    Also, and Nahid Ji will verify this, Baba Ghulam Maharaj had been taught by one of Birju Maharaj's Late uncles. Nahid Ji's is a style that has often been referred to as the Lahori Angh of the Lucknow Gharana. Baba Ghulam Maharaj once said about her that her dance has the strength of the Punjab and the intricate sophistication of princely Lucknow.

    This video is from a Pakistan Television program aired on weekly basis in late seventies. A ban was imposed by Gen Zia regime and the show was off air due to restrictions. I wrote a letter to the editor of Weekly Nigar in those days which was published prominently as I condemned govt decision to stop this program. Naheed and all musicians were simply outstanding in this show

    :) i feel your pain. i've been doing kathak since i was little, but no one takes me seriously no matter how hard i practice and how good i am because i'm a persian kowli girl. my problem was not being born indian or pakistani. darn!!

    Nahid ji credits Birju Maharaj with a lot and has an immense amount of respect for him but what she had developed over the years is a style that's distinctly hers and can be identified as hers only. Also to clarify, I am not discrediting any of the amazing work being done in India as far as Kathak is concerned. I am particularly fond of and admire the work of Late Pundita Rohini Bhate ji and her students and the great stalwart, Late Durga Lal ji.

  • @tripmonk0

    She used to live in the UK/London in the 1980s so maybe she started with Pandit-ji some time then. I would presume it's much easier going from the UK to India than Pakistan as you mentioned.

    Dear Nick, we are going to start transferring things from VHS soon. Plan on uploading clips soon. I am in my very nascent stage of training. If I put the hard work required and stay dedicated, I will definitely post something in the future.
    P.S this particular piece was shot in Pakistan and was prequel to Payal. I confirmed with Guru Ji. :)

    @Desi4evah because back then the relations between India and Pakistan were CONSIDERABLY more sour than they were today. Zia Ul Haque's efforts towards "Islamization" of Pakistan were in DIRECT conflict with India's effort to make a Hindu-centric Secular state. As sometimes noticed today, a Pakistani wouldn't have been welcome to perform in India and be supported because of the "dushman mulk" sentiment. She would've been deported back to Pakistan where she'd be killed...back then.

  • @tripmonk0

    Actually neither as, at THIS point, she hadn't gone to the maestro Pt Birju Maharaj yet. This style she learned from her Pakistani guru, Gulam Maharaj.

    I am sorry Nick. I will completely disagree with you here. Being her student, I can tell you that she has done extensive research of her own and her style is not one that you will see in any of Birju Maharaj's students. Unfortunately there's barely any recent work of her up on youtube for you to be able to compare but for someone who sees her everyday and is learning from her, I can safely say I have not seen anything even closely similar to what she does in India.

  • @tripmonk0
    @tripmonk0  12 років тому +3

    Firstly you're wrong as this isn't from Pakistani TV but the BBC in the 1980s. I always admired her strength & certain precision in her dance but her abhinaya lacked depth THEN. Only when she went to Birju Maharaj did she completely flower.
    Being Pakistani & Muslim is a pathetic excuse of using the race card.

    Tolerable but a bit cloying in places.

  • @kanjilalbaishali
    @kanjilalbaishali 11 років тому +2

    Her movements are jerky to the point of looking comic. I am sorry but that is my honest opinion. She comes nowhere close to the multitudes of young kathak dancers in India let alone the maestros like Maharaj Ji and Guru Bandana Sen

    • @Indusxstan
      @Indusxstan 5 років тому

      Baishali Kanjilal exactly. Her Abhinaya is rather cloying also.
