As a solo gamer myself, I'm super happy and excited to see a lot of amazing games I've enjoyed this year on this list. Fantastic list Mike always excited to see this list come out each year.
So glad Resist is not only on your list Mike, but at the penultimate spot! Been championing this game from jump on Gamefound and it does not disappoint. After months of playing now, it has become my overall favorite solo game!
Agreed. So fun! I’m only now starting to win after about half a dozen plays. I still haven’t integrated the event cards into the game yet. Siege of Valeria is a blast!
Absolutely love Lands of Galzyr, really did not fancy it when I first looked at it, but took the punt and so glad I did. Loving the game, my wife and I find it very cathartic
_Hoplomachus:_ _Victorum_ arrived just before the end of the year, and even after just one full playthrough it's my favorite solo game of 2022. It has a great mix of dice-based combat, route planning, and variety of opponents and arenas. The game also does a really good job of making you feel like you're playing a legendary warrior surrounded by loyal (but alas, far less durable) companions, traveling through the ancient world. My runner-up (if only because I have only scratched the surface on it so far) is the HEXplore It campaign book, _Klik's_ _Madness._ *WOW!* It takes what is sort of a sandbox style game and gives it a huuuuge, overarching prequel story. It may be the most detailed, expansive, and downright incredible campaign book for a board game (or heck, for an RPG) that I've read. I can't imagine how much work they put into it.
Originally I never thought I would even think about getting twilight inscription. But now that you mentioned it can be done solo…I might take a look at it! Although from what I remember the dice tower did not like it more than twilight imperium.
I was so surprised that HEAT: pedal to the metal didn’t make the list. The Ai is super easy to run, and makes for very tight races. I would never play without the Ai even in multiplayer. Great fun game. Equally in solo!
Lands of Galzyr-tried to find it. Kickstarter is closed and it is not available anywhere in the USA any time soon. I think it won’t be available until summer, maybe.
Given how you've felt in the past about other Cole games, its a shame that John Company 2E didn't end up here (or even get played?). It's definitely one of the best solo experiences this year, and in my opinion is one of the year's best releases period.
It’s too much to put up with honestly. It’s challenging enough to play it multiplayer but to learn the Crown rules requires you to basically learn another game on top of it. I like solo games but noped out of that
@@ilqrd.6608 The AI pulls off negotiation better than any other solo game I know of, so yeah, that takes some complexity that isn't always appetizing. But given that the 1710 Long scenario is still about 2 hours solo and the weight is still 4+/5....the AI complexity isn't out of place at all. Also, FWIW, I'm at 15 games solo and I can basically run the AI without even looking in the Crown Handbook. The only thing I still need to reference are the tables.
This is the list I was waiting for....just wish it were a bit longer. Honestly, pretty surprising list. But I wonder how many were left off for inclusion in the main list, that he still also enjoys solo. Because I don't believe there was crossover between the two, if I remember correctly.
The only crossover between the lists was Lands of Galzyr. The other games on my top 10 of the year that play solo either weren’t played solo by me, or not played solo enough to feel comfortable adding it to this list (Endless Winter: Paleoamericans, Flamecraft).
@@michaeldilisio557 That's good to know! I did like Endless Winter solo, that was actually the main one I was wondering about with you. I think it's well done in feel, but way too easy (although I heard there's a harder variant on BGG). And it's a lot of game setup especially for solo, but I don't mind that part as much.
I wonder if Mike played Massive Darkness 2 solo yet? I know Tom played the heck out of it and I've played it a bunch this week, it's a really, really solid solo game! I'm also on-board with Mike on Twilight Inscription, that games great solo. In fact, the way voting works in the solo and two-player matches is much better, in my opinion, that the way it works in games with 3+ players. So much so that I have a house rule to use the solo voting rules in higher player counts now.
I’m reading Batman: Dark Knight Returns doesn’t have replayability and is pretty easy once one has beaten it. If this is true, that’s quite unfortunate for a solo game. I wonder if Mike Dilisio has finished the game and what he thinks of it after playing it a second time? I’m a big fan of the graphic novel but I’m on the fence on this one.
I’ve played through the campaign multiple times, and have played the one-off scenarios multiple times as well. I don’t personally find replay value lacking in the game at all. I also find the difficulty to be just what I look for in a cooperative game: challenging without feeling overly punishing. This of course is a matter of personal taste. Some people want solo games to be very difficult (20-30% win rate for example), but I prefer it in the 50% rate if possible.
@@michaeldilisio557 Hey Mike, thank you so much for generously responding with this comment. It’s good to hear you find the replayability good. I think I’ll give it a shot. I do love the graphic novel and am going to play through the game with my wife, who loves comics / manga but has never read this classic. I think she’ll dig that. Also she doesn’t like games to be too hard, so this might be perfect. Keep up the great work - love your content.
Mike's #1 for the year was Endless Winter, it has a solo mode, and it's not on this list. Can I interpret that as it's NOT a good solo mode (I've heard mixed things), or he's only focusing on games that were more "designed" for solo/co op?
@@thedicetower Okay, thanks for getting back to me! I always take your opinions strongly into account when making my solo purchases, so I was eager for your thoughts.
The look of the board for Dark Knight Returns has always turned me off. The more I hear about the game play though, the more I think I will grab it from my local game store.
This year was meh for solo if and only if you don't care about games with minis like me. Only stellarion this year was worth the buy. Really don't get how resist came to the top its a great game for sure but sooo samey, wish they had a way to vary the game not through those stupid scenarios that for me taste worth nothing
This is easily my favorite list every year! I love seeing solo gaming get the spotlight!
Thanks so much for the kind words on Resist!, Mike!

Thank you, Mike. Hope you had a splendid Christmas. Really looking forward to Resist. Hope it gets a UK release soon.

The only top 10 of the year list that matters! 🙂
If I may: #11 Heat: P to the M; #12 Star Wars The Clone Wars (pandemic).
Every time I’m in the mood for a solo game I keep coming back to the GI Joe Deck Building Game. It’s the most fun I’ve ever had playing a game solo
Thanks for putting this together, Mike! I've added a bunch of games to my wishlist :)
So excited to see Lands of Galzyr on your list, Mike! And even more so it being so high up there. 😊
The more I play it, the higher it rises in my esteem.

Excellent video, thanks! All of these look great.
Where's the official "Mike DeLisio solo board games" theme song? I love that tune! "Takes one down and plays it by himself...."
I was so surprised that HEAT: pedal to the metal didn’t make the list. The Ai is super easy to run, and makes for very tight races.
I would never play without the Ai even in multiplayer.
Great fun game. Equally in solo!
Disagree, it made me feel profoundly sad. Much of what gives Heat life is the multiplayer aspect. The bots are easy but it doesn’t make for a fun game
Great video. As usual from mike
I think I'll checkout twilight inscription
Thanks for the list
