It was primarily due to their record company (Capitol), and their marketing, but the problem was amplified by lead singer, band founder Doug Fieger (who was ALSO the chief songwriter). Capitol were marketing them as the 'new Beatles', with Feiger being- who else? the 80's John Lennon. That really hurt them. You have to also remember this was happening around the time of Lenon's murder, and any perceived sullying of Lennon was perceived as sancrosanct. As they were (supposed to be) the 'new Beatles', it had to do with his the songs sounding similar to the style of the early BeaTles. In addition to this ( and it only grew - exponentially) somemething which happens to anyone meeting with success - 'others' don't like it, are jealous, etc. If my memory's correct, One problem had to do with specifically to My Sharona, and it's (perceived) misogynistic lyrics. The girl who was the actual 'Sharona', who had gone out with Doug. She made public n(egative )statements about him, as one big part of the 'anti-Knacksters was due They DID have very tight vocals, excellt instrumentation, they were like a perfectly-crafted band, ready for the 80s. People thought they were WAY too similar to the BeaTles, and unlike the outright thievery of most sampling, similarity (of their songs and sound) is one way to demonstrate admiration, and a 'debt', so to speak, for their groundbreaking work. I remember them - at that time - VERY well, and I don't recall any reviewer( esp in the American music press in the big markets) saying they're 'terrible' simply due to their skinny ties and dress. The Knack was my first real rock 'n' roll love affair. The music, not the guys. Born 9/66. They were very special and they helped keep rock alive much like the Ramones. The one exception is that long but undeniable solo on "My Sharona" I wouldn't change a thing.
I'm trying to figure out why this band wasn't more successful. I was a senior in high school in '79 when "Get The Knack" came out. I was thoroughly discoed out by then and so when this group hit, I thought they were destined for greatness. I saw them live in Chicago and they rocked the place! RIP Doug Feiger! There'll never be another Knack!
I think they just flamed out early. Sharona and Good Girls were so f-ing HUGE that they had nowhere else to go. I have all of their albums though..."Number or Your Name" is almost as good
A few years ago I caught this full concert on UA-cam and heard songs from their second album that I realized were the bomb! AND I STILL OWN THAT ALBUM! I just never listened to it. That was the problem. Also, if you watch the documentary about them, they were terribly mismanaged and suffered from major changes with their label. Not to mention the aforementioned steady abuse from critics who thought what we needed was more 70's soft rock.
First....The Knack was a far better band than anyone ever gave them credit for. The reality was that My Sharona was a crappy song. Coming on the radio in the 70s when we were still listening heavily to Zeppelin, Sabbath, Queen and other bands of their caliber. Sharona was a mistake and that was all the radio played. They never got a fair chance to show what they could really do, which is what this vid shows. Incredible.

I loved them and really didn't care that the rock snobs then called them (and a lot of other bands)" Beatles rip off's". I just saw this video for the first timeand thought The Knack did a hell of a job covering Hard Day's Night.
Thanks for posting, I saw them at Detroit's Masonic Temple in October of 1979, about a week before this Carnegie Hall Show. When they played this it was pure bedlam, the house lights were on and everyone was singing along! It was an unbelievable time that I won't forget! RIP Doug, and thanks for the music.
One of the greatest high energy rock bands of all time. They earned that comparison to The Beatles when the hit the scene in the late seventies. Doug was gone way too early. Few bands will ever come close to the raw energy of The Knack.

They had one song called “Maybe Tonight” that could have been a .Beatles song, and their first album cover looked like a Beatles album cover, if I remember correctly. From watching some UA-cam videos, they did cover some Beatles songs, but I have no idea how many. Would have to look it up. Their first album was really good, in my opinion, but that’s going back to 1979, which was a long time ago. I waited years to buy their other albums, but each of them never were never as good as their first album. I think it was close to their last album that they released another song that I liked. “Mr. Handleman” was pretty good too. I see a lot of comments here that compare them to the Beatles. I haven’t seen enough of their videos to know much about them, but maybe there was something about their live performances that reminded them of the Beatles? I do remember the lead singer died very young at about the age of 56? Their drummer must have died very young too? Do you know if they ever reformed the band with new members?
I love The Knack! They always reminded me of like an awesome mashup of The Beatles great pop melodies and The Who's crazy energy and tight musical rhythms.

It's a rare group that doesn't make me want to grind my teeth when they do a Beatles cover. And I loved dancing to "My Sharona" in high school. A shame they don't have a left-handed bass player; that would have been really cute.
Wow! A cover of a Beatles song is a major endeavor, and most attempting it fail miserably, but this band made it right, just like the Fab Four recorded amazing covers of their African American idols, great!
I saw them live once at their peak, it was rip roaring rock and roll right from the get go... I've seen hundreds of shows thru the years, but I have never seen an audience respond to a band the way they did that night. I recall their charisma, it was like a liquid energy being dispensed into the audience and everyone just went wild. Oh, and they finished the show with "I want to hold your hand".
Loved the band and the music; in the end, the consumers (or fans) know best; in 1979-80 these guys were the bomb! Glad I was there when they came out big on the scene. Screw the media. Just enjoy the music.

