- To commemorate the 5th anniversary of Dave retiring from late night television (his last show was on May 20, 2015), I've put together a series of "first and last" appearances, the latter paying tributes in their own ways to the last giant of late night (h/t Jason Zinoman).
Part 1. Chris Elliott
1. March 16, 1982
2. February 10, 2015
The 2015 guest appearance comes from Andrew Lynch's superb UA-cam upload, linked here: • Video
I watched this goofy man perform on Late Night since the 80's through the 90's and onward. He always cracked me up. He is part of the DNA of Letterman's television legacy.
"The funniest person I've ever worked with". That comment from Dave blew me away. Chris on the early Letterman show was some of the funniest comedy of the last forty years.
"Thanks a lot, that was awful."
Perfect letterman
Dave agreed to be in Cabin Boy. That’s how much he loved Chris Elliot
Dave: "Funniest man I've ever worked with"
"Schitt's Creek" is the kind of name I could see 80s-era Dave having a ball with as a skit/gag, complete with Bill Wendell doing a fake NBC promo ("In Schitt's Creek, the water may be brown but the fun is crystal clear!").
Funny to look back on this interview from 6 years ago..little did Chris know how huge Schitt's Creek would be!
Fantastic. I lived it all too
Wonderful!!
Thanks Don im gonna love these
This was hilarious but I love the original movie which is a classic.
At first I thought ( after a glance) that one of these guys died. Glad that's not the case.
Dude you scared me. I thought Letterman just died.
I did the exact same, went straight to google dreading the worst.
Consider reading the description first.
Don Giller Well, I saw your uploads and had the thought before I could even click on the videos to read the descriptions.
Storied Worlds it’s funny, i don’t really “get” how this universal assumption of death has associated itself so strongly with this channel. It’s become so hilariously predictable that one need not scroll too far on any given video to find the “who died?” question (now meme, basically?). Interestingly, I’ve found that a video’s description is often found right below the video.

At first glance of the video's title, I got worried 😦
Immediately ran to online news, looking for the Letterman Dead At 73 headlines. WTF
Next time, consider first reading the description.
@@dongiller Well, sure, but when you see 655 Donz videos all of which are tributes to Dave of various vintages, you have no time to read descriptions!!!
“He ain't dead, just relax, will ya?”
Anyone know what the "computer mix-up" was?
AT&T Long Lines or satellite trouble?
what america hates though is a trainwreck no one sees.
