- Taking a look at construction on the Broadway Subway Project in Vancouver in August 2024
Check out the BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure flickr page, it has excellent photos of the project www.flickr.com...
Ti Corp, let me in a tunnel please :)
A Friday video release? Neat!
What does it say about me that I forgot Flickr existed
Thanks for the weekend treat, Stainer!
This video says it was posted 15 hours ago but the comment is from 23 hours ago. How did you time travel?
@@CaptBurgerson same, I thought it was closed.
@@kaidencr are you joking completely? I can't tell. I know that you're joking a little.
Some people are allowed to see it before us. Also, we might be able to find it, if he puts it in a playlist, and if we check that playlist.
I absolutely love seeing construction progress. I know humanity has its share of problems but it never ceases to amaze me what humanity can build
Thank you for your continued coverage! It's neat to see it grow and evolve, and to have a these videos as a time capsule for the future.
Like for Lemmings
The telescopic excavator was very cool. The government should give you a special pass to view the site, with all the pr work you are doing. :) Thank you and great week.
If we all tweet this video at Rob Fleming, maybe it'll happen?
Hahaha the portapotty was hilarious. Thanks for the video! Looking forward to the next update
I'VE NEEDED THIS UPDATE FOR MONTHS. Your Broadway Subway videos make me happy even in this unhappy world.
So happy to see all the walls and slab I inspected for formwork before concreting from a different angle. It was not easy to make sure everything was right before the pour, But when I see this, its worth the struggle... Thank you.
Sorry what? It's still projected to be completed within the original budget?
What sorcery is this?
Kudos to everyone involved in making that happen!
Yeah that's outstanding quite frankly and will doubtless make post mortems on this vs the Langley extension fascinating given the latter got such a huge bump in price before really getting going even. Could be that Broadway just had signed contracts that locked in a pre-pandemic price that Langley got nailed with or something else might be going on but I'd be fascinated to find out.
id rather they double the budget but get it to us sooner☹
Should be used as an example of what to do for all the other projects if it stays on budget and not get delayed as much as every other project.
It's like how the Site C dam is also headed to being finished on budget as well... the revised 2021 budget, not the hopelessly doomed original one. Turns out public projects can be completed on budget... if the budget was done properly in the beginning instead of being low-balled like the so often are.
BC government is so corrupt. Its shocking they are not trying to squeeze more out of this. Yet.
Well done, thank you so nice to hear a human voice narrating for a change
Love these updates along with the commentary - makes a lot more sense than what we learn from just the TransLink press releases!
These video updates are a great way to keep the public informed. Thanks
Just want to echo what others have already said: thank you for making such a great update video, with wonderful narration, and awesome drone shots!
My favorite videos for real! Can't wait when this thing is complete
Thank you for another amazing video. Looking forward to your next updates.
Great update! And nice the way you included those released photos with your own footage - thank you!
Thanks ,starting work here soon and appreciate seeing some places I’ll probably be working at,drove by a while ago and one can’t see very much, keep up the good work on both projects.
That'll be fun! You'll get to see all the work up close, jealous!
incredible amount of work ,kudos to the gents building this and putting in the hard work
Your footage is amazing, so crisp and life like. Nice video!
Amazing coverage. Love your videos ❤
Thanks for a the great videos, I'm looking forward to your coverage of the Surrey/Langley extension.
The Vancouver subway extension looks nice save for one small problem: I would've added an addition station on Burrard St since Burrard St is the other street that leads to downtown Vancouver, plus it has a bus line along Burrard.
new stainer video, I used to pray for times like this
Used to???
I often pray to the infrastructure gods
Thank you for the update, I look forward to your next video.
Sooo good, thanks for the update!!
I was just hoping last week to see one of your updates soon! Thank you for doing this :)
Reminds me a lot of the Skytrain in your Neighbourhood paper notices BC Transit used to post back in 1980
Thank you so much for continuing to report on TransLink projects! I love to know what is going on but TransLink doesn't explain it as in-depth as you do!
Nice to see another video. As for the Surrey-Langley line from what I have seen, as I only go as far east as 152 street, is utility relocation and building demo for the 152 street station.
Yeah there's not too much going on just yet, but there is test piling starting at 203rd next week. Will try and catch that.
@@StainerTheFirst There has been drilling and medians removed where columns will be placed.
finally! Thank you so much
It's still expected to come in within the original budget? Wow! Hats off to everyone involved.
The project has incurred unexpected costs, so if they're still coming in under budget, it means the budget was inflated to begin with.
