My friend and i developed a drinking game where you sit on the park overlooking the house on the island, any time you hear someone mention the house and island you take a drink, it gets dangerous very quickly in the summer
Brown Willy, the highest point in Cornwall, is visible from Bodmin Beacon. For the jokers on here, it is not an English language name. It is anglicised Bron Winneli, meaning the hill of the swallows. I know it as Bron Winneli. From Bodmin.
Well done on visiting Jamaica Inn without mentioning the Daphne DuMaurier novel that made it the hellhole tourist trap it is now 🤣 Good work on the clay mountains of Bugle, or Bew gulais, as the locals would like it to be called 😉
The 'your mum' joke was so savage, and completely unexpected, I haven't laughed so hard in ages, I love it! Thank you so much for making these vids, you are a national treasure.
Living and working here in Cornwall is a privilege. BTW, my mate and I concluded over 20yrs ago that the obelisk at Bodmin is really the tip of a giant Mothership.
Many of the old slag heaps from the old Tin, Copper and Lead mines have suddenly become very valuable as Lithium has been found amongst them, now being recovered from some that are accessible by road, an unknown mineral until the 20th century. Plans being drawn up to reopen some old mines that can be. Lesson is waste is not always waste.
I went to the Jamaica Inn on holiday once. Nice pub and enjoyed the museum. But when we say down at our table a guy sold a massive pack of illegally imported cigarettes to his mate for £20 on the table opposite. So, the inn is still living up to it's reputation. 😄
Returning eastward from Cornwall in the late 70's we went over a brow on the A30 to find a Land Rover towing a caravan had broken down just before the crest in the westbound lane. Nothing could get past it because the road was busy and they couldn't see oncoming traffic for the crest. The tailback was 14 miles !
I had my most frightening journey on the A30 from Bodmin back to Devon. The temperature dropped from 9 degrees to 1. The road became a sheet of ice. My 4 wheel drive car snaked down the road for about a mile. My hands gripping the wheel and my bottom gripping the seat. In total, I passed 16 cars that had crashed, some in the central crash barrier, some down the bank at the roadside and some into each other or a lorry. I've driven professionally and personally for 40 years and I have never experienced anything like it before or after.
That's happened to me twice the worst coming back from Egremont in cumbria, it went from a solid 8degrees to minus 2 within a couple of miles after going past bootle then started snowing (not forcast either). Honestly if I wasn't driving our subaru forester me and the kids would have been stuck up there with everyone else! Ended up pulling a family in a land rover out as they'd tried to go around a crashed car & gotten stuck! Not seen anything like that before, by the time we got down to the duel carriage way that goes from Barrow to the m6 it was 9 degrees again.
The Jamaica Inn was once owned by novelist Alistair MacLean, of Where Eagles Dare and Guns of Navarone fame. This audience strikes me as the type who would find that interesting. Regards from a fellow Saab driver.
Another great video. I remember sat in the back of an Austin A30 on the single lane A30 about 50 years ago. Took days to get there from London before the M5.
Newquay Spaceport was the home for Bloodhound SSC when it did its runway test. Also, the EJ200 jet engine for it was tested there in a HAS ( hardened air shelter) so is very NOT a waste of time. My name is Jon (no ,really!) thank you for reading!
Newquay airport/the runway is not a waste of time but the Spaceport absolutely is. Great video Jon and well researched. I was on the Tregargus Trail today as I live in the neighbouring village.
Holidayed near Launcestershireton in August and thoroughly enjoyed it. Very gorgeous. Really loved the mining history all around. Best bit was if the weather was crap on the south coast then it was fine on the north. Many pasties were harmed in the making of that holiday.
How to make a vast, empty space sound interesting? Just send Jon, in his trusty SAAB, with his 1923 Michelin guide book, period correct maps, and whatever he seems to find, like a quarry
Aha! Jon randomly migrates to Cornwall this week. Too much to see for one episode though. Missed out the obvious double entendres around Brown Willy and Fat Willy's Surf Shack. Also missed the famous "Nearly There" trees at Cookworthy Knapp, overlooking the A30 near the Cornwall border. It's true, there's not a huge amount to do in Newquay...apart from surfing, exploring the many beaches and small coves, hiking the coastpath, sea fishing (still a major industry for the region), sailing, delving into the area's rich history...and relaxing in a local pub. Errr, yes, I live in Newquay.😁 Lovely drone footage Jon, especially of the clay works.
I’m thinking , wow the Cornish are a bit strange, but then , we say hello to the Fairies crossing a bridge in the isle of man 🇮🇲…so I’m back in the room….cheers Jon..👍😍🇮🇲
Great video as always. I grew up in Clay Country as it’s known as so the Cornish Alps were a familiar sight. Now I live away it’s great to see my homeland as I don’t get to visit too often, thank you.
Oh blimey look its a flying car at 3:04!!! Check out the white car in the middle casting its "shadow" on the road underneath it!!!! (Its actually a black car following behind but i HAD to rewind to check it!!!)
😂😂👌 "Remains of the Works abuikdings Quarry And Some Large Slag heaps AKA your Mum that almost look like Snow Covered Mountains " 😂😂 Once again a Wicked Sweet Awesome Videos Hahah have great weekend 🙏
Used to live near an old section of the Old A30 many years ago. Myself and a buddy of mine managed to squeeze my Citroen AX on to the portion that sits between Blackacre and the Old A30 East Car Park (Wasn't always called that!) near Fraddon/Indian Queens... Managed to drive down it from Blackacre to the car park.. then set off a firework or two... It was quite loud and fun! Ah! Childhood memories! There are so many amazing places to go in Cornwall that are off the beaten track.
Love the slag heap 'your mum' quip! 😂❤
Never gets old :)
@@ianhart4990*ur mum*
@@andymerrettUnlike your mum 😅
The other week I saw a "think bike, think your mum" sticker which instantly made me disappointed I'd not thought of it before.
😅 snap 😂
Sunday isn't Sunday anymore without another Great British Road Journeys episode.
It's the modern version of Bullseye and the top 40
So true!
It’s about as British as a Sunday roast 😉
Absobloodylutely
A Korn reference and a 'Your Mum' joke! You are spoiling us Jon.
Great video as always in an area i know well.
Ahhh... thanks. Didn't recognise them.
Jon is defo a metal head
My friend and i developed a drinking game where you sit on the park overlooking the house on the island, any time you hear someone mention the house and island you take a drink, it gets dangerous very quickly in the summer
You omitted Cornwall's highest point - Brown Willy.
Is the second highest White Willy?
@@JohnSmithShieldsPart of the Labour Party quota system. For every 5 white Willys you need 1 brown willy.
No need to call him that just because he omitted Cornwall's highest point :D
and omitted to mention the china clay works were home to 1970's British sci-fi - Dr Who, Blakes 7 etc

