Case Closed: ESP Is Real | Mitch Horowitz speaking at Hereticon, 2022

  • As we enter the third decade of the 21st century, one longstanding scientific and philosophic controversy can be laid to rest: extrasensory perception, or ESP, is real. We have amassed overwhelming and replicable evidence that renders ESP denialism a position of sentiment rather than science. In his presentation at Hereticon in Miami Beach on January 12, 2022, PEN Award-winning historian Mitch Horowitz describes the facts around ESP research-and explores why our intellectual culture has been temporarily deterred from accepting them. Sound-bite skepticism and polemically skewed coverage-especially on Wikipedia-cannot, finally, dispel the excellence and repeatability of decades of academic ESP research. Our generation, Mitch explains, is poised for a breakthrough in understanding.
Special thanks to Michael Solana, VP of Founders Fund, for the invitation and introduction.
Mitch delves further into ESP research in his forthcoming book, Daydream Believer (July 2022): www.amazon.com...

As a scientist who has spent the last 15 years rigorously studying precognition and retrocausal effects in biology, psychology, and now physics -- I have to say I am grateful to Mitch for this talk. It's very frustrating showing the same results over and over again and people just saying, "nope."

As a physicist, I find such a great puzzlement that good experimental data is just sidetracked and obfuscated for the sake of the fact that it cannot be contained in standard theoretical framework of current natural sciences.
A lot of normal science, even "hard natural sciences", is far away from the standards of openness than the best of parapsychology.
It is just so damn frustrating.

And that puzzlement extends to many important events in todays culture around physics and medicine.

Incredible talk. I just discovered this video…I’ve been dreaming and seeing the future my entire life. Predicting deaths of loved ones, important people and moments in my life, deja vu’s…I have years worth of personal accounts. I feel like I’m tapped in, but have never fully went down this rabbit hole. It’s calling me quite loudly now…more than ever before. I’ve repeated some of these ESP tests without even being aware that they’ve been done before and I’ve had similar results.
Is there a way we can get into contact?

Mr.Horowitz, I am from Ukraine and I can tell you lots of stories from my own experience about ESP. It is my family experience (both from Mother's and Father's side). I don't know why I am writing this exactly, but there is no such thing in our world that would not occur without human egregor or ESP, or whatever people call it. In some cases in can be like a curse for a person to be aware of strange things.
Lots of cases of precognition of phone calls. It is real. Especially, concerning a loved one.
Maybe all of it is experience, but it is too out of statistics.
At the beginning of this summer I was at night shift (though I got 2 diplomas, our countries is weird enough for a person with two University diplomas to work in such a way). The alarm on the phone turned on and I felt something truly bad. So I just went to the shelter. And mystically, the moon was right above the horizon with the reddish color. I even tried to film it. I stayed in shelter even after the air-raid alarm turned off and in the morning at 04.51 we had 3 rockets exploded some 100 meters away from us. I don't know what it is, but it was not an anxiety problem. And this thing is what we should train.

Popular culture may be biased against the existence of ESP, but because there is a part of us which exists outside of linear time, humanity (and, I believe, other animals, such as my cats, who - as my son reported - would start toward the front door of my fourth floor apartment a minute or two before I returned home from work, no matter how irregular the hours) will always experience precognition. Cultural bias is no match for the extraordinary abilities that make us human, and it cannot suppress the experiments or the findings on these phenomena forever.

Never heard of you before this. Very interesting talk. I have a uni psych level background, so I love my stats and science. At the same time I grew up with abilities... mostly remote viewing. I have described details of missing people, ie, location of evidence, what rooms look like, details of properties, etc, which turned out to be hit after hit. I would like to believe it's all fantasy, that I'm just crazy, but when you can provide very specific details and all of them are hits, it ... well, I'm into stats, how do I account for that. To disbelieve something is going on becomes the greater effort.
I would like to ask something about the zener cards. When I was in my teens, I was able to get my hands on a pack. I would mostly get within chance, but I noticed something peculiar about my guesses. Say I picked circle, it would be a miss, say a square. The next card, I would say a cross and it would be a circle. Etc. It would be very frustrating, it felt like I was predicting one card ahead. I could see a pattern but I didn't know what to make of it...still don't. Wonder if you came across something like this?

I think 20-billion-dollar funding during 20+ years by itself is a sufficient reason to include the story in such a good presentation about the power of censorship. Anyways, well done!

As an experiencer of anomalous cognition and someone who has validated it in my own life, I can attest to the reality of ESP. Mitch's talk was at once excellent and a little depressing. Think how humanity will change once the truth of ESP is accepted by academia. If ESP, then what are the implications for how I curate my thoughts?

    • @HarryPotter-kb7we

When a new phenomenon, or disease, is found, scientists will listen to the people about their experience, how they feel, what are their perceived symptons, etc... They will also run tests with the same goal in mind, but increased reliability of the information. Then they will notice patterns, and these patterns will inspire then into thinking of possible experiments, explanations and solutions. With ESP it should be the same. Listen to the people. Run tests. Notice patterns. Use these patterns to plan how you will aproach the subject.

Watched the talk and greatly appreciated it. But it's probably just going to preach to the choir. The next question is to understand: what is the cause of irrational resistance to claims of the paranormal?
Most people I believe are neutral or unemotional to the subject and will go on with the rest of their day five minutes later after hearing the information. But then there are those that will not have it and they are too often leading academics.

I had lost contact with him for years and did not know he was in a relationship. I never thought about him. Don't ruin their daydream. As someone who used to believe this nonsense, trust me, evidence of existence/non-existence does not matter. Belief in the paranormal is a belief system. They WANT it to be real, so anybody vaguely intelligent who claims it is, will be held up in high regard. And likewise, if someone claimed the opposite, and had better evidence to back it up - it wouldn't matter. You just have to agree to be accepted, reality and hard evidence is of no interest to these people. (Confirmation bias)
And before anybody asks me for evidence, no - you are making the claim that ESP is real - so YOU back it up. (Burden of proof)
