I just learned about Slade in 2014. Better late than never because they were incredible. They didn’t make it big in the US, maybe because they were upbeat and a bit goofy at a time the US was mired in some tough, very serious issues. I wish more Americans were aware of Slade.

Slade are one of this country's greatest and one of the most shamefully ignored group of musicians there has ever been.
Everyone (of a certain age) knows their wonderful commercial pop songs for singles, but get into those deeper cuts on the albums and the quality of the songs and song writing goes much deeper and there really is some Beatles-level stuff going on in there.
I think "Slade In Flame" deserves to be in the top 100 best British rock albums ever, it's just a beautiful album of music from start to finish.
I should also say that I was lucky enough to be at Reading Festival in 1980 when Slade were brought in as last minute replacements when Blizzard Of Ozz pulled out and there was an expectation that they would probably be "canned off" by the crowd - there's also a legendary story in their book where they apparently had trouble getting into the site because none of the security people knew who they were!
But, as a lot of people already know, that live set they did was just STUNNING, the whole crowd went ABSOLUTELY CRAZY from start to finish and they just blew off everyone else that had been at Reading Festival that weekend. It also re-launched their careers at that point too, deservedly so and we then had the "We'll Bring The House Down" album and beyond.
I really can never speak highly enough of Slade - they just were four truly outstanding musicians and songwriters - what a band!

Hi Terry, totally agree as I was also at Reading in 1980, after 3 days of heavy metal everything was starting to sound the same then Slade came on! Best band of the weekend! Also agree that Slade in Flame is a terrific album. Phil :)

@@NowSpinningMagazine I'd love to see a video just looking at some of the deep cuts on those Slade albums, I think all of their albums have loads of really great non-single songs on them - they really are a shamefully ignored band except by those of us who really know what they are about.

@@jogischulz2576 Hi Jogi. When I was about age 11 or 12 in the mid-1970's, I was lucky enough to have a best friend (and we're still best friends) who had two older brothers into rock music - it's going through their record collection that has made me the rock lover that I am today.
In that collection were Slade Alive, Uriah Heep's "The Magician's Birthday", Savoy Brown's "Hellbound Train", Chicken Shack's "Imagination Lady", Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come "Journey" as well as the usual Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath stuff.
So these are all very cherished albums by me, and, yes, I know Slade were popular in Germany - I think I've a few bootleg recordings of Slade in Germany somewhere.
But can I also thank Germany for wonderful bands like Epitaph, Eloy, Anyone's Daughter, Birth Control, Fargo, Victory and Nektar (British but living in Germany back then), as well as the "usual suspects" like Scorpions and Accept.
I am currently going through a "Brain Records" phase and looking at the bands that were on their catalogue - which, of course, includes early Scorpions and Embryo.
      And greetings from the UK.

Keep the playlists coming, Phil. The term that you use, DEEP PURPLE FAMILY, is very touching and inspirational for us Purple fans. In fact, the legacy of Deep Purple has never faded away after 5 decades. Not even the Beatles or The Rolling Stones inspire this kind of bond among rock music fans, especially here in East Asia. I love your review of Status Quo recordings. Very often they are greatly overlooked here in Malaysia. It is my observation that even when punk/new wave was all the rage in the UK, sales of their records never diminished. All their late seventies and eighties albums sold very well.

1979 was a spectacular year for albums, but one that gets overlooked is also Purple-connected: Nick Simper's Fandango's Slipstreaming. It wasn't easy to find, but I was so glad to have it. The opening track, Candice Larene, was another Stargazer! So atmospheric and eerie. You were transported to that wooded hill, where Candice Larene's spectre "stares straight through you in the cold moonlight". The next song, Rocky Road Blues, is a complete change, a very good-time song about driving adventures. Honestly, this album was up there with Down to Earth, Lovehunter and Mr Universe. We also had Hunter/Ronson's You're Never Alone with a Schizophrenic, Thin Lizzy's Black Rose, Bad Company's Desolation Angels, Led Zeppelin's In Through the Out Door, and the awesome UFO double live album. What a year!

Hi John, thank you and welcome aboard! I have started a video series here called 'Music for Mental Health' where I talk about how music has helped me. I also think our passions and interests for things can wane if we do not allow enough space in our lives for our interests to breathe. I feel one the main ingredients is keeping a sense of wonder. So that opening track from the album that got you ready for Friday night, those feelings are still in there. My passion and enthusiasm is still growing and I think this is because I am meeting more and more people who feel the same. However, it is normal for some albums to lose their appeal but I have found as I get older I can see even the most played as diary entries in my life. Music is an art collection we carry around in our hearts and minds. It is as unique as we are. Phil

I was intrigued both with them and this episode, when discussing Whitesnake you went from Saints and Sinner's to Whitesnake 1987(still of the night) missing out Slide it in. I do agree with you there is a before and after Whitesnake. Up to and including UK version of Slide it in , they were a sensational heavy blues orientated rock band. USA version Slide it in onwards DC changed Whitesnake into a now Glam rock band. I believe if you grew up in the UK during 70's/80's and lived with the band growing with each album it became a part of you. For many of us Brits USA version of SII and Whitesnake 1987 was too far removed from those days of Sweet talker etc. Love the content of your shows Phil and I really enjoy giving Martin and Peter s different perspective of the UK rock scene.

