to many different A/V receiver brands and models, and I could not agree more on ALL OF THE COMMENTS AND HUGE ASSISTANCE that you're giving through these videos because it is simply putted: AMAZING AND SUPER HELPFUL. Thank you so much for creating PROFESSIONAL, FUN, and SUPER INFORMATIVE content on this subject as it TOTALLY MAKES A DIFFERENCE when someone is about to spend $,$$$.$$ + TIME on the heart of it all, an A/V receiver. I will continue to follow your videos and even consider joining the membership soon. THANK YOU! 😃
Thanks for the review! It's so hard to beat the RZ-50 for the price. Looking forward to your upcoming budget ARV review you mentioned. The 3000 series was always the sweet spot in the Denon line up...until the RZ-50 stormed in and said "this is my place now".
I always love your videos Andrew. Thank you for having a calming presence in my life by presenting these, even if I can't afford many of these. I've been using the same audio set up for the last 14 years, hoping to get a new one when I turn 45 in 3 years. If I tuck away like $100 a month from now till then for it I could build something sweet I bet.
So I had the RZ50 and it’s a good receiver. Just not my cup of tea so I sold it and got the x3800. I like it way better. The sound is much more punchy on the Denon and the great Dirac/Audisey debate is not even that for me as I didn’t think Dirac was all that on the rz50. Now full disclosure I have own Denon for over 35 years and maybe it’s just the placebo effect, but then in, that’s just my go to av receiver. Still I agree with you , Andrew it should have gotten the needed firmware updates before launch as I had major HDMI issues before doing 2 updates before I could even start the setup progress .
I have had 2 Onkyo Integra AVR’s. Both HDMI boards died. That, and their previous other issues, make Onkyo a no go. I’m not taking another chance with them. I purchased the 4700, and I am pleased. Yea, they have an “old” look, but mine sits out of the way in a gear closet, so I never see it. It does everything I need, and more. Thanks for another great and informative review.
Of all the features AVR's have, how it looks is by far the least important. I want the most reliability, then modern codecs, the latest HDMI, and options/pre-outs. Looks and legacy RCA connectors (including TT) is completely unimportant to me.
I really appreciate Kristy's "normal person" take in these reviews. Andrew: There's different pros and cons, I can't decide what is better for you. Kristy: It's Marantz.
I have an ONKYO NR717 bought back in 2014 and it has served me well for music and movies. I am 75 and I get a lot of enjoyment from my 5.1 ONKYO system, NVidea Shield and Sony 4k TV but my system does not have the newest sound capabilities. In addition, the Onkyo does not have 4k capability so I have to use an HDMI vidio/audio splitter to get sound to the AV receiver and 4k video from the NVidea Shield to the TV. All in all, my system clearly is in need of an update and I follow all your weekly posts with high interest in the new AV Recievers you have reviewed this year. The DIRAC LIVE Room Correction is the cherry on top and the Onkyo RZ50 is my current pick. Unfortunately, I can't afford this upgrade this year and have set late Spring for my update. Your Atmos speaker install inspired me and I hope to add 4 ceiling speakers next year too. So, thank you for your insights from both of you for you are clearly reaching your audience with timely and well thought out equipment reviews.
I chose Onkyo, I really wanted the rz50 but picked the nr7100 as it is $700 less (in Canada) and so far its great. I'm keeping an eye on the rz50 and if it goes on sale for Black friday I might just get it because I do want pre-outs to get 7.1.4 but other than that the 7100 works perfect.