You were in Lanson John? If I'd known I would've made you a cuppa. I have a kettle specifically for that..
Well done on visiting Jamaica Inn without mentioning the Daphne DuMaurier novel that made it the hellhole tourist trap it is now 🤣 Good work on the clay mountains of Bugle, or Bew gulais, as the locals would like it to be called 😉

For so long I have awaited an Auto Shenanigans episode in Cornwall! You haven’t disappointed - except it’s pronounced Lanson
Having grown up in Cornwall, I think I can say you did a “Proper Job” with your description
Indeed - no gushing praise for the place. 👍
Let's take a moment to appreciate how good Jon's photography is, especially the drone shots. Great work sir!
1:10 one thing that does happen in Launceston is the Launceston Steam Railway, a 2ft Gauge steam railway using mostly former Dinorwic Quarry locos
Living and working here in Cornwall is a privilege.
BTW, my mate and I concluded over 20yrs ago that the obelisk at Bodmin is really the tip of a giant Mothership.
I didn't think you could top the Secrets of the Motorway series but this is unbelievably good. I doff my cap to you sir, amazing work. Thank you Jon
LOL An autoshenanigans video is one the last of places I would expect a random frame of Korn to pop up but here we are.

..."a.k.a your mum" - I spat my tea out and woke up the baby laughing at that. I don't even care. Also involuntarily cheered the KoRn reference.
Same 😂

It's a crap hole 🤣
Quietly equating Newquay with a clay mine. Lovely. Top sarcasm award for this one!

I visited an old tin mine when I was last in Cornwall.
Despite being disused for over a hundred years, it was still full of old tins.
Auto Shenanigans is always on my `first view' list its cheerful, relaxing, & informative with a great deal of effort packed into 10 minutes
The 1939 Alfred Hitchcock film "Jamaica Inn" was filmed at Jamaica Inn and around Cornwall.

The Jamaica Inn was once owned by novelist Alistair MacLean, of Where Eagles Dare and Guns of Navarone fame. This audience strikes me as the type who would find that interesting. Regards from a fellow Saab driver.

That Island House reminds me of Agent X20's house in Gerry Andersnon's Stingray
A beautiful piece of country, I like how you edited out the sound of banjos being played.

Fun fact: i was at a stag do in February 2004 in walkabout in Newquay lol Fri night 1 a pint! A tenner went a long way 20 years ago! 😂
Always good, thank you.
Every weekend I'm reminded of another thing I enjoy about this channel. Today's it's Jon's accurate use of the subjunctive.
Nice one, I live in the "Alps" and I can see the Airport and Space port building, many moons ago I worked in the Gnome bay at RAF St Mawgan.
2:00 Oh, look...Jon's going Bodmin.
I look forward to your videos every Sunday morning. Thank you so very much.
Ooooh so close!
a korn reference is the last thing i expected to see on this channel lmao
That island house is really cool another great video John hope you have a great week ⚓️🧲👍😁
There was a more recent BBC version which I gather was slated due the actors mumbling their words throughout the series...
Cornwall is beautiful, been there many times to see family there. :)

Correct about Korn. The trees just behind you at the park used to have ‘Korn’ graffitied on them 😂
ayyyy Cornwall gang!!!
Today I learned that the Walkabout pub chain is still going.
I laughed when you called Cornwall a “vast wasteland”…but then later we got to that quarry. Maybe you were right. 🤣🤣