Contingency planning in budgeting is something that every project/business does. You won't know what unexpected things will happen, but you can plan and be prepared to react when/if they do.
@@cmmartti It means the original budget was well constructed, not that there was a failure. You don't know what unexpected things will happen or exactly how much they will cost, but in a project of this scale, you can expect that "something" will go wrong "at some point", and budget for it.
@@csquaredgaming I wasn't implying that it wasn't well-constructed or that it was a failure (although reading it back it looks like I was). I meant that it was inflated (increased) beyond what it would cost in an ideal scenario.
However, I would be interested to learn how these budget inflations for contingencies are calculated. Do they just tack on an extra 30% and call it a day, or do they actually analyse the risk level of each segment of the project and adjust it accordingly?
thank you!
I have no problem with the vid itself, it's great! The problem in typical Vancouver fashion, is it's 60 years too late.
Thanks for the update!
Subbed, haha this channel is awesome
Drop everything, a new stainer video is out!!!!
But don't drop your tools!
@@blorpblorpblorpI Stained my shorts
Woooo yeahhhh that's what I'm talking about!!!!
good commentary. i wish my city would actually build new rail.
Cool 😎.
Oh shit it’s getting real, dog. YEAH
Local 97 shirt spotted, i hope to join them after going to bcit
I worked at Whole Foods Market Cambie in 2011-12. The building had been built with an entrance to the future subway station. In the back of the store (which is in the basement in the back but at street level on 8th Ave) there was a big area that was used then for storage. I would presume now this section is not part of the store any longer. I don't know if they could have done things differently for this project. It is very complicated due to the fact that it is in a more densely populated area with not much room to manoeuvre such an undertaking. Although I've not been back to Vancouver since then it seems the disruption at ground level must have created a commotion for lots of people. Something that lasts so long has big impact on the locals and users.
Which camera/drone do you use? Excellent quality, especially how smooth the drone is. Amazing what drones can accomplish now that only helicopters with a camera crew could 20 years ago
I use a DJI Mini pro 3 since it's small enough to fly in town with the proper license. I would love to get a larger drone with a proper camera, but $$$ and permits. I shoot everything else with a Canon R5 and sometimes a Pixel 8 or a Gopro 8.
This was posted after my 17th birthday.
This project will be three years behind schedule and the UBC portion will take another 20 yrs to build. OMG - takes forever!!!
Great video! If you want some company filming in Surrey/Langley I'd love to come check it out with you. I'm fascinated by this stuff. Our company is about to start the motor control panels for the Broadway stations.
I really wish that we'd make it a group event.
@@eugenetswong that would be even better.
Glad you liked it! Motor control panels? Sounds pretty neat!
While it is a lot of fun to check out the construction in person, the filming process is a lot of time running around and waiting to get the right shot. A friend came along once thinking it would be super interesting, but got bored quickly realizing how much time it takes.
@@StainerTheFirst Just for the lols, please bring a friend to film a behind the scenes look; letting us see you hanging around waiting. I think that it'll be interesting at first.
I do photography, filming and drone work too. I understand the waiting around for just the right moments. It's worth it to be patient. :)
The optimist in me holds out hope that an earliest initial operating extension to GNW Emily Carr and maybe even Mount Pleasant. There is a noticeable gap in progress between the stations east and west of city hall caused by the TBM delays there.
Stainer content is so back
You may have talked about this in a portion of an earlier video, but do you think they should've just built it all the way to UBC since there's all the equipment/staff on site? Overall cost is cheaper too? Would like to see an analysis video on that.
I am really hoping that they start the UBC section right away, or shortly after completion. They need to keep the momentum going.
Good chance that NDP will provide a timeline as part of this year's election (so within a month or two) for UBC. Yeah it definitely should've been all 1 phase to save on costs but the nice thing is the part to UBC will involve less tunneling so should be faster and cheaper. Jericho lands project being approved also helps as that depends on there being 2 skytrain stations as part of it
@@SeriesShower It seems to be roughly the same amount of tunneling, roughly 5km. I can't imagine any section being above ground before hitting the Endowment Lands.
In terms of cost, because of recent construction inflation, this section of the line will be more expensive without a doubt. The only benefit may be UBC providing funding directly.
I disagree with you guys completely. We have such small budgets, that we can't spend that money on UBC. We already need it for BRT or Rapid Bus from the North Shore to Metrotown, or for beefing up other routes.
Just giving Rapid Bus its own lanes to-from UB is already a lot.