If we're considering less than £1,000 (sorry, I deal with gbp) as budget, then Denon are unbeatable in the budget range as far as my experience goes. Went from a Pioneer as my first unit (which included speaker set), picked up an Onkyo when wanting something capable of 4K passthrough. Had issues with the unit when it came to the bluetooth. The indicator light flashed intermittently and if turned off it wouldn't turn back on. Got a replacement and it had the same issues. Resorted to not turning off the bluetooth. Just recently picked up a Denon for HDMI 2.1 and ALLM support and it has been perfect. Affordable price and it has network features which the Onkyo didn't including automatic firmware updates. No issues that I've noticed. Intuitive UI. Sound is great. Or at least, no worse than the Onkyo was. Still using the speaker set that came with the pioneer. Those satellite speakers can put it out enough to stop me from considering any full range sets. Did pick up a separate Yamaha sub though, as the original Pioneer one used a different connection.
The X3800H has support for 11.4. In fact, it can do 5.4.6 unlike the RZ50 and have Auro 3D. Also looks like you can assign whichever pre-out for the external amp unlike the RZ50 which only allows the rear surrounds for 11 ch. Still, I agree the RZ50 is still a better value even at the new $1600 price which includes the Dirac and most people in the USA would be perfectly happy with it. But the X3800H maybe a better buy for those who want a bit more options with their speaker setup. And competition is always good for this market.
Love your help with all this technology!!!!! Last week I bought the Marantz NR1200 based on your review... strictly for 2 channel stereo, not our Main system but maybe most frequently used based on its location. We are very very pleased Andrew! The technology is amazing and I am hearing streaming music better than ever... Cd and turntable very good too... and it looks great. Bluetooth my phone well too. Thank you for all you do!!! I even found a new one on sale!! Way below the 799!!! So I really feel good about it.
Holy shit Andrew called me out big time. I skipped to the Onky Rz50 portion and immediately got called out for it 😂 that's actually hilarious. FINE...I'll start back at the beginning! You win this round, Andrew
Both denon and Marantz have identical circuits. I have the schematics for both. Now, the new Marantz units, definitely way up there. I have an SR7008 and it’s absolutely amazing. Had a pioneer elite ICE power, broke down I. 2 years. Sound no way as nice as my Marantz. Your evaluations are just spot on.
I think a lot of people would be curious to know if the sound signatures you experienced using the internal power were the same using an external amp??? The appeal of these receivers is leaning more and more towards their ability to function as a processor as well.
I am with Kristi on this one... while eagle ears can start to pick apart the nuances in sound across AVRs, at least 50% of my preference comes from the UI. While the Denon gets buggy at times, the UI is so easy to learn... perfect for enthusiasts who have family members who aren't! lol
This is what I thought too. There is a German blog, where they actually did randomized blind test with very experienced HiFi enthusiasts. Two of them owned High End HiFi shops. They tried primarily cables (spoiler: they could not spot the difference) but they also compared a 650€ Arcam AVR with a 6500€ Stereo amp with an external Power supply (50kg or 100 pounds total of amplification.) They could not here a difference. I think, if the amp is well built, you will not here a difference. The difference you will hear, if you know what is playing, has more to do with the apearence of the devices and the resulting believe/placebo.
Thanks for the video, another great one. Keep in mind that the x3800h can be setup in full pre-amp mode and now you'll have a $1699 pre/pro...Plus the sound can be vastly improved by using the new Audyssey MultEQ-X software tool. It's a little pricey at $199.99 but it gives you advanced control and functionality to really tailor your sound and improve your room's shortcomings.
No way to pay $200 for SW tool you can't migrate yourself between the machines. With Sound United moving towards the Dirac, Audyssey is effectively dead imo.
I like the looks of Denon. The display is easier to read and it’s functional. Much better than the Marantz and Yamaha. I can’t stand the volume knob in the center if the Yamahas.
And who cares when you have 10 grand worth of speakers if your receiver has a “distorted high end, or crappy highs” like I don’t think any real human will notice the difference
Good morning guys ! Loved my Onkyos as I have owned 3 of their top receivers but they all stopped working and are doorstops now. My Denon AVR-X4400H is still fully functional and sounds great using an Emotiva XPA5 amplifier. Wanting Dirac and 4k 120hz for gaming so still unsure what to upgrade to. Thanks for the comparisons and all the work that you and Kristi do! ❤️👏
Curious if your opinion has changed now, nearly a year later with the firmware updates et al. I’m on the market and have been leaning towards the x3800h. Full transparency, this AVR can be had for $999 these days which makes it quite attractive.
