Walther P 38 vs South Carolina LEO Pistol Course

- Here is number 17! In this one, I'm pitting the historical Walther P38 (P1) against a current South Carolina Law Enforcement Handgun Cualification Course. Check out the video to see how the venerable pistol performs!
First military surplus handgun! This will be a good one
Looked like one of the tougher courses and the pistol choice made it even harder. Great job HR and I think it was 96%
Yep. Someone else also corrected my arithmetic. Thank you David!
Very nice work with an unfamiliar pistol. The 2nd strike capability certainly came in handy :)
Yes it did. Thanks for watching Jim!
Don’t know why, but I’ve always found the P38 aesthetically pleasing, which is fancy talk for its a good looking gun
I always thought so too.
I'm enjoying these qualifications video as well as the older guns you are using.
Stay safe out there
Thanks Paul.
These are the best videos in my opinion. The viewer gets to see the performance of the handgun plus a little history of the weapon.
Whoever thought to video all 50 LE Qualification Courses should be complimented.
That was an idea that evolved during the course of shooting the first few qualifications.
Another great video mr. Funk thank you very much
You’re welcome Jeremy. Thanks for watching!
I bought a walther P1 back in October of 2021 i love the old school guns more lots of history and i gotta say the P1 is a badass handgun
I like them too. They are fun to shoot and their history is interesting to explore.
@@hrfunk yes sir it's the history behind them for sure great handguns
I have to confess to having 5 P-38's/P-1's. I have thousands of rounds through them, and this is my "go-to-war gun." There are many variants of these pistols which makes collecting them a hoot. --Old Guy
Most fun course so far for me lite primer strike and all. Very good reloads also. Really enjoying this sieries, great idea. Thanks again.
Thank you Lee!
I qualified this week and after 40+ years of shooting for points, I shot the worst score of my life, barely making the cut. Howard, I think after watching your superior skills on so many courses, I just choked...lol
Great video!
Anyone who’s ever done any amount of shooting has had an occasional off-day. I shot in two rifle matches last weekend. I won the match on Saturday, then on Sunday I could barely hit the ground with my feet. I don’t have to tell you to keep shooting. You already know that!
@@hrfunk, funny story. "Every dog has his day." I hope you and yours have a great weekend.
You too Mike.
I am very excitied about this one MR Funk. Your using one of my favorite pistols and I think i asked you for this one the state and gun!
Yep! This is the one you requested.
Thanks for the hook up with the optics planet code! Keep up the great work, I love this series
Thanks Joe! Will do.
That old warhorse acquitted itself quite well. You, of course, made it perform. By my count you scored a 96% on the course. Well done.
Thank you!
Nice old piece of history. Good job.
Very Good Shooting! :) Also, nice to see a classic P-38/P1 being used to run the course!
I have three P-38's, one WWII AC Code and two Post-War P-38's. Still shoot them occasionally.
Thank you!
I have a 1941 dated AC code. The finish doesn't look like much, but the groupings at 25 yards slow fire are impressive for such an old war horse.
Awesome! That old thing performed as well as any bottom feeder out there! Love the nostalgia. Great shooting as always HR.
Can you give is the list of other states that you need? Let us see what we can do to help!
Thanks Skip! The list appears at the very end of this video.
Excellent! A friend of mine here in SC just qualified. He is a retired LEO. He used a Glock 26 I think.
I brought P-1 that was a former West Germany Police during 1962 Berlin War Construction. I also brought WW-II German Military Pistol in 1978 from the Gun shop in PA. The old WW-II P-38 I owned were made anf using steel frame and very accurate even I used hallow point. Too bad I sold WW-II 1943 Speebreck version for profit.
That is too bad. I would love to have a WWII version.
That was an awesome course Sir. Also very Cool Walther, Hrfunk !!!!!!!!
Thanks Jerry!
Man, I think it may be time to make a followup video on your weight loss! Youre doing great! I have managed to lose 38lbs in 4 months now. I’m mostly doing the intermittent fasting routine (which is similar to what you described) with some activity but havent joined a gym or anything yet.
Good course of fire and good shooting
Thank you!
