"The people in the Holocaust got starved real skinny, and they survived it!" NO, GWEN, most of those people rather famously did NOT survive afterwards because of the damage that starvation had done to their bodies! He explained to me the next morning when I found the bag on the floor and the wrappers- "I didn't want to give myself a tummy ache and I didn't want to wake you up to ask how much I could have because you seemed really tired mommy"
I told him that he had made a reasonable and responsible healthy decision (not to pig out on too much candy), and that it was very mature of him- but I absolutely wouldn't have been angry OR blamed him had he eaten half the dang bag and made himself sick. Encouraging your child to starve themselves is CHILD ABUSE and these people in this cult do NOT deserve to be having and raising children.

While you can not "catch" a eating disorder; dieting, consuming information with harmful ideas around food and body image, learning about ways to conceal disordered eating etc. are certainly risk factors that could easily trigger or worsen disordered eating to the point of a eating disorder of someone who has genetic and psychosocial factors e.g. trauma, personality type, comorbities etc that are a hightened risk of a ED.,

I lived near Remnant Fellowship for most of my life (moved a little further out 3 years ago because money) and in 2017 I went to one of their church services because I had been so curious for years after hearing so much about them.
Everything that I had heard was true. It was the most eerie place I think I've ever been to. It wasn't a fully white church, which is abnormal for the area. But everyone was skinny and conventionally beautiful. The "sermon" was absolutely nonsensical. Gwen would cite some random Bible verse that everyone already knows and ramble on about some generic life lesson that anyone could have made, and the congregation ate it up.
But this is what has always stuck with me: they LOVED me. I was swarmed, multiple people asked for my phone number (I gave a fake number), asked me to come to this or that event, begged me to come to the next service and join the church.
At the time I was in the depths of anorexia. I was severely, visibly underweight. My family and friends were all very worried about my health.
I'm so, so glad that I went just as a matter of curiosity and didn't get sucked into it. That crap is just straight up dangerous. I sent some pretty dark puns to my friends and family when she died.

As someone raised in an all-Catholic town and who had a mother who thought Jews were exotic, I can attest that sadly, Gwen is not unique in her attitude about the Holocaust, *however*, it's one thing to be raised to think one understands the Holocaust, then be educated about it as an adult and realize that you were not informed at all. Those people, including myself, all then say, "I had no idea. I was wrong, I thought my religion told me accurately what happened, but they didn't." I was shocked by how she doubled and tripled and quadrupled down on her statements. All she had to do was say, "That was an ignorant comparison, I was uninformed and am sorry." Then again, she wouldn't be the subject of a doc, etc., if she had that sensitivity, intelligence and compassion. I think many, many white Protestants and Catholics were raised in churches that didn't emphasize that it was a genocide (or that physically and mentally disabled people and homosexuals were also targeted) and we only learned after we became adults what really occurred. I am unsure as to why that is the case, but at least for Boomers and Gen X, I think that may have been the norm?

    • @lsmmoore1
      @lsmmoore1 2 роки тому +9

And also, her citing nutrition books justifies nothing. Textbooks use vaguely uncomfortable examples (and some outright uncomfortable ones) a lot more often than you would think. And by uncomfortable, I don't mean "discussing harsh truths". I mean examples in the same general category as that Holocaust one. One such textbook example I recall off the top of my head is an anthropology textbook using literal confirmation bias as a means of defending cultural relativism (when a better example would be, for instance, the prevalence of sexual references in storylines in anime, which comes from Japan, which has an exceptionally high prevalence of sexually oriented crimes, which means that while yes, you have your Ghibli folks and all that, you also have the ones telling stories geared towards adults which are, even in some of the better tellings, going to refer to sexual stuff in places where Western storytellers might use a different plot device because sexual crimes are less prevalent where we are).