Yeah man, in the Netherlands you can get one for less than €900, it's still a hefty price for audio, but if you're an audiophile and see these specs, it makes it one of the best valued receivers atm imo. If I wanted another Sony receiver capable of at least Dolby Atmos and all HDMI 2.1 features it would cost me about the same or more but has like 0 features compared to this Denon...
When my marantz preamp went down and was being diagnosed by the repair shop, didnt know if it would be covered by warranty. This unit would have been a serious consideration as a dedicated replacement preamp as prices have gone up, and id hate to buy a new Marantz at current prices. Thankfully, it all worked out for me with no additional costs. Great review as always.
I'm not in the market for an avr, and I've never seriously considered onkyo, but the rz50 seems like a solid product. This 3800 and rz50 would be on the shopping list.
I just bought the denon x3800h mainly because of multiple sub support as i have more than 1 subwoofer plus i had a best buy gift card and only paid 1085 compare to 4800h which was on sale as well but after my gift card it would have been about 1500 and it is not worth it for that price difference for minor differences between them i am happy with my purchase
I have always matched my denon receivers with B&W speakers. Have had the 700 series for over a decade now. I headed them being matched with Keff sleakers, but the sound is really different. Really agressive in the highs. I feel that with the B&W speakers the sound denon puts out is just perfect for my taste. I also should mention, that sound is personal. So this is just my opinion.
My set up for the last decade has been a Denon AVR-1712 powering a Martin Logan MLT-2 5.1 speaker system. I upgraded to a 4K TV and decided to upgrade my receiver to one with 4k/120 pass-through. I bought and sampled a Denon S970H, a Denon X-2800H, and a Sony STR/AN-1000 during Black Friday sales, only to discover that they all sounded crappy, especially for music, compared to my existing AVR-1712 that I bought for $300 in 2012. I ultimately returned them all and am sticking with my old receiver for now. Two questions: (1) why has the sound quality declined so much with newer more expensive receivers? (2) what new receiver would you recommend for less than $2k that actually sounds good?
If you can, I would save up and get an Anthem MRX line of receivers. An Anthem MRX 540 receiver is not cheap, but it will probably get you a better sound with Anthem's room correction. But then I do not own that receiver. I for one would like to go with separates with an Anthem AVM70 or AVM90 and the AVM90 has better DAC than AVM70. By "separates," you will want an external amplifier. What you can do is get something like a BAS-X 5-channel amplifier if your AVR-1712 has pre-outs, but I did some research and your receiver does not have pre-outs at all for connecting to an external amplifier. I hope I can be of help. Good luck on your home theater journey.
I don't really understand the "love" for Dirac and "hate" for Audessey. With a bit more money (for the paid app or license) and a bit of time investment, Audessey can sound great. Very close to Dirac. But Dirac lacks the two features that for those of us living with families or/and in apartments, make watching movies and listening to music much more fun. 1. The Dynamic Volume - dynamic range compressions for movies. 2. Dynamic EQ - loudness for music and movies. When there is no option/will to listen at reference level, those two are lifesavers.
For what it's worth, Marantz has a reputation among many of having a "warm" character to its sound while Denon is more neutral. Regardless, Andrew, I'm curious of whether the Denon's sound is attributable to it's preamp section or its amp section or a combo of the two? Audio Science Review (I think I got that correct) indicated the preamp section of the 3800 was inferior to the 3700 version. Finally, my issue with the Onkyo is its sub outputs aren't independent of one another. Thus, Dirac's bass correction (i.e. the more advanced separate module) is somewhat neutered whereas the Denon has 4 independent subwoofer outs. However, the estimated price for Dirac on the Denon and Marantz is crazy expensive relative to its current selling price.