I love the P1 and I've lived in SC all of my life. Be ready for that SA second shot. The DA is very heavy and long but atleast on my p1 the SA shots are extremely short, light, and so is the reset. I'm a gunsmith and dealer and from my inspection of my p1 it shows no sign of having a trigger job done to it. All the wear seems to just be from "functionality friction" that has polished the parts. Also my uncle (now retired) was one of the firearms qualifications instructors at the academy for SC. He could likely tell me which county/counties use this course of fire for qualifications. Honestly the p1 basically feels like a single stack 92fs. Great pistol and great video BTW.
Thank you. The SA trigger on the P1 in the video was very short and light too. I had to be careful when I was shooting it to not fire an unintentional shot. All in all it was a very cool firearm, and I'm glad I had the opportunity to shoot it on this course. Thanks for watching!
Far less views than deserved. Great videos!
Thank you Ronald!
One of the oldest & best 9mm pistols ever produced ! Outstanding.
Yep. I agree!
It was me that suggested this to Mr Funk, I felt real good he actually did this most of the time i get laughed at . I carry one of these and use it regularly for IDPA. Mr Funk thanks from the bottom of my heart , your a excellent shot , my 2nd best favorite so far being the M1 rifle you used for a LE qual test. my next favorite best so far was the Smith model 10 revolver. I want to shoot as good as you some day when i grow up .LOL job well done gives me hope that a old gun still can be useful. Limited to 8 rds. I would behind in IDPA to begin with. but heyyyy. somebody gots to do it. Thanks Mr funk your my hero!
Ha, ha! I'm nobody's hero! I was glad to run this course with the P-38 and I appreciate your suggesting I do it. One of the great things about my little youtube adventure is the interaction it affords me with so many great people. When I get good feedback and/or suggestions, it makes for interesting videos AND, in cases like this, it gives me the opportunity to gain some experience with a cool historical firearm like the P38 (or P1 as the case may be). Thanks again Mark, and feel free to give me a suggestions any time you like!
Great shooting from both shooter and pistol. A post war P-1 that was used by West German Police up to the 1980's. The German engineering at Walther replaced a "legend" in the Luger P-08. Both are great combat arms. Thanks for the video and your selection of pistol to shoot the course of fire with. A still, very viable, combat arm the Walther P-1.
You’re welcome. Thanks for watching!
HR, after seeing this video, it got me thinking about how a Zastava M57 would do in one of your tests. It's a copy of the TT-33 Tokarev pistol which was Russia's answer to the 1911 pistol and fires the 7.62x25mm Tokarev round. You can find them relatively inexpensively through mil surp suppliers. Just thought I'd throw this suggestion out there!
That’s a great suggestion, but I don’t know if I’ll be able to conjure one up. Then again, I didn’t think I was going to come up with a P-38, so who knows? Stay tuned!
That'd be very cool. Something a little different would be awesome. Who knows what you could learn about yourself & your abilities shooting these courses, esp w/a pistol that you're not so accustom to. I'd love to try myself 👍
I've seen TT-33 variants with either a frame mounted or slide mounted manual safeties (original Soviet TT-33 having none). Being single action only I think HR would like need a little practice with the manual of arms as I'm not sure either safety engages like a 1911, or Browning HP. At least he'd have a button release for reloads however.
I'm glad to see this run on a real target. We shot this on B-27s and any hit on the silhouette counted. People still failed! Looking forward to your video!
Thanks, I hope you like it!
What up bud I've seen u while on Jake Moore's facebook page in the comments b4
On that very first shot-when it missfired the saftey/decocker lever was not correctly in the fire position- the first hammerfall moved it into the right position-so then the second triggerpull worked. You can see the lever moving up when it missfired. The lever might have been moved slightly out of position while drawing the gun out of the holster. This is a typical thing that can happen with the P38 and also with the PP/PPK 's
Thanks. In any case the second strike solved the problem.
There's a trick to the heel button. You 'snap' the magazine out. Drag the pad of your middle finger down the frontstrap, hook the front of the floorplate, push the release with your thumb, tilt the butt forward a bit and snap your fingers. Of course, in a single fluid motion.