Jeanette Miller Frustated is one of my favorite songs from them. That first album was brilliant! And my Sharona although their big hit is not a song I care for. To me it was too strange with that weird rhythm. But good girls don’t and frustrated are two of their best! 🔥💥🎸😎.
ABSOLUTELY! Bruce Gary was one of the greatest rock n' roll drummers of ALL TIME. It's a shame that he and Doug Fieger didn't always get along, but they ALWAYS respected each others talent. RIP BRUCE AND DOUG.
I remember when the Knack came out and the "B" word (Beatles) was thrown around a bit in describing them. They are one of the few bands who could pull off a cover like this with a Beatles kind of energy.

GT182/66GTO Simple to explain: grab an original vinyl (1979 pressing) and you'll hear the lp lyrics,which are semi-naughty for the era...then get a 1999 cd issue,and you'll hear the "sanitized"-for-radio versions of not only "Good Girls Don't",but what was to have been the third single,"(She's So) Selfish",and the sanitized parts are more obvious. How? Capitol goofed and used single release masters from the Canadian arm of Capitol. All newer remasters have the American album masters.
Always fun to hear a guitarist duplicate George Martin's sped-up electric piano solo from The Beatles' original recording. Like The Beatles, The Knack was one of rock 'n' roll's best cover bands ever. Very underrated.

You're right, imitating The Beatles apparently just wasn't in vogue with critics then, but Oasis were praised for it. Back then, critics wrote as if The Knack were objectively, factually BAD. I grew up reading all those Creem/Rolling Stone/Trouser Press/etc. mags, and you'd think The Knack were CRIMINALS, by God, to read what the press said about them. They were just a rock band, like 'em or not. I've grown to really despise rock critics and the criticism media in general.

Jeanette Miller Frustated is one of my favorite songs from them. That first album was brilliant! And my Sharona although their big hit is not a song I care for. To me it was too strange with that weird rhythm. But good girls don’t and frustrated are two of their best! 🔥💥🎸😎.

ABSOLUTELY! Bruce Gary was one of the greatest rock n' roll drummers of ALL TIME. It's a shame that he and Doug Fieger didn't always get along, but they ALWAYS respected each others talent. RIP BRUCE AND DOUG.
I remember when the Knack came out and the "B" word (Beatles) was thrown around a bit in describing them. They are one of the few bands who could pull off a cover like this with a Beatles kind of energy.

There's a great reference book "The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions" by EMI that describes George Martin adding his electric piano solo to this song on April 16, 1964. And you're right about Martin speeding up his piano solo on "In My Life" to make it sound like a harpsichord.

GT182/66GTO Simple to explain: grab an original vinyl (1979 pressing) and you'll hear the lp lyrics,which are semi-naughty for the era...then get a 1999 cd issue,and you'll hear the "sanitized"-for-radio versions of not only "Good Girls Don't",but what was to have been the third single,"(She's So) Selfish",and the sanitized parts are more obvious. How? Capitol goofed and used single release masters from the Canadian arm of Capitol. All newer remasters have the American album masters.

Always fun to hear a guitarist duplicate George Martin's sped-up electric piano solo from The Beatles' original recording. Like The Beatles, The Knack was one of rock 'n' roll's best cover bands ever. Very underrated.

This band was so tight. Great solo guitarist. They had a great sound. All talented. Loved them. I like any band that dresses like Beatles. Why not? It’s called uniformity

You're right, imitating The Beatles apparently just wasn't in vogue with critics then, but Oasis were praised for it. Back then, critics wrote as if The Knack were objectively, factually BAD. I grew up reading all those Creem/Rolling Stone/Trouser Press/etc. mags, and you'd think The Knack were CRIMINALS, by God, to read what the press said about them. They were just a rock band, like 'em or not. I've grown to really despise rock critics and the criticism media in general.

Yeah, the Internet has exposed journalists to mainstream opinion like nothing else ever did. No more ivory tower for them, and no more becoming a quasi-celebrity like Lester Bangs because rock stars like Lou Reed were willing to hang out with him. Used to be, Lisa Robinson and her gang could torpedo a band's career on a whim. It doesn't matter as much if ten prominent critics trash a band, because the 50,000 people who love that band have a way to express it now, and more loudly!

Totally perfect timing...new wave rock or power pop these guys were slick...not tribute band these dudes singlehandedly brought pop rock out of the disco pomp drug doldrums IMO...not much credit given til now...lots of women in that crowd!