As for myself, after 3 years with Denon x3500h, I am still not satisfied with the stereo reproduction. I am willing to make a switch and will audition Marantz cinema line soon. The reason also is, that for me it is also about the design. So e.g. no chance I would ever touch an Onkyo 🙂
It’s probably psychological, but I love pretty much everything Marantz makes and have just never been able to get into Denon products. I imagine their higher-end stuff is amazing, based on reviews, but I’ve never had a chance to listen to it. I will absolutely be saving up to buy the Cinema 50 over this one.
Love your channel and reviews!! Really enjoy getting Kristi's take each time as well!! Was anxious for your review of the X3800H. Back ordered one from a local retailer recently, so still waiting. Almost cancelled after watching your review. However, I cannot source the RZ50 locally. You mentioned "Had Denon waited for all of the software and bugs to be worked out first, it may have been an outright great one"... Does this mean it might have topped the RZ50 if the HDMI switching bugs weren't present and Dirac was already included? I will not listen at really loud volumes, so should not have the distortion and just TV/Movies so will avoid the stereo disappointment.
For anyone knowing they are going to add an amplifier for 2-ch audio use its extremely important that they know the Denon is one of the only receivers that offer an internal amplifier disconnect so the receiver can be used as a true pre/pro. This huge. I might also mention that 3 independent sub channels is extremely important for folks using multiple subs. For certain people under certain circumstances this receiver is the clear choice. However for most folks not so much.
Is that crunchiness in the high end coming from the DA converters or the amp? Did you test the sound with just the pre outs to a separate amplifier and wondering if that improved the sound of the high end?
I sold a Denon reciever in the early 2000s to buy a Yamaha with fancy digital switching and a bunch of pre-out flexibility. Things haven't changed. The Denon sounded better. But 20 years later, I still use this Yamaha.
I'm pretty glad I stayed away from Denon this go around. I was going to go Onkyo RZ50 but availability wasn't there and I got a good deal on the Yamaha RX-A4A. It's been great.
Shouldn't the Denon X3800h be compared to the Onkyo TX-NR7100 rather then the Onkyo RZ50? I don't know about pricing in the states, I live in Sweden and the x3800h and the tx-nr7100 is priced neck to neck here and the RZ50 is an additional 200$. If choosing from the x3800h and the tx-nr7100, what would be your pick?
Hey I just took the NR7100 back and bought the X3800H. There is a noticeable difference in sound quality hands down! X3800h should be compared to the RZ50 and even then on sound quality it’s a noticeable difference. Trust me.
Denon X3800H would be my choice. Full set of preouts and 4 subwoofers. But in the US the 7100 is priced around $1,200 retail and the RZ50 retails around $1,600. The X3800H is the same price as the RZ50.
Potential is def there. I'd love to see it with its full promised feature set and the real advantages it will have. I would definitely re-visit this denon or Marantz near end of 2023, or even early 2024 when they get the Dirac Bass Management 2nd update.
I have a Denon 6700 and I haven't seen anything in these new offerings from Sound United that would make me move off of it, except maybe the new Denon A1 and Marantz A10 preamp, but those are 6 and 7 thousand dollars. I will say that the four independent subs are tempting, but I don't even have 4 subs. As for Denon's s looks, I've never liked the styling of the 3X and lower models, but I'm still disappointed that they haven't changed anything. These days though, I'm not sure question is which model is best for you, but which is available.
I was all set to get the Onkyo RZ50 until heard and read that the two sub woofers out were not independent of each other. So what would be next choice. Yous do great reviews and comparisons. Thank You Both
I dealt with 3 Onkyos, they all stopped woking properly, hdmi, dolby handshakes, rear channels out, weird stuff, ect... I looked online about these issues tons of people making the same comments and saying they also saw such issues with all the Onkyos they dealt with. I can't even consider Onkyo... Not even for 75% off, it's not happening, no. Maybe they've redeemed themselves but the trauma remains and it's not going anywhere.
