    I wish Amtrak could include upgrading/adding electrical outlets in Roomettes as part of their car refresh, but I can work with it new curtains, carpets, upholstery, & new blankets. I have been riding the Coast Starlight since the '80's & it's always been a relaxing trip. I'm not a fan of reaching my destinations at night- Seattle & L.A. arrival times are at approx. 9 PM if on time, but I can adapt. Good job!!

      I've rolled into Seatle as late as 4am on that train! I ALWAYS call before I go to the station. Especially since the station closes early where I catch it in Albany.

      So do you think I should chance it to get in at 9pm when other trains are late? I need to catch that shuttle bus that leaves, no matter what at 11 pm for Canada. The horrible part about that shuttle is I cannot buy a ticket online, only pay on the bus. There is a connection in Portland where I can stay overnight somewhere from Amtrak and then in the morning board Greyhound right to Seattle and Canada. Scared to get stranded.

      I understand the need to meet your connections, but trains can be late due to unforeseen circumstances. What I've learned is to give myself an additional day at my connecting points. It can be costly, but it's the only way I can ensure I won't miss a train or bus.

    I love the San Francisco/Seattle Coast Starlight experience, and do it almost every year. Last Sunday (Sept. 1st), I boarded in "beautiful downtown Emeryville," but we got no further than Sacramento. There was a fire on the tracks, north of us in Sutter county. Two freight cars, loaded with lithium batteries, were burning as we sat in Sacramento. The next morning we headed back south. The southbound "Starlight," had to head back to Seattle.
    I had a very short turn-around, but I felt bad for my fellow passengers who had boarded in Los Angeles, and wouldn't arrive back there until late that night.
    I think I'll rebook in October ... it's my favorite month, anyway.

    I take it at least once a month, next week thanks to a large Amtrak credit, I am going Seattle to Oxnard. Usually I leave from Martinez to see my daughters in SoCal. For someone like me, a small business owner, it’s the best way I know to get a little work done and then completely relax in my roomette or bedroom. The views are incredible, and if you’re lucky enough you’ll get to ride with Maureen in the dining car, she makes the trip for me!

    I'm in Fairfield/Vacaville, CA the coast starlight and zephyr run right thru here. Been a while since I tool the CS kinda getting that urge to take it some weekend. I want to take the zephyr in the winter to see the snow top mountains. The downside to that is short days, less time to look outside and see things.

    If you have space, a small resealable container with some antiseptic wipes in it is a must when you travel anywhere, by any mode of transportation. You'll be so glad you did!
    I like to pack my own food because of my dietary restrictions. It keeps well in a soft-sided, picnic bag (14"x12"x12") that is zippable. I put 2 bottles of frozen water in it with the food, & it stays cold. It's good for hours.
    I gotta say, Oregon beaches are the prettiest ones on the West Coast. Washington's are a close second, but Oregon beaches are only an hour from I-5. They can be 3-4 hours away from I-5 in Washington. Plus, ALL of Oregon's ocean beaches are open and free to the public.🌞🌊⛱️🌲🦌🌳Been like that for decades. I don't think any other state can say that about their ocean beaches.

    Love your videos which is what helped me decide to take the Amtrak from Ohio to Texas for my daughters graduation from the police academy, just got off the train last night and her graduation is tomorrow but MY EXPERIENCE WAS SHEER HELL .. first thing bad that happened, I get to Cleveland Amtrak station to catch the Lakeshore limited, sitting there talking to a nice old couple, train comes, I turn to grab my bags and there's cockroaches crawling all over the seats, didn't have time to tell anyone except the couple I was talking to, then omg the Texas eagle, what a nightmare, no air the entire 2 days, everyone is complaining, 4 hours before I'm scheduled to get off in Texas they had guys fixing it, it worked for 30 minutes and then stopped, the way the room attendant and the girl who takes your meal orders talk to us and treated us was appalling, we didn't have menus, she wouldn't bring us anything we asked for and no silverware and napkins and were told we weren't allowed a salad and roll at lunchtime even though it said salad comes with all entrees, there's more bad things but you get the picture, i call and complain and all the guy gave me was $175 voucher, after all that hell and the way we were all treated, im extremely upset and I still have to get back on, on the 24th to go back to Ohio!!!!! I'm mortified!!!!!!

    The spouse and I been looking at an Amtrak trip to either Sacramento or San Francisco. We are in the LA area. So it was very interesting to see this video to SF. One thing we were concerned about are all the businesses shutting down there and thought not much to do or see there?

