  • Interpretation of a folk dance that originates from Mindanao, Philippines. Done by Kababayang Pilipino Cultural Performing Arts Group, based in Vancouver, Canada. Recorded in Monção on 07/08/2016. Description of the dance below:
This dance is called Singkil and it’s a retelling of an episode from the Darangen epic. This section of the story recounts the abduction of a princess and her rescue by a prince. If I remember correctly, the princess was kidnapped and trapped in a forest by angry spirits. An earthquake hits, and the trees start falling down, endangering the princess. The prince finds out about the situation, and he tries to save the princess by plunging into the collapsing forest to find her. He does eventually meet the princess amidst the chaos, and the two of them flee the forest together. In the dance, the princess is the woman in gold waving a pair of fans, while a loyal maidservant shields her head with an umbrella. The prince is the man waving the sword, slashing down trees in his pursuit of the princess. The clacking bamboo rods on the floor are the fallen trees and other obstacles that the prince and princess have to dodge, and the thundering drums are the earthquake.

I love the fact that this and most Filipino ethnic dances are dead but always evolving and being lent to interpretation. You can watch it from 3 different groups and they would dance it 3 different ways. Great kulintang and drum playing! Mabuhay!

The stage is too small for the proper execution of this dance
