I'm wondering what would have happened if Kylie had held to this kind of artsy music! She wouldn't probably become so popular, I guess... Right now I can't imagine Kylie without glitters and sparkles everywhere and I love her the way she is, but I think that Impossible Princess Kylie had something special too!!! It was the time when her best masterpieces were born!
I ask myself this question as well sometimes. For people raised on CGYOOMH it is unimaginable that just three years earlier Kylie had such gig like Intimate & Live. But well. Impossible Princess was her most underrated album. At that time they sold around 20 thousands copies, in UK where she was loved album was dropped to position 70... The results were so bad that DeConstructions records dropped contract with her after two albums (when they agreed for three). Well - when Parlophone came to her with offer of disco album and potential hist "Spinning around" already written, she couldn't say no.
I love Kylie and actually this is one of my favourite songs from her. It has aged well and this sound was before its time and really showed a more creative side of Kylie Minogue. :)
This is not a judgement...just an observation. I adore Kylie. But, does anyone else notice that back then, she didn't place things quite so far up in her nasal passages. Her sound is ever-so-slightly fuller.
I think the problem here is that she has a cold or something. You can tell by the odd phrasing and the way she's opening her mouth. If you listen to other recent live performances of this song, she doesn't sound so nasal.
I think the only reason she started singing the way she does here is because people used to criticize her for having such a high pitch voice. When she broke away from S&W she pretty much rebelled against everything that, seemingly, was natural to her (or at least associated with her). But now I feel like she's embraced her nasally tone and even plays it up because it's basically like her trademark at this point.
Definitely one of my favorite songs by her. This song is pure art.

She looks more talented and less pathetic here
This era was just another stepping stone in her journey. She often talks about how it was very important in developing her craft..

Agree. She is very nasally in her latter years.

I much prefer her voice between '88-2000 her voice has got more weak and airy now kinda annoying on her latest records