    I notice that there are flowers and pretty plates and silverware in your videos but on the train from Chicago to Dallas we had none of that. It was meals in boxes with plasticware and plastic containers that look like tv dinners. Why the huge difference from routes when both are roommette dining experiences?

    • @georgemcdowell8302
      @georgemcdowell8302 3 місяці тому +4

      Your experience was different on the Texas Eagle because "Flexible Dining" is offered between Chicago & San Antonio. Traditional dining is offered on The Texas Eagle between San Antonio & L.A. I think it's a ripoff for Amtrak sleeper car passengers to be served microwaved meals on certain routes-mainly trains on the East. I've traveled the entire distance of this route & saw the stark difference after San Antonio.

      @georgemcdowell8302 Thank you for the explanation. Yes, it was very frustrating and quite disappointing. Being as that was our first experience on Amtrak and part of a bucket list experience 😢 we were sad. Not to mention the AC in the entire car we were in was not working well at all and we were sweating most of the trip. We loved riding on the train and hope the next experience will be better.

      @@kathrynw.p.6990I'm sorry you had such a poor experience. Because of the air conditioning issue, I would have complained afterwards to Amtrak with details, dates etc. Sometimes they offer a travel voucher for inconveniences. I don't know what the requirements are for that to happen, but when we were delayed for 3-4 hrs while the NTSB investigated what the conductor called a suicide by train. They gave me a travel voucher worth the value of that 1 way portion of my round trip ticket. You may not get that if you complain, but it doesn't hurt to try. Although in that particular case we didn't have to do anything. They just gave it.

    • @kathrynw.p.6990
      @kathrynw.p.6990 3 місяці тому +1

      @GuantanamoBayBarbie2 I did complain about the AC issue and they gave a voucher of $250 which was nice but not the price difference in fare from coach to a roomette where the coach customers had AC. I'm hoping my next experience is better because the traveling by train was actually a nice experience as far as seeing the landscape, and the movement and sound of the train.

      @@kathrynw.p.6990 I've been riding Amtrak since its inception & have noticed equipment failures are becoming more frequent with ageing cars. I've always written Amtrak whenever there were incidents like yours & would receive a response & a voucher towards my next trip. Amtrak will make things right.

      If it's anything like this train, call ahead to make sure it's on-time before heading for the station. I usually catch the coast starlight in Albany Oregon and head north to Seattle. Because the train comes from So Cal, it can sometimes be hours late. I've rolled into Seattle at 4am instead of the scheduled 7:45pm-ish. Coming back home once someone committed suicide be train, and we had to stop for several hours while the NTSB investigated. Always be prepared for delays! I take a lunch with me, with extra snacks & drinks. Train food is expensive and your choices are limited. Make sure your phone charger is in your carry-on baggage. You'll probably need it whether you're delayed or not.
      If you're elderly and stairs are a problem, or disabled, book your seat in the bottom area. More room, more quiet, bathrooms are close.
      Have a good trip!

      YES!!! Although I suggest bringing your own food.
      Depending on the length of your trip, you can always pack a lunch and snacks. I do that. A couple bottles of frozen water will keep things cold.
      I bought a bag that's about 14"x16"x12" and is made for carrying food and keeping it cold. $15/ & it can double as a normal big bag you carry anything in. Fill it with food and frozen ice water bottles & you're good to go!
      I'm traveling on the train soon, and since I will be on a special diet regimen I will pack my food and bring it with me. I love train travel for the most part. Long delays are the only real negative I've experienced on Amtrak. SO FAR. Hope you have a safe and good journey!

    I have a question and comment. So when you said in your title LA to SF, you could have boarded at Union Station in LA for the Coast Star Light. You did not say but Coast Starlight does not go to SF but your connecting station must have been San Jose and then maybe you took the commuter train from there to SF. Maybe you had friends in the city to stay with or you did an Uber. Can you comment? I dreamed you had a video LA to Seattle on the Coast Starlight but did not find it. If you have that one, can you share a link. Thanks. Love your videos.

    I'm hoping you can answer this question for me. I am planning a trip and will be coming into Sacramento on the Zephyr. I know that it runs late almost every single time. But it's scheduled to be in at 3:05 pm. And the Coast Starlight leave for Seattle at 11:49 pm. My question is do you think I could catch the Starlight the same day that I come in on the Zepher? Even if the Zephyr is running late, I have a window of about 7+ hours. I was just wondering what your opinion was. Thank you very much for your help.

    If you are ok with bumping and jarring on a trip, with no handles to hold on to….steep stairs that have slippery handrails… ok. I won’t do this again. Scenic areas go by so fast can’t see for maybe 20 seconds. We hit a bump while I was standing and if not for the food table being up I would have been on the floor.
