      Same. (I liked it best and I have a bottle already!) Plus, that was straight medium; I'm sure with a 50/50 medium and water mix you could get it even thinner and smoother if that's what you wanted.

      OK and I do agree about the model on show, but with mini painting it's easier to make things darker, use more coats be they speedpaints or transparents or inks or washes or whatever, building more thin layers of pigmentation. Removing pigmentation... more tricky.

    Once I get some, I'll do my own tests, also, as I've a good 2-3x as much variety in my mediums collection. That being said, for this video, I like them all equally, for different application. The Liquitex maintains the color intensity, whilst the others are muc lighter, but the lighter ones also are more liquefied and apply smoother. My project-specific use would depend solely on intended outcome.

  • @jherazob

    I preferred A, pleased it was the AP one. Not expensive and easy to get here. Still, i'd try to find a homemade recipe.
    I've seen two different recipes for homemade Contrast paints, the Goobertown one with 50/50 ink and medium with some flow improver added, and the Spikeybits one which used 50/50 flow-aid and medium to produce a Contrast-like medium which was then mixed with paint, both worked well (although i think Brent's version was more vivid because inks). So, i strongly believe we can make this at home as long as we have medium. My guess is that 50/50 Medium and Water with some flow-improver added would work well.
    Since you do have the ingredients you might consider testing this :)

    • @ninjatango
      @ninjatango 9 місяців тому

      You can't make anything that even sort of approximates contrast at home. You can only make thick washes, which is fine but never nearly the same. Contrast has 11 or so different components that allow it to act as both a base coat and also a shade that separates out from the base, then settles in like a wash. Nothing anyone's ever made at home can do that at all and even Army Painter after years of research were unable to quite get there.

    The pooling into reccesses happens thanks to a flow improver that is inside each of these, beside the pure Liquitex medium. You can always buy a separate flow improver to mix with the medium to achieve similar results to these ready-to-go products.

    This is a very cool video idea but you really need to re-do the test without using a wet palette. Just use hard plastic palette or any plastic really. Having experimented with Speedpaints quite a bit now, including with its own medium, I've actually wound up preferring it mixed with Lahmian Medium. It makes it very runny, but if you're a little careful with how you put it on you can get an extremely smooth finish with dramatic contrast. Just don't overload the model like you might with Speedpaint alone otherwise it does pool at the bottom of surfaces. You need less paint to get the same effect, and it's less likely to result in a blotchy finish.

      The word contrast is irrelevant, what's relevant is the BRAND Contrast that's being discussed. A proprietary formula that's an opaque base coat and ink-wash style shade in one pot that applies in one step to give a base color and a second, deeper color that separates out into the shadow areas. It has never been successfully reverse engineered or figured out and the only imitators are using a different, roughly comparable formula.
