This is going back 35 years, I was a mechanic, and we had cable blade, pony start dozer. We also had a old dozer that had the clutch/brake to turn. I remember changing out the driveshaft brake for the clutch several times. So long ago, I cannot remember the CAT model numbers. Was not long after that we transitioned to Hydrostatic transmissions. A number of years ago I ran a 2U that had serial number 15501. It was bought from James City County in Virginia. It was originally a US Army COE machine. It had been adapted with a 24V starting system and the PONY removed by the CAT dealer, also had bolt on track segments. We removed the double drum winch to lighten it up a bit. To my knowledge it's still alive and walking in the Upstate area of South Carolina.
+Bostonpowercat If memory serves, it was a 1951 model. It had the bolt on segment ring welded on by the CAT dealer. The electric starter motor made starting a breeze even in cold weather. I especially liked running it in winter. After a few minutes of running, you were plenty warm. In the summer, it was HELL with a set of tracks. The cooling fan wasn't reversible, made you want to ride naked because it was so hot. I always wanted to try one out with the pull scraper. I bet that was quite an orchestra to conduct. :)

Year's ago I worked for a Hard rock contractor that had an old Cat D9H Built in 1958. that had a gasoline pony motor like this one. Year's later while working for a pipeline outfit which used D9 based Pipeliners. We were in a very remote section of mountains in southern Arizona when we had one lose it's starter. They were so old that Empire Machine(Cat dealership) had no rebuilt units nor did anyone else, so I pulled it out shipping it to our shop in Farmington NM via Greyhound (It weighed 98 pounds) a few days later a second D9 lost its starter. So for the next 2 weeks I had to start 1 D9, pull it's starter, then travel to the next D9 install the starter, fire it off, pull it, travel to the next D9 and repeat.
@Richard C,that’s a great story thanks for sharing that.Yes when those pony motors are running great no problems but they can become a pain very quickly!.In the process of restoring an old D8 2u pipelayer at the moment she will need main engine work and pony ,been sat for 30 years.Cheers.👍
I had a holiday job on my uncles farm doing some drainage. All we needed to do was fill in a ditch, but the battery on his little D4 was flat. we tried towing it with his ute - no go. We then drove back to get his Little leyland tractor, battery flat! We tow started that with his ute, across we go again, this tractor wouldn't do it either grass to wet and tractor to light. Back again to the shed with the leyland to get the big nuffield, you guessed it battery flat again! towed the Nuffield with the Leyland. Then back and towed the D4 with the Nuffield!. Total time taken 2 hours, time to fill the ditch 10 minutes Oh and before we started that morning we had to crash start the ute! because it had a stuffed battery too!

Oh yeah ove the sound of the wee primary injector pump when he first starts out....you wonder 'gee these Cats sound tinny or something - too much treble....and then she cranks up for real and the BASS booster cranks up! Ah yes and what about that whistling turbo crankin' - ain't nothin like it on this here earth. These old beast are great until you have to work on them, I had to break the track and replace a few of the rollers on the under carrage and fix the tensioner, also had to pull the clutch for repairs, all I have to say is to pull your bootstraps up tight for these, especially if you wring off the 7/8 bolts on the rollers, drilling and tapping upside down is a chore.
Cool, I use a key to start the dozer I run, ac works awesome also. Enjoyed the video, neat to see how it was done back in the day or a third world country.
I run an engine machine shop in Regina Sask. Canada. Last week we had a pair of heads in to check over for a customer with a D8H machine. This week we have another customer in to us with his crankshaft and connecting rods for a model D8-2U. The crankshaft had to be pulled due to a failed connecting rod bearing. If I have a chance I may be able to take some video of the crankshaft journals being reground on our crankshaft grinder if anyone is interested in seeing this. I will also be trying to access some parts for this customer. I would be interested in any leads you can share with me on gasket sets, ring sets, rod bearings and pin bushings.
Hi, great to hear from you. Our email address is bostonpowercat@gmail.com if you want to send us an email and we can send you some information regarding parts. Also have a look at our website www.bostonpowercat.com, in the pictures section there are pictures of a D8-8R rebuild we did. Cheers
Thanks very much, glad you enjoyed the video 👍 Your right the donkey engine on the D8 being towed is not currently working, it's a project for the winter, but we wanted to give the main engine a run as it hadn't been started for so long.
+gary scott Thanks very much, glad you enjoyed. Have a look at some of our other videos if you like old stuff, we just put a new one up last week of our double D9 bulldozer!!