Thanks. I’ll remember that!

You're welcome!
Im laid up for a couple weeks, so Ive been hitting all your videos 😉
Reminder Set 💨🔫😀👍🏼
Now we are going to need one of these with your opening cap and ball rig!
Ha, ha! Maybe I’ll put it in the next time I update the intro!
Good shooting sir. The time limits were a little tight. This would have been a good course for a revolver.
Thanks! I considered using a wheelgun on this one before I was able to borrow the P1.
Great job under the pressure of the buzzer Howard, a misfire would throw many off.
Thank you Bert!
Excellent shooting as always. It’s too hot to fish already. I think inspired me to head to the range for some shooting myself.
Have fun Ben!
Always look forward to your videos! Very thorough and informative. Keep up the great work!
Will do! Thanks for watching Alexander!
There’s the old saying: “Always expect the unexpected.” A P-38/P-01 was completely unexpected... and very cool!😀
Thanks Logica! I’m glad you liked it. Who knows what the next video might feature?
Thoroughly enjoyed it. I know I am dating myself, but I first saw that P-38 on the Man From U.N.C.L.E in the 60’s. I was a kid and thought it was a neat gun, especially when they added a stock to it. Can’t wait to see what you come up with next.
Thanks Jay! I’m glad you liked it!
I'm curious to know how many rounds does the p38 hold in the mags and great shooting and thanks for making awesome vids
Thank you! The P-38 has an 8-round magazine.
Unless they have some unusual way of calculating a score, I think you cheated yourself a little bit there Brother. If I was following along correctly, you put 48 out of 50 shots in the scoring area within prescribed time frames. Wouldn't that be a 96% rather than 90%? Good shooting with an old gun. The last one I fired had a horrendous DA trigger and tiny sights, so your performance proves once again that it is the Indian, not the arrow that counts most.
I'm having a terrible time with math here lately! Thanks for correcting my score Brother! This P-1 had the same type of sights and trigger as you described. One viewer asked me why it seemed like I was taking so long to fire the first shot on some of these stages. I told him that I was trying to acquire a sight picture with those very fine sights and simultaneously manage the heavy D/A trigger. The shot I threw out in the arm from behind cover was one time I failed in that effort!
The ammo is stored in climate controlled conditions...surprising, but an excellent example of what could happen and how to respond. There is so much nonsense today from younger shooters about "obsolete s/a d/a handguns versus Glock, Glock, Glock. Perfect example of the advantage, at least in this instance, of second strike capability. The Walther designs served the euro military and police excellently for many years. Nicely done sir!
Thank you Edward!
Great Shootin HR. Cool looking firearm.. the timer surprised me. and 2 seconds on the first one... Whew.. Thats fast. . Good Job
Thank you!
Good course and good video. That second strike came in handy.
Yes it did! Thanks for watching!
Good course of fire. With the requirement of a couple failure drills at 7 or 10 yards it would be very good. Nice work with the P1.
Thank you!
Great video and course of action! Though I’m not to sure how many police departments used a Kraut weapon as there duty gun.
I was using it more to show how the older designs can still perform on a modern course.
kudos once again. You've certainly shown that old does not mean ineffective!
If old means ineffective, then I’m in trouble! Thanks for watching!
@@hrfunk 73 here, still effective. (insert smiley face)
Thanks for bringing us along again HR. I really liked this course round and agree it had a great deal of variety within the stages of fire. I also really appreciated seeing the Walther run the course. Do you know how much the owner shoots this gun? Perhaps an examination of that round after the misfire would have given an idea of the problem, for example light primer strike. Did you clean the gun before the course or examine it for any obvious problems related to cleaning? Anyway, thanks for another interesting video!
Knowing the owner, I believe both the pistol and the ammunition are properly stored and maintained. I think the misfire was just one of those random things thrown down from the shooting gods for their amusement. Thanks for watching Kevin!
