He’s got the energy, the loyalty, the stupidity, and the complete lack of a malicious bone in his body, etc. And I find it funny that so many ppl dislike him cuz it’s the same sort of feeling I get when ppl question why ppl like cats more than dogs. They question how dogs can be annoying, but then we got a character that represents how annoying a dog is. Anyways, Jiji will get better. I’d honestly argue a good chunk of his personality in these earlier episodes are a result of his sleep deprivation. He still acts corny and silly, but not to the degree his sleep deprived brain is outputting now.
I feel like a lot of his personality early on is a direct result of the trauma he went through and his sleep deprivation. He is def better going forward, but I actually liked him a lot early on cuz you can see the cracks and desperation in his facade pretty early on.
A lot of jiji's character is joking and playing and flirting and making references to Japanese pop culture and lot of that has to do with his backstory they'll get into and part of it is a subconscious attempt to keep the Evil Eye yokai at bay in his mind
8:31 on Reddit, someone realized that Okarun's _story board_ was in fact a reflection of his adventures with Momo: + Momo surfing with Jiji: Momo "surfing" on top of Okarun during the Nessie-Mantis-Serpo incident. + Momo and Jiji parasailing: Okarun and Momo flying through the air when they tried to defeat Turbo Granny playing tag. Jiji is Corny, but (spoilers): 一 二 三 四 五 六 七 八 九 十 Karma has begun to be cruel with Jiji, and the choices Jiji will make will cost him more than benefiting his own personal interests towards Momo. Momo tolerates and kinda enjoys a _Ludus_ guy as a friend, but she will never tolerate a _Ludus_ lover like Jiji.
Jiji is corny, however, his good looks, confidence, and lack of a malicious bone in his body means it can work for him. I also get the impression his humor may land better with the Japanese, as a lot of it is referencing things most people outside Japan won't recognize.
I thought he was annoying as well. I mostly hated his flirty actions. But when episode 12 came out, I started to like him better. He turned from flirty to just an energetic goofball, he showed more care for his friends.

The calling momo cute thing is a reference to a certain japanese… TV moderator? Famous guy? Similar to how Airas whole „I‘m the chosen beauty that will exterminate the demons“ deal is a sailor moon reference. But without the knowledge of that context, it can come off as too much I guess. (Don‘t get me wrong, it‘s still very much *out there* but it‘s overdone on purpose.) But yeah, I think a lot of us took some time to warm up to Jiji xD

[Not a spoiler, but hints at furture characterization, so be warned reading further] I have a theory that he actually doesn't know how to cope with anxiety, so acts like social anxiety doesn't exist in order to cope. That is what causees the cringe, but also the attraction, because it is played off like confidence. I think my take only gets supported more the more we get to know him. He just doesn't know how to cope with negative emotions, so over composites with humor. Kinda like Okarun doesn't know how to cope so he withdraws, or Momo gets weirdly aggressive, or Aira boasts. It is a character flaw, but it balances really well with the whole dynamic once things settle in. This could all just be fannon, but it might also be why everyone is such a Jiji stan by the end of the next arch. You might be too! It also might be that the most stereotypically hot guy in the show is the comic relief and that makes everything even more funny, but idk

Not only that, we can see how he has serious moments in this arc with admitting to Momo why he’s come, as well as his inability to sleep. He completely hides most of it with goofy antics. He also suffers often with immense guilt bullying Momo and causing destruction after he couldn’t keep the evil eye in check. He wants to make everyone happy but seems to have trouble handling it, and the way he can switch from happy to serious within a moments notice implies that his goofiness is a way of hiding his feelings.

i read the manga and yes he was corny in it, but seeing it animated basically increased it 10 fold for me. he will get better tho like everyone is saying