It NEEDS to go all the way to UBC. It has always needed to. Keep going all the way to UBC and make that the terminus. People have been saying so since f*cking 1999, so enough of this idiotic piecemeal process, where they stop and for a decade say "well, that's enough", that both of BC's parties in power have engaged in. UBC should have been done before Evergreen line, before Langley, and had they actually done so originally, it would have been done even before the Canada Line. Shortsighted fools, leaving the most obvious unfinished business undone, while land values multiplied 5x, while buildings got built where their track and stations should have been.
Do not stop the project this time - Arbutus, then MacDonald, then Alma, then Blanca, then finally the center of UBC, and THEN you're done.
I hope progress on Purple Line accelerates and we get to build more Transit lines. I hope Province moves quickly on MVX and Cross Island Rail (which proposes to rehabilitate an abandoned rail line).
He's still alive!
new broadway subway project update on a friday.............. DUDE BEST FRIDAY EVER 🤪
Nice video and thank you for showing this, but it’s quite disappointing that it will open in fall of 27 from the mid 2025 date that it was supposed to
COOL!! it fuckin sucks it got a 2 year delay…
The Langley extension feels more interesting…
For sure! We'll actually be able to see almost the whole construction process in detail. Looking forward to shooting that series!
Why don’t they let you in? Your videos are awesome!
It's not just me, they don't let any UA-camrs or media people in due to "security reasons". It's a shame, I'd happily work for them but they are no openings.
Hey, earlier this week I saw someone at Broadway-City Hall wearing a blue shirt, back pack, and a silver camcorder. would that happen to be you?
No, I was filming in August. Got sick and wasn't able to record a voice over, thus the delay.
@@StainerTheFirst oh, sorry to hear you were ill. happy to have you back.
So which strip is considered the third rail?
Skytrain has 2 power rails that run along side the tracks. So I guess you could call it a 5 rail system with 2 running rails, the linear induction rail (center) and the 2 power rails. Just wait a few days for a engineer or maintenance worker to comment and explain it in better details :)
Is there an update on the construction for the new Skytrain garage?
Soon tm
Broadway skytrain line will stay 'in budget' but surrey/langley skytrain line almost doubled, things that make you go mmmmmmm....
Totally understand the thinking. Thankfully the broadway line ordered/paid/contracted out before inflation hit causing massive price increases.
SLS has been impacted just like other major projects in the region. The highway 1 widening out to Abbotsford saw a similar price increase as well.
@@StainerTheFirst I hear you, until an independent auditor goes through it, we have to 'trust' what the government is saying. Just feels like horrible mismanagement
@@oishiitravel2436 I'm sure if it ends up going over budget there will be an audit to see what went wrong and learn from it going forward. All things considered it's doing okay, could be worse like the Finch West line in Ontario where construction is completed and there's still no opening date.
It will come in 2026
The line should have been built all the way down to Alma. Extremely bad foresight on the part of the Govt of BC. When they finally build to Alma, rather than 2022-2027 dollars / expense, it will end up costing double.
You mean UBC? The stations at both Macdonald and Alma would be the lowest driver of ridership on the entire line. Arbutus is a good end point for now, being at the tail end of the Broadway business district and within the "Broadway Plan". We'll see towers going up over the next few decades... not so much between Macdonald and Alma.
@aarongrant3799 ... Arbutus is an absolute BAD ending point in the 2024 - it's not 1994. At the very least, this line should have ended at Alma now, and then plans immediately begin to get it up to UBC by 2030 - 3032 at the latest.
@jefftaylor844 But then, what's stopping you from going all the way to UBC? I mean , you moved at least a third of the way there. You and I have no clue what budgets and business cases they had at the time. Besides, where is the bus loop going to go at Alma?
@aarongrant3799 ... you have many excuses for such a shortsighted transit decision, but the fact remains, it's 2024 - nearly 2025, and still, there's NO major train line anywhere close to UBC !
⏱️💸
They wasting so much money on this project due to poor management.
Right outside my work, so annoying.
Why does it take SIX YEARS to build something like this.
Forget China or Korea or Japan - France (with insanely tough labor laws and conditions) does it in half the time for half the cost.
If you want to build something faster, you need a lot more money and a lot more manpower. Would you like to guess which of those Canada is lacking in?
@@csquaredgaming lacking in leadership. This is such a lame excuse for a world leading economy.
Could it have been built faster? Probaby. Faster, cheaper, better. Pick 2.
We also have pretty strict seismic requirements which add time and complexity to the project.
Skytrain: noisy, crowded, horrible.
