- Éamon de Valera led Ireland through the War of Independence and many view his actions around the Treaty debates as leading to the Civil War. He would go on to found one of the most successful political parties in Western Europe and establish the Irish Constitution through which he continues to cast a long shadow over modern Irish society. But who was he and how did he rise to power in the years before the Irish Revolution?

If Collins hid away as much as that coward we’d still be under English rule.
What I would love no more than to wear a black beret in Ireland for the day or even before Ireland becomes home rule once again from the English government. My grandad was a Casement and it’s a name I’m so proud of. I was born in Scotland but my heart lives in Ireland. I love everything Irish and just wish I can see the beautiful Emerald Isle and my wish is fulfilled one day Huh maybe the English government will shoot me before then if they see this comment. Say what you want about Eamon De Valera, but he rejected the democratic will of the people when it came to the Anglo Irish Treaty. He oversaw a Civil War that killed more Irish people than the war of Independence, and led to the assassination of Michael Collins, the man the Irish had elected to be their leader. For that reason I am not surprised that he has been given the appropriate title of Ireland’s hated hero. He was truly as disgrace
When I come to the Civil War we'll see that it's a lot more complicated than that. The IRA rejected the Treaty, seized the Four Courts and sidelined de Valera; Liam Lynch considered replacing him as "President of the Republic" because he kept arguing for peace. He objected to plans to kill Michael Collins, warning that they would not be able to negotiate with the men who came after him and as soon as Lynch was killed he was able to push through the "dump arms" order. Not without blame in Ireland's woes but he wasn't the sole cause of the Civil War starting and a lot of the good he did is overlooked by certain writers and movies.
The Irish Nation Lives i agree with the points you have made, but many civil war veterans stated that they only joined the anti treaty side because De Valera supported it. He may not have been responsible for what happened during the war, but he was definitely responsible for ‘throwing petrol on the fire’ so to speak, and getting the war started in the first place
Once the IRA came out against the Treaty before the debates even began the Civil War was pretty much inevitable. They didn't care what way the debates went and the likes of Rory O'Connor were angry that the Irish people, who hadn't taken part in the War of Independence, should be given a say on the Treaty.
I think his Document No. 2 would have maintained army and political unity but he was utterly blind to the fact that the British would not accept it. His rejection of the Treaty definitely helped some people decide which side they would fight on but the Civil War was started by the men in the Four Courts and those who shelled it. Lots of those on the Pro-Treaty side only joined because of Collins; members of the Squad were involved in the Ballyseedy massacre.
I'm not trying to absolve de Valera of blame but I do think he receives too much of it for the Civil War. My goal for this series is to challenge the accepted narrative. I'm already nervous about the amount of work to be done on the videos at the end of next year!

DeValera was the greatest Irish leader in the past 100 years. We could do with him today more than ever.

As the comment below mentions he rejected the democratic vote of the dail and then the will of the people when the election clearly showed an overwhelming support for pro treaty. Never mind his treatment of women and his association with the catholic church
I'm already dreading this time next year when we come to the Treaty negotiations, debates and the start of the Civil War! The IRA came out before the Dáil vote and said they would not accept the Treaty. Pushing the Treaty through pretty much guaranteed a Civil War. Collins only released the articles of the Free State Constitution the morning of the General Election because he knew there would be severe opposition to it. We also have to remember that de Valera was given massive majorities in the 30's to dismantle the Treaty. It's a very complicated subject!

What do you think of the allegation that he deliberately sent Collins (instead of himself) to London to negotiate, considering he would fail ? When Collins accepted the 26 counties and not the 32 of all-Ireland, de Valera pulled out and started the Irish Civil War out of spite.

It wasn't out of spite. It was his plan all along.
I believe he was a spook, he killed Collins to prevent him continuing and going after the North counties.
Negotiations are literally that, you give us this, we give you that. He knew exactly what was going to happen. We don't even know who he is or if he's actually Irish.
