    Our local independent bus operator, A. Mayne of Clayton in Manchester used to run Regent V's. I haven't heard that gorgeous sound since about 1979 when they were taken out of service. Last time I travelled on one of those I would've been with my mum who's no longer with us so that sound really reminds me of much happier times. Thank you so much for taking the trouble to put this on here, it means a lot to me.

      @@STEVEHARLEY1956 Hi Steve - beautifully driven AEC.
      Like yourself I love those delicious AEC transmission sounds - remembering them from climbing the steep Sheffield hills as a boy on the 75 service. Those buses and sound effects exuded a warmth and friendliness missing in today's public transport. I rode many miles on my little bike whilst impersonating an AEC , not something I could admit to everyone!
      I've had ideas about buying a classic coach for many years now - but of course the sounds would have to be right, which for me means either a Bristol RELH - or an AEC Reliance. Can I ask your advice on the Reliance ? As although I've always had a strong interest I guess you know more about them than me. Is it something of a rarity to find an AEC manual gearbox or monocontrol on a coach? As it's been a bit of a dissapointment to experience the lack of musicality with a ZF which seems to be installed in the ones I've looked at. On that point I assume the AEC box sounds the way it does because It's straight cut? But why is the AEC just quite so musical? Happy driving - Rob.

    • @STEVEHARLEY1956
      @STEVEHARLEY1956  5 років тому

      @@robertp.wainman4094 Rob i have no idea about the Reliance...I was brought up on AEC's....But when i left School in 1973...it took til 1979 before i ventured onto Bristol Omnibus.....Love FLF's..especially the Bristol BVW Engined ones..Not a fan of Gardner's...The AEC's are much easier to drive overall...It was a dream come true to drive the Regent V on numerous occasions...It was better than i could have ever imagined....Steve. ** Thanks for the comment about my driving...There is a later video of Me driving and AEC Routemaster around Swansea You might like too....ua-cam.com/video/CaKqjmIXa5k/v-deo.html

      Many childhood memories came back watching this, I remember the low roof single deckers but never travelled on one. Was wondering if any of the Llanelli double deckers survived. I lived up at Pen Y Graig pretty much at the end of the route (L13?) I remember the fleet carried Reg numbers in the CCY sequence 986 to 991C and 2 or 3 GWN 85* and an 86* but I’m certain these were on a D suffix, those had exhaust brakes and made an amazing sound slowing at the bottom of Penllwynrhodyn Road before turning right towards Llanelli town centre The sound is certainly iconic, I miss seeing the rounded window behind the cab that was always scratched where conductors would get a coin (usually an old penny) and rap twice to signal the driver if they were stood there. I also remember some of the older long wheelbase busses they used on the Llanelli-Swansea run, I’d wait for a South Wales AEC rather than the United Welsh Bristol Lodekkas that shared the route.

      kevintregunna They were a unique batch of single deck Regents used in the Llanelli area...so they could go under a very low Railway Bridge in the Town. Thanks for your very kind comment Kevin....S.~

I'll tell Sharon you liked her Filming, she'll be pleased, she always doubts her abilities....no need. All finished off with some beautiful views at Bracelet Bay and Langland. Excellent production, and one to treasure...not sure about the inclusion of yours truly...not a pretty sight...Best wishes to you both...Bob

    Excellent video of you driving the Regent Steve! Tell me is it a double clutch or synchronised gear box? My pop seems to think it's a double clutch crash gearbox is he right? All up a very good video, thanks for sharing with us.
    It brought back memories for my Pop especially as we had similar buses like this in South Australia in the 1940s and 1950s and apart from our trolley buses we had a extensive array of double deckers too.
    Even nowadays we have double deckers that do the country runs to Harndorf, Woodside and Birdwood (where the National Motor Museum is) a place you should visit if you ever come to South Aus for a holiday.

I am a member of the Museum although i live over a 100 Miles away...But it is my Home City. Langland Bay Is where i lived before moving to England in 1969...Behind the Beach is a large Cliff , our old House used to be just over the top of it...about 800 Yards away if that. Shame the tide was out...it looks much better when it's up ! Thanks for your great comments....S.~