I love Denon as a brand. Their higher end SACD players are exceptional, I love the PMA-800NE in my library which gives a beautifully rich, warm, clear tone, and I really wish they'd release a 4K disc player as my 3313 UDP is just outstanding. But. But I cannot stand their AV receivers. I've owned three, hated two of the three, and couldn't live with the heat sink that was the third (an otherwise beautiful X5200 in silver). Their receivers are so ugly, and I cannot find any excitement in their cinema experience - they've always left me cold. For my money, it's Arcam that lead the way, I love everything about the looks, the immediate and accurate change of inputs, and oh, that sound....
I've historically been a marantz man, but given the large price difference between similar denon and marantz models this is the one to get, and I bet this'll be one of the better selling models.
RZ50 £1,499 for me, Denon 3800H £899 getting the 3800H, 4800H is out at £1,499 would be a better comparison for the cost but for simple costings, 3800 + £500 to spare will do me!! :-)
i have the x1700h and it's great, like really great in a mid-sized room. I bought the x3800h for a larger room and to get the full Atmos experience. The sound is actually not as good as the x1700h. I listened to the x2800h also and that was really not nice sounding. I'm glad I bought the x3800h and it works well to drive all the speakers. But like I said before the x1700h I think is the unsung hero. Its truly brilliant for price to performance
OMG! Your timing is incredible! I've been shopping this week to upgrade to a 5.1.4, future ready. This is the one I was really wanting your opinion on before getting it, or the Onkyo TX-RZ50! Thank you so freaking much!
That's awesome! A great way to give back is by using one of our links provided to you in the description. The cost to you doesn't change but we'll earn a small amount. :)
If you're only using 2 subs in the front of your room and they are both equal distance from your listening position, do independent sub outputs matter then? Trying to decide if this is a make or break issue for my particular situation. I'm thinking not.
@@GlennMcKeon-n5sI guess there would a sort of cheat way for independent controls if you don’t have that feature, but it’s not ideal. When you do manual setup you turn off the opposite subwoofer set the level and distance. Then turn that one off and turn the other one on then adjust the gain on the other sub until it matches the same output of the other sub. Then turn them both on. Like I said, it’s not ideal but it would probably work to get somewhat balanced output from both subs. Might have to run the setup again once the gains are set on both subs to match each others outputs. The receiver may turn them down from what it originally was at since it thinks there is one sub when there is actually two.
Guys, loved the soundstage box graphic! If that’s at all representative of what you heard, then it’s a very useful reference for comparison. HOWEVER, for AV receivers it would be much more useful to present the same info with DRC engaged, since that’s how 99% of users will listen. After all, it’s conceivable that Audyssey could mitigate the soundstage deficiencies of this unit. In fact, the engineers might have phoned it in on soundstage for precisely that reason.
So I listened very carefully to Andrew 3 x 😂and went ahead with this AV. For home theater it’s a massive upgrade to SR7009. It’s quite sensational actually. For music however is totally lacking. It’s very poor compared to SR7009. But I love 2 channel listening and I have an Eversolo DMP-A6 which I found amazing analogue in pure direct with this AV. As Andrew says there’s a bit of extra bass in the Denon and it helps me not to miss a sub on pure direct. Thanks Andrew. This review helped me make the right choice.
Let me get this correct. You say the Denon is sensationel for home theater but totally lacking for music and event though you love 2 channel listening you still find this as the right choice? Please enlighten me...
@@supergrissi because of the Denon neutral sound profile and extra bass you can use your own streaming DAC and enjoy 2 channel listening via RCA. (HDMI will use the Denon DAC). I have an eversolo with a linear power supply installed. It's very pure and very clean.