Hi, are you specifically talking about starting in reverse? If so any Diesel engine that has a manual gearbox will start in reverse as long as the engine is turning over when you pull the clutch in it should start weather your going in forward or reverse. If the engine has an automatic box then you can't jump start it at all. Hope this answers your question?
Bostonpowercat Hi. I mean it looked like the dozer being pulled somehow got "jump started" because of the other dozer pulling it. Kind of like how you can take a manual truck and let it coast down a hill, pop the clutch, and have it start. I just wondered if that was the same thing that was happening to the dozer being pulled.
Yep you've got it, exactly the same as if you were to coast a truck down a hill and pop it into gear to get it started, just in this case we used the other dozer to pull it along to get the momentum going!!
Some diesel engines can be started in the wrong direction, if the gear is set in reverse, and the vehicle is pulled forward. Not good. There is no oil pressure, and the dirty exhaust exits through to air filter. Better stop it immediately!
Yes all the old diesel Cats up until the late 1960's early 70's were "pony" start. Have a look at our other videos all our Cats are pony start apart from the 666 motor scraper. Hope this helps. Cheers 👍👍
Yes it is turbo charged, the old stuff was built to last that's why it's still going great all these years later! There's a lot even older stuff out there still running like new day 👍
The sound of the turbos is awesome. It sounds like inside an engine room of the old oil supply boats from the 70`s and 80`s...Thanks bostonpowercat.

Bostonpowercat I don't believe ive heard of a22a d8In 1963 I believe it would be a35a ,36a or powershift 46a.unless this is in the UK or somewhere.
Hi Lee, thanks for the comment and yes you are right, but this is a UK machine, it was built in Glasgow and different serial numbers were used in the UK as opposed to the States even though they are exactly the same machine. Cheers

Old Diesels Never Die !!!
Yeah that's for sure, as long as you look after them with oil and filter changes they will outlast us both!!
Benno Van Woudenberg
man that turbo sounds badass
Would love to enjoy the experience of pony starting one of these old girls and bump starting one
@andy mac ,there is always a spare seat !lol, for helpers .Cheers
Great machines of their time !
Yes they certainly were, they helped shape the modern world !
Tractor just like beloved and longing father, miss them both, D8 and my father. Trator igual ao do meu querido e saudoso pai, tenho saudades dos dois, do D 8 e de meu pai. maneco ou maneka, Porto Alegre-RS -Brasil.
Formerly fro Ma now in Mo. A nice selection of idle old beasts out here.
those 8s sound awsome
Thanks very much 👍 👍
These machines are so cool
Thanks very much 👍👍
Steering clutches and brakes would make a man out of a boy. We had an early 50's IH TD-18. It started on gas, then switched to diesel when warm enough... NO pony motor!
q
TD-18 etc. is a way better system. I can't stand the sound of Cat pony motors and they weren't reliable as well....
D8s-D10s were everywhere over here in New Zealand when hydro dam excavation work began in the middle of the South Island back in 1965 when a massive earth dam was completed on the Waitaki River at the Benmore station. A system of dams and power stations was built on Lakes Pūkaki and Tekapo. Lake Pūkaki was raised 37 metres by a dam. If you are interested here's an excellent link to pics of earth moving machinery working on the Benmore hydro dam that began in 1958 here in the South Island of New Zealand: www.flickr.com/photos/nzcat/albums/72157631972586660
Thank you for posting the link for those photographs. Very interesting to look at!
Awesome video guys!
Cheers!! Glad to see you made it over from Instagram 😀👍👍
+ps,you are certainly rite their ,it’s all heavy work and only gets heavier on the 9s😂
Yep I grew up on 36a
Love hearing that engine spool up like that 😉👍👍
@Jim Britt ,yes you can’t beat the sound of those old D8hs real work horses ,and can still do a shift today!.Cheers.👍
Hmm direct drive. I ran a 941 some years ago but it was all hydraulic. I was and probably still am the only one who could start it.
Was the 941 pony start?
Starter motor 24 volt system
Ahh ok, it's normally the pony starts which are a pain in the ass when they want to be!!
This one was poorly maintained and needed a lot of work so she was a finicky bitch
James, amazing! Shelia ♡
Wow, what a beast!!! Something outta Mad Max....
The 2U looks like it has a pretty nice tracks on it. Well at least the grozers(probably spelled that wrong) look good.
Cool, I use a key to start the dozer I run, ac works awesome also. Enjoyed the video, neat to see how it was done back in the day or a third world country.
Great to hear that story and it's always nice to compare how things have changed, but also appreciate where they originated from. Cheers 👍
What are you calling a third world country?