I had a very "interesting" introduction to the P-38 pistol many, many years ago. At a local IPSC event, they sprung a course of fire on us that required us to leave our personal pistol on the table behind the line. There were three targets arranged at between 15 and 25 yards. At the TEN yard line was a 200 lb. dummy wearing a loaded P-38 in a military flaptop holster, and secured by a lanyard to the "body"! The sadistic so-and-so who came up with that was a collector, and owned the P-38 in question, which was actually wartime surplus with Wermacht markings. I'll tell ya, THAT course certainly flattened the curve between the shooters and the gamers that day... you should have seen the looks on the faces of the guys with the fancy expensive full-race setups!
Ha, ha! I’ll bet! I think I would have enjoyed that course.
Using the second strike capability was a brillant move, solved the malfunction faster than a tap rack.
That's the beauty of that system. Thanks for watching!
@@hrfunk absolutely, acts just like a revolver in its first stage of fire!
You are shooting a p1 without the reinforced slide. Have you shot plus p rounds in it?
No. I would only shoot this pistol with standard pressure ammunition.
Curious if the ammo was fmj or hollow point. Some P38 pistols are picky. This appears to be an early post war P1, it lacks the roll pin in the frame to avoid frame bartering and cracking. I would avoid plus p ammo in this pistol. I have a P4 which is a small run of the P1with a 4 inch barrel. These old pistols can hold their own , and for most purposes 8 plus one will do. I mean soldiers did go to war with these. I never found the heel mag release to be that big of a deal All in all you showed that if this is the pistol you have, it can still do the deed
Yep. The P-38/P-1 will still do what it was intended to do. The ammo in this video was standard pressure FMJ.
With firearm availability decreasing , and prices of new ones going off the charts, it may be worth looking at some older firearms again. They did and still can serve , like this Walther as viable home defense firearms. They may be larger and heavier than newer polymer pistols and mice pistols, but they are more pleasant to shoot and are accurate enough. One of my buddies loves his Sig 365. Fact is it is small, and holds 10+1. Fact is however for civilian self defense the general rule is the rule of 3. 3 yards or less, 3 shots , 3 seconds. Most of the time. I carry a 2 inch 38, or Colt Mustang 380 in a pocket holster. If I need to go bigger, An old S&W 3913 8 plus 1 is fine. Out in the woods it will be a Single or Da revolver, 357 or 45. Could see some shooting evaluations putting the old firearms against high tech tipper ware for self defense scenarios.
I’ve produced some videos like that. I also featured quite a few vintage pistols and revolvers in the qualification series. Maybe I’ll see if I can come up with a good premise to makes a few more comparison videos.
Thank you..love the p38..👍
Thanks Mark!
My math isn't very good but if you got 48 out of 50, shouldn't that be a 96% instead of the 90% you stated? Good shooting
Yes. Sometimes doing math in my head “on the fly” doesn’t work out all that well.
Great video as always, I enjoy these videos Semper Fi
Thank you! Semper Fi!
Its' not the gun that matters..its' the shooter that matters...
This is a great series.
Thank you!
Thinking about evaluation of the course, you probably need to add one on course administration. Last week exposed a weakness of being difficult for an instructor to conduct with a large group of officers. Another weakness could be requiring a specific target. What if that target suddenly becomes unavailable? A course should have a number of options for target with a scoring method for each. If targets become unavailable, you either have to adapt or not shoot. If you adapt, then you have to be prepared to justify in court what you did if there is a use-of-force incident.
I'm sensitive to this because I remember trying to procure ammunition in 2009-10. It was legally impossible to get ammo. We had to buy from state contracts. It took longer than a year for an order to be filled, but a P.O. was only good for a year. I ended up having to borrow ammo from another agency. And that was reman FMJ so it wasn't proper "duty ammo" that the State regs required. But it was the best we could do and we only shot once that year.
Your points are well taken (I remember waiting nearly a year for one of our ammo orders to arrive). From an evaluation standpoint, however, I’m not sure how to quantify “flexibility”. I’ll have to give that some thought.
Just goes to show that just because it's OLD doesn't mean that it's not EFFECTIVE. Great video, well done on the course. 👍I believe the first round failure was possibly just a bad primer. At any cost, as you pointed out, Second Strike Capability was beneficial.
Ha, ha! Are you describing the firearm or the shooter?