I love your guys reviews and I have loved stereo stuff since my early teens. With that said I never became an audiophile. I honestly don't know if my ears would/could hear the differences. My current AVR is Denon S940H which I've had for several years. Thanks for what you do!
i believe some of the upper treble behaviour might be on account of the available power and Arendals combination. They are a bit hard to drive and 105 w divided is going to be on the lower side. This is probably why they offer a good and well designed pre out for all channels. I have been selling and installing Denon, Marantz and Integra, ( until they left us out to dry a few years back!) for almost 20 yrs. I hear you! Very much in agreement.
@@KristiWright Yeah, I've seen in 100 videos so far but it had a different scale today. I think it may have been a shot down the middle. You guys are killing it! Great stuff!
Always interesting. Thanks for your takes on these receivers. Terrible leaving with that cliff hanger about there being another... Yoda. Enjoy the holidays guys. Cheers
My experience with Yamaha has not been good - got a refund in mine b/c of defective 2.1 boards and waiting for firmware that never came. That being said, why would I ever invest in a Denon doing the same thing? Nope - Onkyo was ready to rock right out of the box. With Dirac built in - no upcharge, no waiting. Hands down still the best 9.2 receiver on the market.
Yes. Free Dirac Live on the RZ50. No Dirac on the Denon, yet, PLUS they are going to charge you even more on top what the x3800h costs? I love my Onkyo TX-RZ50.
@@JollyGiant1213 I'm with you brother - had Denon, Yamaha RX-A6A ( hated this one - and I feel bad cause I used to love Yamaha receivers ) but Onkyo batted this out of the park - only thing missing is independent subwoofer control - but that's it. For the price it just can't be beat. And no HDMI issues that many have stated they had in the past.
I currently have and use the Denon X4000, and what you described the X3800H sounds like, fully sounds like the X4000... Not to mention that the two of them are almost identical in looks. This being said, Denon needs to step up their game beyond features alone, which after hearing your video, their lacking there as well. Honestly, how much has any brand changed sonically over the years? Each price bracket seems to be a rehash of the previous years, and only a feature or two upgrade from time to time... This is where the stereo stores held a place in the world . We could at least listen before we sunk, or sink a large sum into a product, that hasn't changed much really in years. I personally am looking for the leaps in improvements, rather than the slight stumbles.
Andrew, first off... Another great review. Thank you both for the time and especially the honesty you put into your reviews. I can't say this is strong enough terms. Your channel is my "go to". The question I have is, do you think the issues with two channel playback on the Denon is due to the amplification? I ask this because I'll be using whichever new AV receiver I buy with high end external amplification.
You do a good job of describing the differences between the Marantz and Denon house sounds. Although I haven't had a million of each so I couldn't speak to that. I have had several of each- both integrated & receivers, and a would say Marantz is a bit laid back compared to Denon. Denon seems leaner in the mid- range- some cases sounded a little thin. Not criticism. Either could work in systems matched to their characters and work well. All to say that you confirmed in some of you describe what I have experienced.
You both once again deliver a review better then anything else out there. Appreciate all the info, and if someone cannot decided on a receiver in this line of AVR after this, they never will.
I am not a fan of receivers. They generally can be decent all around units but getting separates that focus on being great at one thing is better. My NAD 658 preamp for example, the phono pre is ok for MM cartridges but when I purchased the Parasound XRM for a couple hundred dollars, the improvements in volume, clear detail and full sound was significant. So now there is one part of my preamp that i paid for which I don't use anymore. With a receiver, you can find upgrades amps, preamps, DAC's and you will prefer in time and then you end up getting rid of your receiver
You are a 1%'er my friend, those who want the best sound. The AVR's are for the rest of us who are two percenters. those who want the best sound within a budget. Nothing wrong with either.
I have the Sony 5000es, and have the Denon x4800H coming. The sound of the receiver has everything to do with the speakers your running, period! The Sony seems a little bright with my Martin Logan Electrostats. My Pioneer SC-97 was a perfect fit, but the sound chip or something is failing. It's hit ir miss if i get any sound anymore. So i need a receiver that matches up with the Electrostats.

