Luther Snake Boy/Georgia Boy Johnson Lesson

- This week's topic is the mysterious and gone-too-soon Luther "Georgia Boy" Johnson, also known as Luther "Snake Boy" Johnson: real name Lucious Brinson. His two years with Muddy Waters put him on the map and he recorded several fine records with "The Bluesmen of the Muddy Waters Band" for Spivey, as well as "Chicken Shack" and "Mud in Your Ear" with some truly incendiary guitar and gripping vocals. He's appeared on several Otis Spann records from the late 60s and "Live at Cafe au Go Go" by John Lee Hooker. But this lesson is mostly concerned with some of his own songs and records such as "Born in Georgia", "Get Down to the Nitty Gritty" and his record of haunting, John Lee Hooker-styled solo performances, "Back on the Road Again". I'll discuss "Woman Don't Lie" (watch here: • Luther Johnson (Live i... ) and his cool playing on this Muddy Waters live in Copenhagen clip: / watchv=wwzbm3tm60c&t=1...
I should have done a better job with my playing on that part but hopefully it'll get you started on appreciating Luther's brooding and original work on the bass strings, and his injection of a free-er more John Lee Hooker based style into the Muddy Band. Musicians and fans: if you have memories of Luther/Lucious, please post! I'd love to read them.