@@hrfunk Lol! I think it applies to Both in this situation! 🤣👍
@Sierra Bravo The M2 Heavy Machine Gun has been in front line military service for 95 consecutive years and it is still the standard by which all other Heavy Machine Guns are measured.
@@Rif_Leman Thank God for John Moses Browning! The Ma Deuce just keeps chugging along, and will probably never be replaced. There's no need too.👍🏻
I'd like to see you shoot one of the qualifications with a 9mm Baretta PX4 Storm and hear your opinion of the pistol. I've enjoyed the series of qualifications.
Thanks Mark! I have no experience at all with a PX4. That alone is sufficient motivation to try one out. If I can get ahold of one, you’ll see it in a video!
Great Idea on a excellent pistol that is underrated. Guess because its not a striker fired design. I'll admit that I am a Beretta fan boy though.
@@hrfunk I wish I lived in your state, I'd loan you mine!

😏🙄
[ Interesting video!
Thanks.
Walther P-38 is a great machine!! ]
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
Yup. Someone should clone them or S&W could at least reissue with cheaper to make polymer frame
Someone did clone them. They are called S&W model 39👍
It seems like it’s taking you forever to break the fist shot (compared to your usual.) Are the sights really small or something? Grip angle weird? I’ve always wanted to shoot one of these.
There are two things contributing to that. Yes, the sights are very fine and the notch in the rear sight is particularly narrow. Also, the double-action trigger is pretty heavy, so what you see is me trying to find my sight picture and manage that DA pull.
Here’s the question: In a real life situation, would you have done the “tap, rack, bang” action, or pulled the trigger twice? This is assuming you had a semiauto pistol with second strike capability. Great Job, Chief! 👍🇺🇸
Thanks Frank! The second trigger pull in the video was basically reflexive. If I did that in real life, assuming the cartridge fired on the second strike, the problem would be solved without need of further remedy. On the other hand, if I had time to think about it, I would probably perform the TRB drill and get a fresh round into the chamber.
I like it better when you don’t show the completed target in the thumbnail. I like to be surprised to see the results.
That’s actually not the completed target. It’s the target as it looked about half way through the course.
Have any of the courses so far used multiple targets per shooter?
Not yet, but I’ve got some coming.
I thought that was a pretty good course. 75% to pass may be a little low though maybe 80% would be a little better. Another classic weapon added to the list, P38 was a great idea. I did carry a Sig P232 for several years, the only Sig I ever liked, and it had the heel release. With some practice it could be reloaded reasonably fast. Faster than a revolver but slower than my other autos. Another one I wish I hadn't sold.
Yeah, the heal release caused me some trouble. Admittedly, though, if I practiced with it I’m sure I would improve. Thanks for watching James!
I am looking into buying a post war Walther P1, should I get one with out the reinforced slide?
It porobably wouldn't be a bad idea.
i guess that would be better but the original slides have a more classic look
Good shooting
Thank you Steven!
In the immediate aftermath of a gun battle my concern is an officer may forget to decock before reholstering. While I realize this is a training issue my own street experience, albeit dated to revolver days, tells me these weapons should be avoided, at least for law enforcement officers. Damn good shooting w/that relic though.
Thank you!
great videos
Thank you!
Is it safe to fire 115 Grn hollow points through a Walther P1?
Yes. So long as they’re standard pressure loads.
@@hrfunk I thought so. But better to be safe than sorry.
Thanks, George
@@geadkins966 I've ran 115 FMJ exclusively and it runs them great. I'm going to try looking for 124 grain for my next batch however. Reasoning is that while it'll run 115; I'm hoping that I can get slightly less kick from upping my grain. The P38 historically was also tested and designed around 124 grain bullets. I've read from a couple folks that said they had easier shot placement on that too.
Did South Carolina carry the P 38?
Not that I know of. I had a request from a viewer to use the P38 on this course.
I was being facetious....
Any agency/agencies use an Glock 19?

Enjoyed the older vintage videos. Getting old. Don’t find the newer designs terribly appealing, feel striker pistols are less safe than a conventional da/sa or even 1911. Partial to the older S&W designs based on the 39 series.
Those are getting harder to find. People who have them tend to hold onto them.