After that, I tend to be drawn to the earlier albums ... "Dog of Two Head" and "Spare Parts" I think are better than "Hello" and "Quo" for me.

Having been a Deep Purple fan since 1968 , I was always seeking out any " Purple Family " recordings especially after the end of Mark !! Purple . So I bought all of the Gillan recordings but they didn't resonate with me until " Glory Road " and " Mr. Universe " , two top notch records . Likewise I was a huge Whitesnake fan , but "Ready 'N' Willin " put them over the top for me , probably because the inclusion of Paice and Lord made it the closest thing to a new Deep Purple release . Agree with you that " Saints and Sinners " , outside of a few songs , always felt like a letdown to me . The next generation of Whitesnake left the British style of blues rock and dove headfirst into a bombastic form of rock that I never enjoyed . Give me Moody and Marsden any day ! Paice Ashton Lord is a treasured jewel , and its too bad that this was their only release . They had the potential to become very big . Unlike you , I didn't find rainbow's "On Stage " immediately appealing . As an American , I can assuredly say I don't recall anyone on this side of the ocean being a fan of either Slade or Status Quo .

PS. I love and own all of the other albums you've talked about today, with the exception of one - "1987" by Whitesnake really is now an album that I never need to hear again, unfortunately. It completely overtook the rock airwaves when it was released, and "Whitesnake Version 2" was a complete downgrade from the classic "blues rock" years with that fantastic twin guitar sound of Micky Moody and Bernie Marsden.
This is one reason why I have less time for 1980's music than I do for 1970's music, because a lot of the time 1980's music just dates so quickly and starts to grate on the nerves... albums I never need to hear again are:
Whitesnake - 1987 (and nothing afterwards by Whitesnake)
    Europe - The Final Countdown
Starship - Knee Deep In The Hoop-La
The Cars - anything by them (a good band in their time but just sound so dated now)
Scorpions - Crazy World (because of the bl**dy whistling song!)
Saxon - Destiny (because of bl**dy "Ride Like The Wind" which was great the first few times I heard it but just got played and played and played and I am now sick to death of it)

    • @NowSpinningMagazine
      @NowSpinningMagazine Рік тому +2

We are all different and I see Whitesnake 2 as just that different. I played 1987 yesterday and I have to say I really enjoyed it and can now appreciate the raw power and elegance of Still Of The Night. That track changed everything for Coverdale and I can see why he has stuck to that template ever since.

@@NowSpinningMagazine Don't get me wrong, I did love the album at the time and I was even arguing with friends back then that the "heavy metal" (as we called it back then) version of Whitesnake was better than the original Moody/Marsden version.
But, in my experience, a lot of stuff in the 1980's got overplayed, mainly because of the advent of video and commercial rock music radio stations and they just endlessly played "lowest common denominator" stuff.
"Hair metal" really hasn't stood up to the test of time - I've completely abandoned a lot of that stuff because it just sounds so dated.

C B Restless Heart is way below Whitesnake standard. It was supposed to be a David Coverdale solo album, but the record label insisted it be Whitesnake. Coverdale then had to , as he put it, Snake it up. He himself was never happy with it, but contractual obligations dictated that he towed the line.

`Ready `an Willing` is my favourite Whitesnake album. I think of it a bit like the Beatles `Revolver` as in it`s a midway album which still has it`s roots in the past but is also giving you a look at the future of the band. `Fool for your Loving` is superb and I really love the intro. I love that Hughes Thrall album as well, one of my top AOR records of all time. I guess you can say most British acts are not as popular in US as they are in UK due to lack of touring, lack of a strong managament team etc. Same goes for German bands or Aussie bands. Mainstream US bands are more lucky as , usually, more money is invested in those bands ( that discussion should also touch the subject of cultural imperialism) Anyway thankfully that 70s Corporate Rock structure is largely gone and nowadays a band like Sabaton can headline arenas in UK or some metal band from India can play festivals in Europe. The recordings you have heard are probably from a friend of mine. I was at the show that was filmed. Ritchie was the last one I met so I was a bit relaxed and didn't go complete fanboy. I like your descriptions of the feelings you had as mine were the same as I was born in 1960 and was in school at the same time. You had all those great venues and bands at your fingertips. Birmingham city hall, Manchester city hall, Leicester de Montfort hall, hammersmith odeon and glasgow apollo etc. All the venues i would read reviews about in sounds.i also got to see gillans solo tour of pubs in oz as well as the sweet and uriah heep years later. Basically led zeppelin, deep purple, black sabbath, Nazareth, thin lizzy, ufo, iron maiden, motorhead etc. We're all local bands( you were so fortunate) it was a major undertaking for a band tour australia. But I had some great memories of seeing great bands playing the pubs and venues in and around Sydney during the 1980s. Bands like Midnight oil, cold chisel, rose tattoo, jimmy barnes, the Angels, heaven etc as well as the occasional international tour.