I want to make it clear I don't have a degree in food science. I do however work in a school where we have a lot of kids who are in foster care due to lack of food and other abuse. One of the worst things you can do to any of those kids is hold food out as a thing only to look at because a good chunk of them have either never had ready access to food or have been starved as a punishment. Its a huge trigger. The other day before break started one of my students had their lunch card go missing and he couldn't remember the number. He had a full on panic attack that he wasn't going to be able to eat and that when he got back to the group home he's currently in that he would have to wait till 6 to get feed. Back in the 1990s, my neighbors got involved with Weigh Down at their fundamentalist Independent Baptist Church. I was visiting on a nice summer day when they placed their 6 month old baby on a blanket on the grass as we were talking. The baby tried to crawl off and explore and to my shock and horror, the father grabbed him and spanked him hard 2-3 times. This was repeated a couple of times. When the father noticed my face, he said "He has to learn obedience!" I left after telling him I didn't think a 6 month old had any idea why his father was hitting him. This was just one incident that was obviously influenced by the Weigh Down/Remnant idea of Christianity. There are more stories to tell, but even though we are still neighbors, other than a wave from afar, we don't really have any contact. My mom did Weigh Down Workshop at least twice when I was a teenager. I still have body image issues at 40 as a result!

I found out my mom used to do the Weigh Down Workshop and said it was amazing. In that moment, a lot of things about what my mom’s views on food made a lot of sense.

I live two minutes (literally) from Remnant. I can confirm they are buying properties like crazy. It can be 1-4 families per house so they can afford it. They hardly speak to anyone unless it's inviting you to the church.

This is horrifying! These 'churches' need to have far closer scrutiny..once the money they make comes under tighter restrictions, once its harder to evade tax by deciding they're a charity, so many will miraculously begin to disappear!

I was raised in the Church of Christ, specifically the noninstitutional branch, and “intense” is a good way to put it. Their teachings are definitely very toxic and have left me with a lot of issues around self-worth. I’d love to see you do an episode on them!

Interestingly, RF is composed of mostly failed or rebellious CoC. It's the primary pathway. The deconstruction of a century or two ago led to this unmoored and untethered RF doctrine. And they are all very self-aware.

"The Antichrist resides within each of us," has to be one of the most spine-chillingly abusive theological statements I've ever heard. Also using it if I ever make a Grindcore album.

Someone has to read the word of God (King James Bible) to believe it. If someone never opens their heart to God and never reads His word, it will continue to be a "fairy tale" to them... But here's the thing... It isn't a fairy tale.
Romans 10:17 - So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Hebrews 11:6 - But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Hmm. She had a body-hating eating disorder and believed her own (our own?) physical desires to eat could be evil, so it "makes sense" that she would think an evil being resided in us. That's like the "sin nature" argument times 10,000. There's no antichrist in humans, but unfortunately there is a lot of deadly self-hatred.

Honestly, nothing she said about this woman is any more triggering that just LOOKING at her. You can't help but to know how deeply she believed in starvation as "dieting" just by looking at how malnourished and disgustingly unhealthy she herself, let alone her poor child were/are (her poor deeply malnourished daughter is still alive, sadly, suffering and continuing to perpetuate her mother's abuse on more and more deeply impressionable and nieve people, it's truly sad. The only good thing is that this heinous and awful woman got EXACTLY what she deserved, going down in a ball of flames, being torn apart before she died a horrible, painful death that she knew, for several terrifying minutes was coming and could do absolutely nothing to stop.

My mom died in a car accident when I was 9, I went to live with my moms sister afterwards. They were Church of Christ, and I had to attend “every time the doors were open”, until I turned 18 & nope’d right out. The only really strange things I remember were they strongly forbade dancing & they didn’t allow musical instruments during singing at the church. It was from a verse in the Bible that said to lift up your voice in praise. They took that as having an organ or piano accompaniment was somehow sinful. Anytime school had a dance, like prom night, the church would go all out to have some young adult activities planned the same night. Supposedly dancing would arouse lustful thoughts & heaven forbid!! We were teenagers, we had lustful thoughts all the time, dancing or not😂

When Church of Christ women get engaged, they have the wedding in a church of another denomination so their wedding can have music. When my ex was a teen, their high school did not have a prom because the principal was Church of Christ so - no dancing events allowed.