Cheers
howdy ,im enjoying your videos keep it up .gary
Glad your enjoying them 👍 will have another on the way before too long hopefully :-)
Sweet sounding diesels
Cheers 👍 Be sure to check out our channel for other "big" diesels !
A cracking video from start to finish. I'm guessing the donkey isn't working on the one cat?
Thanks very much, glad you enjoyed the video 👍
Your right the donkey engine on the D8 being towed is not currently working, it's a project for the winter, but we wanted to give the main engine a run as it hadn't been started for so long.
Beautiful machines.
thanks ,i really enjoyed that video
+gary scott Thanks very much, glad you enjoyed. Have a look at some of our other videos if you like old stuff, we just put a new one up last week of our double D9 bulldozer!!
howdy ,i really enjoyed watching that video
Thanks for you kind comment, much appreciated. Glad you enjoyed :-)
too bad that i wasnt there i would like to operate one
Yes it was a fun day tinkering with the old machines, just a shame your not in the UK :-(
Hi there buddy! I'm your local Cat PSSR rep! I just happen to have a credit app in the car with me.
Not sure what this means?!!!
Бостон супер бульдозер !!!
Love it! wish I was there to help!
We could have done with a helper, trying to film and drive isn't the easiest!! Glad you enjoyed, cheers :-)
START YOU SOB!! NICE JOB sounds beautiful I used to work on V24 marine CATS big an bad! Time to get the blade on an do some DOZIN!! C'MON!!!
Looking to get the blade back on soon, needs a bit of tlc first though!!
3:16 - love that instrument panel! I wonder what that sign on the left says: "Be Careful..."
No radio or sat nav on that one!! Will see what the sticker says and let you know when we take the protective sheet off in the next day or so.
@@Bostonpowercat 5 years later... what does it say?
If they lost a track in muddy country they needed some tough guys to set it back , no clean factory job !
Pig of a job if you have a track come off that's for sure!
Nice machine! I bet it never ever got stuck.
Thanks 👍 they are pretty good in most conditions, but if it's too boggy they can get stuck, then it's a pain to try and get them free!!
Love the old school Dozers.
My grandpa taught me to push scrapers on a 2u
Oh love that whistling turbine.
Sounds happy once going!
That turbo sounds deadly
It certainly does have a whistle!!
I noticed you throttled up the 22A but why didnt you throttle up the 2U? Nice to see some old dogs still alive.
Thanks 👍
Didn't Rev the 2U too much as it had been stood for nearly 2 years so it was just a quiet amble out to get her warm and some oil around it.
Cruisin' on a D8 dozer, coool!!!
How does pulling a dozer in reverse "jump start" it? Does it work with all dozers or only a certain engine type?
Hi, are you specifically talking about starting in reverse? If so any Diesel engine that has a manual gearbox will start in reverse as long as the engine is turning over when you pull the clutch in it should start weather your going in forward or reverse. If the engine has an automatic box then you can't jump start it at all. Hope this answers your question?
Bostonpowercat
Hi.
I want one. Maybe two!!
You definitely need two, how you going to toe start one if the other one won't start?!!! :-)
I didn't know these old CATs had a piggyback gas engine (unless I am wrong) like the old John Deere diesels did.
Yes all the old diesel Cats up until the late 1960's early 70's were "pony" start. Have a look at our other videos all our Cats are pony start apart from the 666 motor scraper. Hope this helps.
Cheers 👍👍
This is how true machine looks like. It sounds like the engine is turbocharged. How is turbo still woking after 60 years?
Yes it is turbo charged, the old stuff was built to last that's why it's still going great all these years later! There's a lot even older stuff out there still running like new day 👍
Bostonpowercat Great stuff!
Great video.
Thanks very much 👍👍
schwags1969 .
Georgous machines.
Nice machines
+roger thornburg Cheers, have a look at our other videos for similar stuff 👍
Je connais tous les modèles de ces machines de 1935 à 1980...... et jusqu'au dernier boulon!!!...
Nice One Bro!
Cheers, it's something a little different :-)
Is that a turbo whistle sound the first tractor is making when it starts?
cowboydodge98 Yes your spot on, that's the turbo whistling when the first one starts :-)
Hay! Thats real Cool! I would love to have a go at driveing that! But! Im in the uk, nice vid man
Thanks for the great comment 👍👍
you don't drive these ??? you operate them ??
I want one do they come in larger sizes?
Awesome turbocharger sound
Cheers, we have just put another video up of this machine 👍👍
strong tractor. cool