is there a difference in sound quality between the s760h and the x3700h?
This year thanks to Andrew and Kristi, I purchased the Onkyo RZ 50, the Polk R700s, the SVS Micro 3000, (yes used all their links to show support and so should you) and have not regretted one recommendation! Enough said!
We sincerely appreciate you doing that, Alan!

do u still have ur tx-rz50, do u still like it I just got one 2 week s ago
Can’t go wrong with it as a entry into the HT world. It holds its weight in the more lower end AVRs.

I just got the denon avr-x4800h to replace my ONKYO. All i can say is , where have u been all my life Denon!
Thanks!
all that money for garbage amps. and then u look at just processors. and the price is just as absurd.
@jerameyregimbald2137
I have bright speakers and am afraid of pairing them with bright sounding 3800h.
@jerameyregimbald2137 hi do you think it is sufficient to run Dirac Live with the provided mic from the receiver box?
Great advice on that review!
At the original price of $1400 the RZ50 was impossible to beat for value. Now that it is at $1600, it is a bit harder to say.
For the price, I agree the Onkyo RZ50 offers more for the same price. Support for 11.2 comes to mind. A bit more power. Plus Dirac live!
They tried primarily cables (spoiler: they could not spot the difference) but they also compared a 650€ Arcam AVR with a 6500€ Stereo amp with an external Power supply (50kg or 100 pounds total of amplification.)
They could not here a difference.
I think, if the amp is well built, you will not here a difference. The difference you will hear, if you know what is playing, has more to do with the apearence of the devices and the resulting believe/placebo.
The X3800 should be compared with the marantz cinema 60 which is similarly priced. Comparing it to a receiver that's $800 dollars more is unfair
When I upgrade my old Yamaha, I can’t afford to make a mistake, and your reviews are very helpful. Thank you.
Glad you find them helpful Edward!
Hey Andrew, so in Movies do you like the Marantz or the Denon more?
@@bigcwastaken2112 Not if your nit A/Bing the two. Your ears tend to adjust to a different sound.
Glad to hear it all worked out!
Me too, trust me!! Saved Christmas
I'm not in the market for an avr, and I've never seriously considered onkyo, but the rz50 seems like a solid product. This 3800 and rz50 would be on the shopping list.
The RZ50 is very solid in our experience!
Please review the X2800H model, maybe comparing it to the X2700H. Thanks!
I'm not one of the one's typing about Arcam but thanks to Kristi for still trying to get Arcam to come through.
Bought the Onkyo RZ 50 and could not be happier.
I'm considering the RZ 50 along with the others mentioned here. Your independent endorsement is helpful. 👍
Four independent sub outs. If you know how unique this is, it’s on a very short list.
4800 should be compared to the other three based on price I have two Denon and both have been solid
The Denon has 4 discrete sub woofer outputs and that alone puts it over the Onkyo for me
For anyone knowing they are going to add an amplifier for 2-ch audio use its extremely important that they know the Denon is one of the only receivers that offer an internal amplifier disconnect so the receiver can be used as a true pre/pro.
Can you review the DENON AVR-X4800H and compare it other mid range AVR?
In Germany the rz50 is even more than 50 % more expensive (X3800H sub 1000€ vs RZ50 more than 1500 €).
Hey I just took the NR7100 back and bought the X3800H. There is a noticeable difference in sound quality hands down! X3800h should be compared to the RZ50 and even then on sound quality it’s a noticeable difference. Trust me.
@@devonlewis2372glad to hear you say that because I just took the NR-7100 back and got the X3800H
@@Crowleywild trust me. It’s better by all means. Paid the extra and it’s worth it. Especially being able to run 7.4.4. Need an external amp though
RE: 4 subs - you might not need them. For our purposes, we rarely even use two because one sub is more than enough.
I was all set to get the Onkyo RZ50 until heard and read that the two sub woofers out were not independent of each other. So what would be next choice. Yous do great reviews and comparisons.
Thank You Both
This is my new favorite avr of the year
I dealt with 3 Onkyos, they all stopped woking properly, hdmi, dolby handshakes, rear channels out, weird stuff, ect...
I think on sound quality parameters Yamaha is best with most transparent clean sparkling (not bright) sound. Female vocals sound best on Yamaha.
Qual você indica? Pioneer lx505 ou denon x3800 obrigado
I've historically been a marantz man, but given the large price difference between similar denon and marantz models this is the one to get, and I bet this'll be one of the better selling models.
If you're going to be using either as a preamp/processor, the Denon is maybe the better buy, especially if you're a fan of multiple subwoofers.
That new Marantz aesthetic though..
Glad to hear this video is timely for you!
That's awesome! A great way to give back is by using one of our links provided to you in the description. The cost to you doesn't change but we'll earn a small amount. :)
Onkyo rz50 gives you Dirac, but with 2 parallel sub outputs. The X3800 gives you audyssey xt 32 with 4 independent sub outputs.. I'd take the X3800
How this Denon X3800 sound quality compares to a Denon PMA-900HNE? Thanks
Good afternoon, Robinsons. Great review. Hope you have a nice Sunday.
Hey there! Always a pleasure.
I love your guys reviews and I have loved stereo stuff since my early teens. With that said I never became an audiophile. I honestly don't know if my ears would/could hear the differences. My current AVR is Denon S940H which I've had for several years. Thanks for what you do!
Love these comparisons. I am leaning towards Marantz. However, I would like to know where the Pioneer vsx-lx 305 falls within these models?
Onkyo and Integra share very similar sound profiles. I believe this video will help. ua-cam.com/video/bq90iCnCXW0/v-deo.html
@@KristiWright Thank you for the reply. I will check this out. Was just looking into Pioneer and Marantz due to spatial restraints.
i believe some of the upper treble behaviour might be on account of the available power and Arendals combination.
Also, your room is stunning. Great job w that.
Thank you, Jason!
@@KristiWright Yeah, I've seen in 100 videos so far but it had a different scale today. I think it may have been a shot down the middle. You guys are killing it! Great stuff!
Thank you. I have always been an Onkyo and Pioneer user but when I saw this was coming out, I have been thinking of swapping. Thanks for the review
If you already own either I wouldn't switch at this time. Thanks for watching!
How about ranking these receivers as used as Pre-pro's, utilizing outboard amplification??? Would be helpful
Always interesting. Thanks for your takes on these receivers. Terrible leaving with that cliff hanger about there being another... Yoda. Enjoy the holidays guys. Cheers
I'm betting whomever is in your old house in Austin is wondering why they keep being gifted with all this Arcam and Paradigm gear.
What do you think of the DENON AVR- X4700H
Great channel! Will it be an update on the 3800h review after firmware updates?
This is such a relevant question. No one seems to address this on youtube
How would you rank the NAD T778 stereo sound to the cinema 50?
I'd love to hear this comparison as well.
Got the X4800H on order and hope to have it within the month. After only using Yamaha/Onkyo I’m excited for it.
Would you recommend the x3800h over the x4700h for a similar price?
I'm interested in this comparison as well.
also curious
@robinsonbrand is X3800Hs Audyssee XT32 measuring system worth it over XT from X2800H for running a 5.1 in a (very) difficult room ?
You both once again deliver a review better then anything else out there. Appreciate all the info, and if someone cannot decided on a receiver in this line of AVR after this, they never will.
Thank you so much, Justin! We appreciate you watching.
Andrew, any plans to get in the new Denon 4800 or 6800?
both quite similar
Are you going to DIRAC Test it against Audyssey? They say you can save both on the presets
How does the Denon sound compared to the Sony?
